So, I’m currently trying to fix the electric antenna/aerial on my 95 Daewoo Espero. Ever since I picked the car up 18 months ago the motor of the antenna grinds and makes a horrible and stupidly loud and embarrassing clicking noise on either extension or retraction. (Even people across the street can hear it and look at me as if the car's about to explode!)
It only happens after it has fully extended or retracted. During the physical movement of the antenna it works and sounds as it should.
I stripped the boot down yesterday and removed the whole unit, tested with the cover off and it looks as if the motor doesn’t switch off once the antenna has reached its maximum or minimum height. The clicking is made by the mechanism being forced to move past its operating range.
As this is only one of the last few on the road, and parts are no pretty much no extent, I’m stuck and advice on how to repair this.
My guess is it’s something to do with the circuit board/controller in the motor which I have removed from its waterproof housing and is covered in brown waterproof glue/rubber so I can’t even make out the components. (Electrics are not my strong point!). It does have a modern aftermarket Radio fitted about 3 years ago so this could be a suspect?
So, my question is, has anyone else had this issue before? If so how did you sort it?
I have thought about buying a universal electric antenna and swapping the motor or picking up the only Daewoo electric antenna I have found (which is for a Lanos and has a completely different part number) and hope I can salvage some if not all of it to fit the Espero.
I’m not entertaining a static antenna, which I've had suggested as the car is pretty much showroom with only 19k miles from new. I want to preserve it as long as possible and as original as possible.
Anyway, help?? This is driving me nuts!
Thanks in advance
