Hi all, Some progress at last. Pics will follow soon, but I have eventually managed to get back to the Aerosedan. Earlier this week I got it onto axle stands (on top of the trailer/platform) and have since removed the wheels and brake drums. Progress on this will be slow as I will be doing a full brake rebuild, but only after cleaning the underneath and painting. While I'm in the dismantling stage I'm trying to figure out what parts I need to replace. I definitely need to replace all 4 the steering tie rod ends. Catch 1 is that Rock Auto (who are cheap and easy to buy from) don't stock them. Chevy's Of the 40s do, but the price just seems exhorbitant. Catch 2 is that the right hand tie-rod is of the non-adjustable type ($150-$180 before shipping and tax). I figured that if the taper on the tie rod ends is the same and the tie-rod length can be adjust to the same, then surely I can fit others. This is where you come in!!! Anyone know what other vehicles use a tie-rod end where the tapered section has these dimensions: Length: 0.74 inch Small end: 0.51 inch Large end: 0.592 inch Obviously the above measurements might be fractionally off, but based on Google these seem plausible. For example I was thinking of the VW Beetle/Bus tie-rods and tie-rod ends. Anyone? ? Not sure I am following the non-adjusting bit of your post but this seems to cover what you need. Anything happening here? A bit I guess. Hoping to arrange paint guy to come and look next weekend so in the meantime I am saving money by removing old paint and attempting to get some of the loose panels to line up. Door on with lock and catch, not really lined up yet but it opens and closes! Gaps look ok (or at least like they can be made ok), skin is only folded round at the moment so much tweaking can occur before it's tacked into final position. That's a handy state of affairs given the visible misalignment at the bottom of the door in the picture: I've also been stripping paint (and vinyl roof glue ) from the roof. Or to put it another way, I supervised the process..... My assistant/slave/father managed to get about a foot in on either side but the centre of the roof is very floppy and we didn't want to damage it with too much pressure (all the roof has been sanded by hand to avoid denting it). Enter the patented "bird table, old cushion, prop type device": With this wedged up under the roof it was a lot less wobbly whilst sanding. I decided to actually help so we finished off the entire roof (still by hand), it took about another 2.5 hours between the pair of us so I guess there is a good solid days work in hand sanding a roof... It'll need going over prior to paint with a finer grade of sandpaper but for now a dusting of etch primer was wapped over the top: So hopefully next weekend will involve a discussion with the paint guy and more fitting and aligning of body panels. This would all be helped if I could remember to bring the freshly painted hood hinges back from my work........

Ordered an English size toolkit, when it gets delivered I can take off the tow bar(finally). I finally worked out this means spanners in imperial sizes! I initially thought it was a tool kit with a beer and a pasty in it. Nice car, good luck with it.

Unsurprisingly the DVLA are utterly hopeless. I decided to declare SORN even though I think I don't need to but, hey, its free so what does it matter. So I do it, I have the email and everything. Nothing changes on the vehicle enquiry website though so I forget about it. I get a letter over a week later saying I have to tax the vehicle or declare SORN! So I tax it! It's free, it doesn't need an MOT so I figure why not try that, and it worked.........
Literally makes no sense at all.
I have done nothing on the car of course.

drdick Thanks for that Do you know if the seals and bearings are standard through the atlas range Sorry, missed this. Sadly I think there are a couple of sizes but not 100% on that. I guess measuring would be best but that potentially leaves your car up on axle stands for a bit. You might be able to ask at a motor factor if there is a difference between capri and cortina say?

Seems like this isn't really getting done at the moment. The upshot of buying another project is that I have spent time on that and also now find myself working in a much smaller space I haven't been totally slacking, I have started to repair the bonnet: The nose of it was all rotten and misshapen as well as being a complex shape. I have gone for the "patch it up solid and get the final shape with filler" approach. I've done a lot of it, there are about 8 patches in there and I still have a few more to go. As you can see I've also applied etch primer. Hairymel says I should put the filler on bare metal, Google isn't any help because there seems to be a split between those that say that and those that say put primer on first. Is there a correct answer to this? I don't disbelieve the Hairy one, I'm just looking for an excuse not to whizz all that primer I applied back off again Also started putting the front wings on. After a bit of fiddling it was obvious that the bonnet needs to be there first so I'd better finish that! More worrying was that on the side where I repaired the inner wing the bolt holes on the inner don't appear to line up with the outer. This will need some checking, if they don't align I'll blame the repro panel I fitted but at least that would be an easy fix to move some holes. Painter A has also decided he can't really fit me in any time soon so Painter B will be getting a phonecall this week!

