It finally passed the MOT (2nd attempt) on 10th May and I was able to drive her to work on a sunny morning of my birthday a few days later - it was THE best present ever given I bought the car in January 2010! This is him a week or so later after getting a few hundred miles on the (non-existent) clock: Here she is somewhere in the Ammergauer Alpen - she made it with just fuel and oil!

THere were alot of late nights toward the MOT, which I was trying to get done as much in advance of the trip as possible as I knew there'd be gremlins. Here it is one one of those late nights: Not a particularly great vid but this was the first time I drove the car - I was sooooo nervous! drive.google.com/file/d/0B42Q4_7LVIndUDJwMDI3TzJMb0k/view?usp=drivesdk

Rear end is from an E30 325i and has been narrowed to suit 02 mounting points. The diff is a silly low 4.45:1 LSD - the thinking being that acceleration is the main thing with this car as opposed to top speed: Got very lucky with the prop (from a 316/318) in that with it slid to its longest setting on the splines it fitted perfectly between the box and the diff. The output flange on the box was the only headache as it didn't mate with the much later) prop, but another visit to Chris saw that sorted: Dash starting to fill up with the basic instruments: Cabin then started coming together fairly quickly (not that there's much to put in it!)

Got her fired up for the first time back in October last year. Engine is an M10 that's been stroked with a crank from an S14 (E30 M3) and some larger, forged pistons. Cylinder head is well worked over, guess you could call it ~stage 2-ish, but the cam (for now) is a standard one from a 2-litre M10 tii spec: s35.photobucket.com/user/knobstar/media/Crompton%20Touring/20151027_122153_zpsnqb2ghtq.mp4.htmlWith the engine in and running attentions turned to getting that power rearwards. When the car used to race it had a BTCC -spec S14 engine with a 6-speed sequential box; and it was that that caused some serious hacking of the tunnel I believe: Fortunately for me there is a really talented fabricator called Chris who rents a unit on the same park as mine. He had something knocked up to cover that massive hole in no time: He did such a great job I asked him if he could make the instrument panel, too. I made a few templates for the electrickery I'd already bought and let him dream up the rest. I love it

It's a massive 18 months since my last update(!) and so I thought I owed you guys and girls something. After all, I get so much pleasure from reading all your threads on your projects :-) Summary is that the car is now road legal for the first time since 1997 and is just back from a 2300 -mile 'shakedown run' to the Ammergauer Alpen and back to commemorate 100yrs BMW and 50yrs since the '02 series began production. Following getting the car back the next point of focus was getting the engine in and running. I've had plenty of help from my friend and codriver for the aforementioned trip, Lee, and it was at his house that we got it fired up for the first time. It was made slightly easier by the kit car -style modular wiring loom I bought from SVC in staffs, as I knew everything was good and I had instructions Before engine the fully-reconditioned subframe (bushes, joints, bolts and nuts) went in - Lee is the one doing the work : Getting the engine in with so little of the front of the car wasn't too hard(!)

Hi Mark, I do have a thread on here but sm awful at keeping it updated! The one on 02forum is the one i update most often: 02forum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=354&start=210Engine is an m10 bored and stroked to 2.3 with s14 crank and forged pistons. Very mild cam at present but should do 200bhp with a wilder one.

I owe you a belated thanks for the (implicit) recommendation of Pristine, Mark, as I ended up giving my '02 Touring to Mick and the guys last May. This was as a result of seeing what they'd done with MIB and the praise you'd given them. I got it back in December and they've done a stunning job as you'd expect. Before: After: Yours is looking ever more fabulous and I bet you can't wait to drive it!

Moving the Beemer from Turkey shed to a new, posh unit. Smaller space but it has toilets and heating so better for those long, cold nights

Good points, BC. The bodyshop has offered me the option of vinyl so perhaps white with something similar to the graphics is had down the side in the late 90s would be decent; updated a bit if possible.

I've been tempted by lairy colours but apparently fibreglass is terrible for concealing imperfections... On the safer side I quite like 'hellblau' as a colour, like this one:

Evening, all! Thought you may like to see some progress by the clever blokes in Essex doing the bodywork - I've been excited like a child since I dropped it off mid-May and the first photos landed last night. Apparently the (one piece) front was a pig to get lined up and fastening in place; as you can probably see i've asked for quick-release fasteners such that I don't lose any of the accessibility once the engine's in there. They're moving on apace and so I'm being asked things like finishing colours. At that point I thought who better to ask than fellow retro-riders - what do y'all think?

Loooong overdue an update it would appear! I haven't done a huge amount (myself) but a few key decisions and purchases have definitely injected some much-needed pace into a project that's now in it's 5th year.. I decided to give the bodywork to someone who knows what they're doing and as such got her booked her in to Pristine Bodyworks to get the bodywork sorted and prepped for paint. I started getting her ready to roll early in May and was amazed I hadn't misplaced any bits given the amount of time that's elapsed! It was really good to see her back on wheels for the first time in over 3 years I think: I was really lucky with the weather on the day in May I took her darn sarf; arriving in Rochford around 3pm: Having met Mick I have absolutley no doubts that it was worth the trek (~400 miles round) to take the car there - he absolutely loves the car and you can tell he's excited about it Such a genuine bloke with a real passion for old beemers no doubt. While she's been away I've had time to pondor the remainder of the tasks following the bodywork, which have lead to a change in decision on the engine. Quite a few people – including Mick – have said to me that it may be better with a BMW engine in terms of originality; and I came to the conclusion that they're right. With around a ~180hp M10 this car should be plenty fast enough to begin with and it will probably be worth more, too. Just as these thoughts had crystalised I came across this beaut on the bay: Spec: M10 engine Stroked to 2.3 literes with crank from S14 Forged oversized pistons Stage 3 head Kugelfischer injection It was a fair amount of wonga but I figured I could never build an engine of this spec for the price I paid, and as such it was worth the investment. It made the long trip from Ireland and arrived safely the other week; now poised for its new home. Tasks remaining look something like this: - Paint and overhaul front subframe and suspension
- Get some front brakes!
- Ascertain condition of the getrag 260 I bought a year ago(!)
- Retrieve escort rack conversion from previous owner
- Replace steering column
- Plumb in braking system
- Make interior habitable
- Wiring
