I'm looking for a cheap car to take me through winter so my Audi 80 doesn't get wet or cold. It must be cheap, retro-ish, interesting and cheap. The limit is £500 but would prefer to pay half that so cheap. Condition isn't such a problem as log as it has an mot. Any ideas

£250-500 is ripe territory for picking up a right bargain.....or something that bites you on the backside time and time again.
Depends what your purpose for it is really. If it is to save money then anything small engined and french will be fine
Peugeot 106/205 Citroen Ax/ZX/Saxo
Nippy, frugal, cheap to insure and run and good in snow
If it is too have some fun at no concern to costs (aside from initial outlay) then go for something completely different to what you have had before........
Big exec barge like Jag XJ

I can't see a sub £500 Jeep or XJ being anything other than a big pile of trouble.
Corolla, Avensis, Golf, Polo, Passat, the 106 suggestion is a good one, Fiesta, Ka . . . I think it's usually best just to see what's around at the time you have the readies in your hand. If you did particularly want a 4WD, (not a bad idea in Winter), you might just get a sound RAV4 on that budget.

The idea of a big jag is very tempting. Although could come with a host of problems.
Ideally it needs to work well in the cold and wet and be reliable.
Passat would be interesting

I had a £250 406 for this purpose last year and it was lovely! Now in a golf mk3 diesel which isn’t as nice to drive but alright for a car that’s about as cheap as they get.

Get adding yourself to local FB selling pages, both car specific and general selling pages.
Will find some real bargains on there.
I would suggest late 90's/eary 00's Japanese cars.

Agreed. As long as it’s a petrol one. The 1.8 is the strongest. A mate of mine bought one off his neighbour for £400 about 5 years ago and it’s been his daily ever since and by far the most reliable car he’s ever owned. It was starting to get a little leggy and the clutch and DMF felt like it was coming near the end of the life, so instead he bought another, newer, lower mileage one (05 reg. old one was 02) off eBay for £250 with EML on. One new EGR later and a weekend machine polishing it, deep cleaning the interior and swapping his Titanium X alloys etc over and it looks almost like a new car. He’s still using the old one, but he’ll sell it after changing a wheel bearing and probably get his money back. That’s bangernomics! Great cars too, feel solid and drive really really well.

What about a Focus? Ive had a 1.6 petrol and 1.8TDCi that lasted 5 years, then a 1.8 petrol thats into its second year. My eldest daughter has a low miles 1.6 that she got for £350 last year and i will be surprised if she doesnt have that for a good few years.
don't think anyone had mentioned Xsara and Seat Leon. Found the ones i hired to be great fun to drive, but the same age Golf was a bit bland. Even an Almera was a better drive! Arabest, Geoff.

I'd say if this winters going to be anything like the last, you cant really beat an early discovery. You can still get them that cheap and the 200tdi and 300tdi engines are bulletproof

Pretty much any old Fiat, I've had a couple now and have always been surprised by just how good they are.

Puma - great fun. For £500 it'll be a good one too.

I think these days a good one is a little more, which I'll come onto. Maybe I've been unlucky with finding cheap cars but that's my experience. Focus is a good shout vbut they are always pricier than their Mondeo brethren. These days it seems bargains that aren't a heap of curse word are trickier to come by, unless you are willing to risk neglected stuff! It's one reason why my budget for the W124 went up sharply from £500! But, the Mk3 Mondeo in petrol form may well prove the exception! the 1.8 and 2.0s are very solid engines. The V6s are lovely but they cannot be run with neglect; they will bite you otherwise.

ok , I'm biased but grab a 106..... 16 months on from handing over £300 it still amazes me...!!

Back in January 2017 picked up a 2001 Mondeo Ghia X Tddi 165k on the clock for the princely sum of £285...It's just come through its second MoT with only minor defects(about £60 to put right). Gutless perhaps but full electric leather,OE dog guard. Perfect for what i needed and owes me nothing now!
