Hello there, my 13 year old son has expressed an interest in building up a go kart, with a view to going racing. This sounds like a much better idea than playing on computer games, so naturally, I agreed. He is going to start with a bare chassis and build it up as and when his paper round wages can buy some parts.
We found a decent chassis but I under-estimated just how much a courier would charge to pick it up. If anyone is heading up this way I would really appreciate it if they could help us out. It is just a bare chassis, so not very big or heavy.
Even if you are not heading all the way up north, I would happily come and meet you or collect it from you. Petrol/beer money provided, of course.
Thanks Stewart

I've been running a £550 Jeep Cherokee for nearly a year and I love it! However, the MOT tester advised me to get rid of it before the next test as it will likely need some serious work. If you spend a little bit more you seem to be able to buy a much better car.

I really like a genuine, old, well used car with a story to tell but I have to say that I really dislike anything that looks fake or forced. In particular, anything that has been made to look deliberately worse than it is. In my mind, what even tops that is any vehicle piled high with excess junk. This seems to particularly afflict the VW scene for some reason.
Having said that, in the late 90s/early 2000s, I ran my split bus in grey primer, complete with rusty doors and slammed suspension. However, this was just a combination of how it evolved under the 'care' of previous owners and the fact that I couldn't afford to make it look better at the time. At no point did I deliberately make it look any worse!

Not a big one, by any means but diesel Jeep Cherokees are known for cracking the cylinder heads. If you can find a new one, they cost a fortune and are quite a bit of work to fit. When the temperature gauge started to climb I instinctively knew what it would be and started making plans to break it for parts. As a last ditch, I thought I would chuck in a bottle of Steel Seal. Surely this pro-level bodge wouldn't work, would it? I was surprised to see that it actually did! It has now been running happily for about 6 months like that.
The only issue I have with it is that I am too ashamed to tell my brother about it, who is a proper mechanic and would disown me for such a crime.

[ God I'd love to see a resurgence of this style, with wraps and things now it would be easier too! One of my all time favourites! Usually spotted with a lilac and yellow friend.

You might need to be careful with the lows. A mate of mine had a standard one and still ripped the sump off on a cobbled street...

Looks great, Rich! I wish I had time to work on mine but it is more of a workhorse than a cruiser, mainly hauling around timber and plasterboard for the house project. I'm sure the diesel is a ticking timebomb but for now it keeps trucking along. I love the daylighters but I was impressed with the performance of the LED light. Mine has two big rectangular lights on the bull bar and four on the roofrack. To be honest, though, when you switch them on you can hardly see the difference on the road!

I agree that Facebook posts lack the depth of information that you get on a forum. The VW Split Screen Van Club now sees more traffic through Facebook than the forum and people do ask the same very basic questions repeatedly. I know we all have to start somewhere but it is a bit of a lazy way of finding out.
However, I am a member of a local, all cars group, The Northern Retro. This works well as it is mostly about interesting cars spotted locally and other general retro 'stuff'. As a result, people don't often post technical questions or project pics. The other difference is that is run by a couple of lads who are quite active. They moderate out negative comments and also organise regular meets and a full-on show in the summer.

The Motorvation feature in the mag has done some fabulous work with cars like, in this months issue, a Leaf and a Prius...... Dave gives me total free rein on what I put into the Motorvation pages. He doesn't know what he's going to get until he sees it. After I got a Kia Rio into issue 1, I knew I'd be able to have some fun! When I sent over the Prius and Leaf for the current issue, he didn't bat an eyelid! Here's a few of the more unusual choices I've squeezed in so far... Go and buy Street Machine everyone! :-) That Leaf looks awesome! (but I am still stuck in the late '80s!) With 3 growing kids I could be really tempted by an early Espace too.

I *may* end up going onto a history path here! -I'd buy a Rockford Fosgate Head unit. This was actually a rebadged Denon. -The active crossover would now become a digital Alto UCS-Pro item ; that was super super flexible in terms of what you could do -I managed to get a pair of Genesis amps ; a 4 Channel and a 2 channel version of that. I would kill for that head unit!

In my Beetle in the 90s I had a succession of dodgy 'bloke down the pub' head units which got stolen on average every 3 months. I quickly got into decent sounds and progressed through second hand amps and random speakers, eventually going to a full Rockford Fosgate system running 2 12 inch subs and component speakers off a mini mighty 40 watt amplifier.
The thing that sticks in my mind was paying an unheard of £300 for my first Kenwood CD player! Isn't that what student loans were for?

I agree. I know the regs were originally intended to prevented stolen cars having their identity changed so I could never see the problem with swapping a few things round to keep a classic on the road. In the old days, when these things were cheaper, it was almost always cheaper to swap to a whole new floorpan if your frame head was rotten, for example. Almost certainly makes a better, safer job of it too.

I've been a bit concerned about my Beetle but this is quite reassuring if this is how it is applied. Like lots of VWs (and Land Rovers and many others) the floorpan, engine and gearbox have been replaced over the years. If this means it will be classed as a re-constructed classic and keep the age-related ID then I would be happy. Also quite happy to keep MOTing it.

Snap! I have also just bought an XJ and the first job I did was the head unit and broken speakers in the back!
Mine is a diesel and so far, I love it!