I bought a book: Possible the most niche market book available on Amazon UK but tells me what parts from Chevy, Olds and Buick versions of this car will fit. Dull, but very useful when surfing eBay US! I had it delivered to work, when I showed my colleagues I think they finally knew that I'd lost it. Who wouldn't find this fun:

Speaking as the owner and driver of an older car I would like to say that I, for one do not want to be peniled. It sounds frightful. Yeah, I'm fairly open minded but that one sounds like it would make your eyes water

I wish I had the skills, talent & balls to take on such a cool project. Keep the pics coming as progress begins. Skills and talent? I'm not sure about that, I just like to tinker. What can go wrong after all? I think as long as you are prepared to use up a lot of time and money then anyone can make an attempt. Knowing when to get help is always good too, for instance, I'd be happy welding up a suspension arm (e.g.) but I'd definitely show the first one I did to someone who knew what they were doing. What about unchopping the roof a bit at the front to gain vision and increase slopyness? Unchop? I don't know if that's even allowed! Seriously, when I get to that bit I will probably need to push the car outside so I can stand far enough away to eye the lines. Have another cool photo, the indian is made from Lucite (or PMMA, Perspex, whatever you want to call it).

So those of you that follow Dez's projects may have clocked that, in order to progress his Shoebox (among others) some cash was generated with a bit of "fleet reorganisation". In other words he sold a car or two. One of those cars has come my way.................... I'm sure some of you know how this kind of story goes. I've got the Mustang to the stage where it needs paint so there is very little for me to do until that happens. Despite the fact that there is a ton of work to do after it gets painted I start to get that itchy feeling thinking about the next project. I've always loved rods and customs so that's what I'll do next I think. I toy with the idea of building something from scratch to go through BIVA but then get cold feet after reading the manual. Browsing RR one evening I'm looking at Dez's Shoebox thread and I wonder if he bought it for himself or if he bought it with a view to doing it and moving it on. So I sent him a message to ask. We go back and forward a bit and suddenly he offers me this Pontiac. I've seen the original build thread and I really love this car so, clearly, I'm in! We agree a price and a couple of weeks later I am having a massive reorganise of my space to fit everything in! So here is the one picture I took of it outside: I cannot tell you how excited I am to own this car and to take on (admittedly a pretty big) project like this. Only time will tell whether my skill set is up to sorting out the bodywork which does have a few issues, but I'm going to enjoy finding out and can always call in the experts if it gets tricky. It's a 49 Pontiac Streamliner, it's had a roof chop, the bodywork needs a bit of "help". You can read about some of the things Dez uncovered so far in the original thread. My plans are probably not that different to Dez's; sort body out, throw in some sort of V8, bag it. That makes it sound easy but all I've really done is take some pictures: The majority is very solid for a 67 year old car.. Holding the cut off door frame up to the car tells me the roof has had about 3" taken out of it: There is lots of trim and shiny moldings: And it has an interior These are the door "cards": The seats are totally awesome: As is the dash: There is a minor problem if I combine my height, the roof chop and the standard seat though................the forward visibility, this is my eyeline: I guess I'll take some height out of the seat as it's huge. So basically, that's it, I haven't had time to do anything to it yet and I probably won't for a little while yet due to Mustang finishing, lack of funds, requirement to go on holiday with SWMBO etc. My first plan will be to do a lot of measuring to work out which bits need moving to get the body back in line. Other than that I'll just be collecting parts I need if and when I see them. Finally, thanks to Dez for selling me this. I hope he won't mind me saying that I'm not 100% sure he wanted to sell it but moving a couple of projects on to enable the completion of some others is something that occasionally has to be done.

Has SORN changed then? I sent one off a while ago and they sent it back to me. I rang them and they stated that if it hasn't been taxed since 98 there is no need for a SORN.

I'm glad I read to the end of this because for the first three pages I was all "what the curse word a clay bar?".
I'm in my 40s and the number of times I've washed a car is probably less than my age, I hate it, its boring and, basically, pointless. I get the local eastern europeans to jetwash my car every now and then, they do a bang up job for about 8 quid. But lets say I was feeling flush, are there companies out there that will clean my car with these miracle products?
