After an unusual cock-up by BMW Classic Parts I finally received the last gasket I needed to put the M42 sump onto the M44. All went together without a snag: I have been pondering gearbox / final drive options having only recently discovered that the Getrag 220 has a 1:1 5th gear - great for the track put pants for long trips with the current 4.4:1 final drive e.g. Provence. Here it is next to the 240: Regardless of which tranny/final drive combo I chose I'm definitely getting rid of the massive dual-mass flywheel, which is one of the next things on the list of jobs. According to those who've weighed one it's around 11 or 12 kilos. Quite tempted by this little number from Australia as it's the lightest thing I can find on the interwebs and leaves me free to chose from getrag 220,240 or 260. It seems a better option than a (heavier) aluminium flywheel with a steel inlay: racehead.com.au/products-page/engine-components/bmw-light-flywheel-m50-m52-m42-m44/Happy New Year to you all when it comes:D

I've always found that my manspace was a great escape from life's challenges, tho am sorry to hear of yours, James. As always, tho, you continue to amaze with how much you manage to get done in so little time; so well done for that! Keep the faith and try to imagine that first drive ;-)

As the M10's swansong I took it to a dyno a few weeks back - completely forgot I hadn't posted the results. All the figures are at the wheels and the measured losses averaged 18bhp during a coastdown. The two plots are 'as it drove in' and 'as i drove home' with the majority of the increase attributed to the pipercross 'socks' i had on there. The kugelfischer pump is standard so running out of fuel at the top end, plus the cam is standard, too. Yes, it does feel a bit like a diesel(!) With those two things sorted it looks like it would pull hard to 6500 and probably be putting out not far off 200bhp, hence that is my aim for the M44 + charger combo

Seems like option 3 is the clear favourite on both this and the 02forum As a result of selling most of the engine and ancillaries I have removed it from the car so it can be shipped. The exhaust manifold has gone to Australia and the engine & throttle bodies are going to the south of France(!) The one-piece front clip really comes into its own when there are jobs like this to do, plus the fact that the engine and box can be dropped whilst still attached to the subframe after undoing fewer than 10 bolts: With the odds and sods pulled off it this is the size of the package that's going across the channel to its new home: With the new-found readies in my bank I wasted no time in going to EBay and picking myself up an Eaton M45 from a Mini Cooper S: Also scored a pair of as-new helmets for me and Mrs Knobstar - figured if she's brave/stupid/kind enough to join me all the way down to Provence in spring then her noggin should be equally protected and conversation will actually be possible without getting hoarse(!) Very lucky that the sizes the chap had were right for us, respectively. Next jobs are getting the M44 engine positioned correctly in the subframe and then moving on to getting engine mounts made. Before removing the M10 from the subframe I spent a while taking measurements using several datums such that I don't end up with a misfit.

HOW DID I MISS THIS!!!!!! Well done buddy, huge progress getting it going, and LOVE that now it is working, you have taken the engine out hahaha The M44 is a great engine, I had a 318is with the M42 and it loved to rev. The only issue seemed to be the extraordinarily heavy flywheel? Keep on the updates Cheers, dude - much appreciate the comments. I know you can relate re the engine swaps lol! It does seem very counter-intuitive to whip out the M10 now the car's running but i've done nigh-on 4000 miles in it like it is so I don't feel too schizo, as it were! Haven't checked in on yours for a while so i will have a peruse this afternoon

I thought I'd give myself some things to do over winter so have done the man-maths on a motor swap to an M44 for the M10 that's currently in it: by breaking apart my engine and selling the goodies I can get to 200hp for no expenditure! To the uninitiated the M10 gets expensive to extract above 150hp as cams are alot of wonga and the Kugelfischer pump is redonk expensive to have tuned. The end goal for the engine swap is to use a GKD supercharger kit but it will run n/a initially with a chip to get around 160hp. This morning's antics: Also over winter I also want to sort the wheel situation as banded steels (the wrong way i.e. loads of positive offset) was never meant to be a permanent solution. As such I'd appreciated your thoughts on the following selection if you have time: Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 NExt update will be following a rolling road session on 17th October so I have a good benchmark on which to improve. I think it's around 140hp, which is pretty lame considering it's a 2.2, limited by the fuelling as the Kugelfischer is completely stock.

Have really enjoyed reading your thread, Nev. I started reading it for the in-depth fitment/testing of the megasquirt and then got hooked on the competitions and the vids :-)
Sorry to hear of the engine woes; am sure you'll get it sorted.

Obviously there's still LOADS to improve upon but to drive your restored classic puts the biuggest smile on your face. You look like a pretty big wally in ear defenders, and sweaty as hell given the poor ventilation, but it just doesn't matter Imminent upgrades include a 300 degree cam and some suspension tweaks for and aft - she's putting out about 140bhp at present but i've seen dyno prints of 170+ with said cam so that's what I'd like. I think she weighs under 800kg but i've yet to get to a friendly weighbridge to verify!
