They've got a replica of the armoured train at New Romney station that one of their employees built. I believe the original was lost after the war.
The railway was a fairly major player in the region during the war, it was used to provide transport all along that part of the coast, where all the holiday camps were used as training camps, and it also helped with the construction of Operation PLUTO (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Pluto).
The armoured train acted mostly as a decoy, as from the air it was difficult to discern the size of the train. It certainly got bombed a lot. During the war it was commandeered firstly by the Royal Engineers, and was kept in very good nick, but they moved on and the people who commandeered it after (I don't recall who) didn't look after it. Meaning that it was in a very sorry state after the war was over. There was only enough undamaged track for a single line to Dungeness, and they still haven't managed to reinstate the second line, though I don't think there's much call for it.
The armoured train is said to have shot down a Messerschmitt, but I don't know if that was a confirmed kill or not.

I have a 1987 MTD Lawnflite, very similar to the one described in this thread in the garage (near Canterbury) that needs some restoration if you're interested... I'm interested!

Also many heritage railways now have useful machine shops and I'm sure would help you to learn in exchange for some unskilled work from you. My step dad runs a miniature railway. I know they have a very well furnished engineering shed and I can't work out why I didn't think of that!! I'll have an ask about doing some volunteering there. Some of you may recall I rebuilt their little railway bike a year or so ago. (https://imgur.com/FUbA3RK) Maybe I'll get them to show me how to run some wheels and I can make a bike to match the one they've already got. Thanks for all the advice!

Going back to the shelves idea - have a shelf for 'curse word I'm not sure I need'. Leave everything on there you're not sure you'll need going forward. If it's there after a a few months then have a rethink. If you use it in that time then it gets kept. If not, and it's important, keep it another few months. If you don't use it and it's not important/it's cheap to buy a new one then just chuck it.

Learning how to machinemerryck

Hi all,
I've taught myself to weld (mig) and taught myself to fix cars (classic) but would like to learn a bit more about how to make things. I've been watching Youtube videos of people making bits here and there for years. I finally bought myself a pillar drill so I can now drill holes straight (baby steps!) but was wondering if there are any resources to learn how to machine?
I think we've all read through a johnnybravo thread and thought to ourselves 'Man, I wish I could make things like that'. I just don't know where to start. I can't afford to buy the gear, I can't afford to go to college/take an apprenticeship. Is there another way to learn this stuff?
How has everyone else learnt/taught themselves?

When you're building your shelves, and you think to yourself "That's plenty of shelves."
You're wrong. So very very wrong. Put shelves everywhere. Make that garage hold as much curse word as it can and there will always be space to work in.

I suppose with little/poor/no suspension, the way they keep those big tyres low for grip, if you get enough twist on those tyres as you launch you've got quite a bit of upwards force waiting to be let loose. How interesting!
Another life goal. Jump a car from a standing start!

That's extortionate!! For that kind of money you can rent a large industrial unit in Medway!

One of those brass petrol caps would look cracking on a Mini. I hate to think how much it'd cost to get one made!
I always wanted to be able to machine knurling on things, but I think I'd just end up adding it to everything. Phone? Knurled. Wedding ring? Knurled. Coins? Knurled.

We've been setting up a Canterbury Cars and Coffee event at the Independent Pedaler near Bridge, Canterbury. A couple of us have met there.
I've been keeping an eye out on local industrial estates but nothing much has come up and there aren't a lot that will allow any motor trade unfortunately.

Yeah, I've finally found a decent Transit forum and discovered this for myself. Currently on the lookout for anything suitable.
I'm thinking if I pick one up cheap enough and get it into the garage then it'll be worth the cost just to learn what it's about. I'm hoping to make something that looks cool, is reliable and can be used to advertise my restaurant.
We'll see!

Anyone got much experience removing the cab from a transit tipper? Just thinking it would make a good basis for a hot rod pickup, but I don’t have any real experience with transits!

That's a perfectly valid opinion, but there's also the possibility of it creating something even better from the two.
I'd very much like to try and make a small electric roadster out of a Midget.
Rear wheel drive/inline engine so mounting the motor is simple, small and light for efficiency, reasonable boot space for batteries. You should be able to do it without needing an IVA. It would be interesting to see what it ended up like, but the cost is just too prohibitive at the moment. Especially as you could end up with a car that has completely lost it's soul.
