My first Land Rover. Bought it when I was 15, I was the first civvy owner. Used it for RTV trials and a few years later had it on the road. I painted it, changed the roof, put all the curse word on it a young lad wants including the triple wipers just coz. I was given a 2.5 Turbo D engine from a 110 that got a 200, so put that in here. But before that, I would spend ages going around quarries in my Jeep. Father would be off setting out a trial for the next day, I would be on a little adventure in this. The woodwork was built by my granddad, and the metalwork was done by my Dad. I also eventually had a large flat trailer built for this to tow, that I could carry my motorised digger on. Me when I was around 7. I would also be lap driving a V8 series 1 around the sections to try them before the trial around this time. By the time I was 9 I started trialing motorbikes, and at 13 got into pre 65 trials with a BSA Bantam. I had a couple of 109 Station wagons when I was 16-17, cant find any photos though. Then I got this canvas top 109, 2.25D on a military chassis. I was not much into taking photos, no camera phone and no sense of nostalgia at that age so unfortunately, no photos of some of them. But few more soon.

I keep lots of files packed with details on rally cars from works cars of old, select modern builds and historic work, inc build specs, part numbers, photos etc as that is my main area of interest. I love history and buy any old book I find and its great to see logs of events and results that I can match up with the old works cars. I also go through reg number lists to see if any of the old works cars etc are still on the MOT database. (I also like to do the mot test check on feature cars of old magazines)

Quite a rare model. I’ve got one which you can have for free if you want it, it’s not in bad shape at all, but the only catch is it’s currently without an engine! WHat colour is it, and what interior does it have, i could be very tempted as i have a vitesse turbo engine in the garage! Oh,I sense this could be the start of more Epic Rovering.

An epic Rover thread, brilliant. I love the idea of a diesel SD1. Much the same way as I miss my old Merc Diesel, its nice to have an old school diesel beat, plenty of torque and an interior as comfy as being at home. Well done for saving it. Hats off to you for commitment. Thanks. Yes your comment on Mercedes diesel beat is spot on. Something trustworthy and reliable about them. I like that the engine is basically full mechanical injection, and very little to go wrong (fingers crossed). Ps I actually really want an old diesel merc! I have owned a couple of old Diesel Mercs, I got a tatty but mot's 300D for not much money and ran it for a couple of years, strange being a twin cam 24v 6 pot auto, but then naturally aspirated (only option in rhd) It sounded gorgeous, once warmed up you didn't know it was a diesel well sound wise any way. You could tow anything without noticing so much torque. it was slow but a very relaxing way to travel and good MPG too, you could go out and not spend £100 every time. It was the type of car that you always felt would get you home (although a bit late in that heavy W124) I do love a mechanical diesel. Nissan SD33 out of a Patrol is a splendid engine too, well worth transplanting into something that doesn't dissolve like a Nissan body.

I bought them as a 5th set for my rallyrover. But I have also a 218 VVC coupe.

I love the way that looks. Last year I went and picked up some 218 VVC wheels, the guy had a Tuscan challenge engined SD1, similar arches and I think they where 305 P Zero's from a Countach!!! Had a very similar stance. He also had a Lancia 037 Stradale!

Well I haven't updated the thread for a while. I have been busy, and all the cars on this page have now run out of mot. I don't have much time to use them anyway. I have far too many cars!
Anyway, the MGF was advertised a few places, I know it would sell if I put it on ebay, but I don't want to deal with all the dribbling morons that enjoy wasting peoples time. It is still here, and I think its the best way. A lot of people, even enthusiasts on the various fb pages etc seem to scrap or break there cars when the slightest little bit of money need spending on them.
For now, it will be allocated a little space, stripped down and thoroughly sorted. My main aim will be improving its performance in all areas, preventing future issues and changing a few bits and bobs to my personal taste. I am not a fan of show ponies so it will not be made shiny. I prefer to keep original character.
The tomcat needs some work on the sills at the rear. One of the brakes is sticking on and a few suspension knocks have surfaced. So I will need to give this one some attention..
The SW, well, it gets a full service and check over before and after every rally respectively, so its in very good health. Will get round to booking an mot at some point.
The next projects on the list are 4 wheel drive. A head swap on my Mk1 Shogun, Possible a body/chassis swap on the oldest known mk1. Really I also need to dig out some Land rover parts and get the S3 TDi sold. il add the LR updates here, I think I have a Mitsu thread on the go somewhere or il start one soon.

