Is your Dad a pro coachbuilder? Amazing project... impressive all around. John He keeps tabs on this thread, this comment will make his day. I’m lucky to have him, not least because he’s taught me so much over the years.

We’ve always used the hammerite ‘rust beater’ in beige (well it says it’s beige but we’ve nicknamed it pink). Unlike normal hammerite it doesn’t chip; it stays pliant, and is a sod to get off once cured. We’ve used it on cars for years; I’m sure there are better options but it’s done us ok. No paint removes the need to wax box sections though.

The list of stuff to do goes: - grill and bonnet (as their fabrication will damage the primer) - finish seam sealing - finish pre-paint bodywork - final primer coat - paint So we’re nearly there

Preview of the new bonnet (scratch built in aluminium). This is my old mans handy work; this would be well outside of my skill set! There’s a fair amount of fettling to do, but I’m amazed by the result so far. The photo also shows the beginnings of the custom grill that I’ve started to fabricate. I’ve also found a solution to a problem caused by the steel wheels. Impreza STI’s come with big Brembo brakes as standard, but they’re so bulky they didn’t fit under the steels. The drawing below shows the clash between the inside face of the wheel (red solid line) and the brakes (black line): Obviously 20mm spacers would be a no go, so I needed to find an alternative front brake set up but not one that was a downgrade from the standard 4-pot Brembos. There is a AP kit that would fit with some 4mm spacers, a set from willwoods that would go straight on (but do not have dust boots built into the callipers), but then I found these: They’re Subaru specific 6-pots branded Fuji Racing, but made by an established OEM brake manufacturer. They’re 355mm disks, which is bigger than the original Brembos, but the calliper sits further back so clears the wheel face perfectly. I’m well happy with these.

The issue may be control integration of modern hvac into the car systems. Even older early 2000 stuff has electronic controls. One modern (ish) small hvac system that came to mind is the one from the early (2002) smart car. I could be wrong but I think that the heater controls were cable operated, and the A/C (when fitted) looked like a single separate on/off switch on the top of the dash. Might be worth a look.

As always, thanks for all the comments. With the lockdown I’m not able to get to the car. My father is carrying on with the bodywork, making great progress. But it will cause an issue eventually, when all the bits I was meant to be doing are late to the sequence of events. Fingers crossed for social ‘bubbles’ being approved soon. Anyway; pics with 90% of the bodywork done, and with the car enjoying the bank holiday sun:

Keep up the great work hopefully my Friends Firenza/viva E will give you some inspiration Not seen that one; very interesting build, and well executed by the look of it. Always wanted a C20LET in my HB cabriolet, never had the readies back then though. Friendly note though: Remembering all the fuss that happened earlier on in this thread, you may want to check with your mate if he’s cool with the reg showing.

New battery location: With the tight front end, the original battery location was a no go. The custom bracket placed the battery right over the rear wheels.

I always thought the smaller capacity engines (c16xe down) needed custom flywheels to work with the gearbox, could be wrong though.
The red top (c20xe) is old enough now that it’ll be impossible to get a cheap donor car, and many of the engines for sale will need a rebuild. If I was building a car based on this family of engines, I’d either make do with a x20xev (ecotec) or look for a z20let (turbo ecotec).

Can we have some more please ? Not much else to report other than the hood scoop and the radiator. The gearbox has come back from the (more expensive than anticipated) rebuild, the seats have come back from the trimmer (stripped but not trimmed; he’d had them a year, so we gave up and picked them up...now looking for a new trimmer). I know it doesn’t look like it, but the welding stage is almost done...then I’ll be handing it over to the old man for prep and paint. As soon as I’m done with my bit it’ll excellerate a fair bit...I have very little free time these days.
