New car incoming.... Some Triumph flavour on this thread soon. All Shoguns and Land Rover have been sold
The rally rover is kept in good health and still gets regular airings around the farm. Tomcat and MGF have been mothballed for now, as I have no use for them and no time to use them.
My life is pretty much consumed by bike racing, so I only really spend time on a bike, or sometimes driving a practical car. This is where the Triumph comes in. More will be revealed soon, it is having some work done and I'm expecting to take delivery late September.

Wow, Denon!! I had no idea they did car stuff. Found a Technics head unit on ebay a couple of years back and that was a first for me.

Not period correct, but not current in my car. Kenwood headunit and 3+1 MD changer That is a cool setup. MD is a nice touch. Reminds me of the double setup you could get in the Sapphire Cosworth.

I've always tried to keep ICE period in keeping with my cars and I'm happy to have owned the best of Sony, Pioneer, Nakamichi etc. I spent a lot of time getting the correct Becker for one of my old Mercs, and while on a different Merc parts mission was when I first laid eyes on a Clarion G80? seperates system.
So what epic retro sounds do we have here on the forum? Extra internet points available if anyone can remind me of an offshoot brand of (pretty sure it was) Pioneer. I had a 90's Toyota Surf years ago with a 2 stack of DIN sized head units for tape and CD. Cant for the life of me remember what they where called.

I'd go for a pinin if I needed something that size.. I've got a lot of friends in a lot of different 4WD clubs with a lot of different cars, Mitsubishi doesn't have a fabulous reputation for reliability. In general, Mitsubishi have more than their fair share of problems. (although, I would say the diffs are very nice) I've had 7 Shoguns (still have 3, none of them work) two Nissans (modern and old school) and a couple of 'proper' Land Cruisers, oh and a Trooper 3.1d. To be fair, the Trooper was the best of the bunch. I can assure you, if I ever have to buy another proper 4x4, like with a chassis, low range etc, it will be a Land Rover. We have an original Mitsubishi Outlander (the other halves car) 2.4 petrol, brilliant 4x4 system and its a great car on and off road, much better than the later ones. Unfortunately, the rust is taking hold of the remaining ones, and the recent ones I have seen for sale have LPG. I have driven a few smaller Toyotas, not bad, but I would have a Jimny first. (although an old Tercel estate would be way cool)

Nice looking project. I had a 944 years ago and loved it. There is a guy running a 924 road rally car which gets on ok. I always fancied doing a Audi AAN 5 pot swap into something like this.

Mitsi Pajero Junior? Don't know if they're any good. Might be called something else in UK/Europe markets. I believe that's the mitsubishi pinin over here in the UK. There is a smaller one than the pinin, cant remember what is is called but its J only model.

Well all things considered. I reckon I will be looking around for a petrol Freelander. All parts are easily available from specialists and they are all cheap, even transfer boxes etc don't cost too much should the need arise.
A bonus to this is I can use it in more clubs trials for tyro events so my nephew can once again compete. (A majority of off road clubs are ALRC and so 'Land Rover only', so this vehicle could also be used in the nationals)

I did have a look at one of those Pinins but the GDI engine is not a goodun. Shame as the rest of the car is nice. My other half has a mk1 Outlander 2.4 Sport and that is a damn good car, great handling, awesome 4x4 system and a powerful engine, i've just not been able to find another as good or I would. They where always fairly rare. Funny thing is, the second generation where made heavier, slower and not as nice to drive and they sold 3 times as many.

Some very interesting suggestions above, thank you all for your input. Certainly have some more ideas and things to search on ebay.
I don't know why I had never thought of a Freelander before. Have had no end of green ovals before. I love the K series engine. I just did a bit of googling and you can buy some interesting bits for them 'off the shelf' which may be handy as my cars are sometimes called upon for marshalling/course cars and recce/service barge on rallies.

The Ssanngyong is a weird thing, I quite like it but it is a traditional 4x4 with a chassis. I would like something petrol and more car like.
The Honda above is pretty damn cool. I used to have a CRV and I liked that a lot. Maybe an HRV is worth looking at too.

In the next few months I will be looking for a modernish hatch. I need to get my mountain bike in the back to get to races (removing both wheels to di this is not a problem) and 4 seats at other times will be a benefit as my other cars are all 2 seaters.
There is a very good chance I will stick to what I know and like, some sort of MG Rover K series.
4 wheel drive could tempt me away though (I don't need 4x4, just like the idea of a really small one)
I've always liked the idea of a late 90's Daihatsu Sirion 4wd. If anyone has or did own one would love to hear more about them. Subaru Justy's seem to have all but disappeared. I know Suzuki recently did a 4wd Swift which I like, but its more money than I want to spend. Any others i should consider?

Finished 2018 with no cars on the road. I don't need a daily driver any more, and have not had a car on the road for a couple of months, but will have this sorted soon.
Rally car is going for mot in the next few weeks. I have a few details to improve on it too, new kevlar tank guard, floor pan guards and sill guards, carbon door trims, new Lexan windows but only really want to buy a tailgate one for my new tailgate, rather than 500 for a set I don't need.
MG is off the road, and I'm collecting parts for it. working on it in the summer and plan for it to be off the road for the next 1-2 years.
Tomcat is off the road, needs restoration but I wont be starting work until the MG is done.
I'm being realistic, and my other projects (3 mk1 Shoguns and a 200TDi series 3) are going to be sold as soon as I can sort it all out. As I just don't have time to do them and have no use for them if they ever do get finished.
I will be looking for something fairly practical and simple. (preferably K series powered and room in the back for a mountain bike, both wheels removed if necessary) I like the idea of a Metro GTi 16v or Rover 114 16v, have also considered going older, think Rover 220GTi, Austin Maxi, maybe Rover SD1. But most probably I will be looking for another Rover Streetwise 1400 or MG ZS 120 hatch.
Although if I found a Daihatsu Sirion 4wd in good condition I would probably go for that, always wanted one.

Well this definitely fits into the 'looks like it should but can't bracket' ... My Dutton Sierra is effectively one wheel drive having no LSD or driven front axle, all mk2 escort with a 1993cc pinto and 5 speed box. It does have ground clearance and a sump guard but thats all folks...
But it's still fun in the snow. It does do soft road very well, grass car parks and stuff can be attacked with gusto but it's only 1000kg so can get a bit animated ... I really like that. Is there much room in the back, looks like a reasonable sized estate? Do these ever come up for sale? I'm in the planning stages of what I'm going to get next and would consider one of these.

I abused the old Landies, never had many problems but occasionally broke a diff or halfshaft until I learned how to be smooth off road. Anyway, I was talked into buying one of those modern reliable J 4x4's You have probably all heard the Nissan horror stories of these carp engines and boxes. I cant remember when I got this, or in what order, but picked up this 90 300tdi CSW when it was about 9 years old. That was one hell of a great vehicle, did a Sahara trip, a couple of 12 car road rallies, RTV trials and everything in-between