MGF 1800cc roadster. Great fun little car to drive, I already have a Rover Tomcat for weekends though. I bought it when I had a long commute, but now I cycle to work it just sits there doing nothing. It has a fair history file, doesn't use any oil or water. It is tatty, but its a great car to have fun with and not worry about leaving places. Roof and rear window in reasonable condition. More details and pictures in my Rover thread. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/204552/rover-200-tomcat-mgf-keeping?page=1&scrollTo=2419468Email is probably best contact, james fuller 191 @gmail dot com (no spaces)

The MGF will be going up for sale. I have changed jobs and now work locally and cycle in, its just sat there unloved. I use the Rovers at weekends so would be better if this moves on to a new home.

I spent 2 days on the paint. Clayed, compounded, polished and waxed. Hard work in this weather but well worth it. The dull paint used to feel very gritty, now it is like glass and has a lovely shine to it. All the leather has been cleaned and treated so it looks and smells great in there now. Took it to its first show, the evening meet at Earls Barton and it surprised me how much attention it got. Also at the same show, my mate brought out his Ninety V8 after its 10 year long restoration.

Just a small update, but some satisfying little jobs done as i'm still waiting for parts. The two sunroof spoilers were not springing into place, so not working at all. Managed to drill new holes and refit springs in a different place. Now working good but annoyingly managed to drill all the way through one so need to find another... The rear spoiler had been removed and repainted just before I bought it, but was not fitted correctly, if you look at my original photos you will see the front sitting high. Now sorted.... Got the remnants of the 'coupe' badge and the other sticker off finally without any damage to paint... The clock surround had been painted silver, annoyingly eye catching, plus a huge reflection in the screen. Painted it black again now.... Also... ive got a 2nd hand manifold, that I will put stainless studs in and re heat wrap. New down pipe and new cat. No probs with the above, but the centre pipe has caused a lot of problems finding just the right one, with two different companies saying they cant help. Now should have one on the way, if it really is the same as the picture, it will be correct! Will wait and see. Fitted a new door switch, so alarm and interior light works correctly. Painted the wiper arms as quite tatty looking, back on with new blades.

What a car, such a shame, but it could have been worse, and in the long run, it looks like it will benefit its longevity/ease of repair in the future.
Nice to see some proper metal working too, looking forward to see more.

On the MGF front I have had some changes of mind.
As both Rovers will end up on GAZ Golds I think I will keep the Hydragas set up, especially as I have found a company that will replace the spheres with freshly valved, and re nitrogened recon items when my old items decide to not play ball any more. For now I am going to choose some new tyres and dampers, but I don't think I will be following the norm with this.
I can only collect parts for now, this one cant come off the road until the coupe is tried and tested and good for the daily grind.

That was close, but disaster averted luckily.
Just had the bonnets up comparing bits on the SW and the Coupe. I just happened to give the top hose a squeeze as I eyed the coolant level, and there was a 'hiss' Swapped the caps on the cars, and the hiss moved to the other car, the pressure part has fallen to bits on inspection. I know the caps are an issue, and some people replace them annually. But this is the first one that has ever failed on me.
Anyhoo, I've been looking over the coupe here and there, few more things to add to the list...
Radiator looks old, so will be replaced when the coolant is drained for other work. Not sure yet, Valeo OE or find a nice alloy one. Some of the coolant pipes are not ageing very nicely so may aswel be done now. Cambelt and water pump and the coolant elbow gasket. I'm going to change the oil again as I don't know what the last person put in it. Brake rebuild and braided hoses. Suspension seems well damped and ok at the moment, so might not upgrade just yet. Need to choose some new tyres. I'm going to replace the Cat, as I'm going to do the rest of the exhaust it has probably aged a fair bit so a new one will breath nicer.

I've not seen one of these for years. As a kid in mid 90's US. I was mystified by these (there was a guy with one, he also had a Merkur XR4Ti)
Its so cool you have one over here.

The centre caps are always tight on the o rings! If not they can rattle at low speeds. Sometimes with my B10 I can do it first time, sometimes a few attempts and a cup of tea are required.
The brass lock barrels where seized when I got it, of course, couldn't check the tyre pressures, so lots of patience and I think I used GT85 but any penetrating oil should do, and after lots of soaking, lots of jiggling and little movements they came free.
