I don't know if this counts but as a student a friend and I bought a mk3 Capri which was complete except for the engine and gearbox. I towed him on a rope from High Wycombe to Uxbridge with my Maestro. He had no feel on the brakes and the first thing we did was go down a very long steep hill in Wycombe. I thought it was ok because I could feel him holding me back on the Capri brakes but when we got home he defintely rated the whole experience as a 0/10......
This was 25 years ago, I doubt we'd make it these days without a pull....

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but I could take a chip or a small panel from my car to an appropriately equipped paint shop and they could do some magic on it and match the colour? Here's the tricky bit, once I had that match which I guess would be in the form of some sort of mix of rgb, is there any paint I can get that I can brush on? I don't have spray gear, it's not that sort of project and I don't mind spending time flatting it back. It's not a touch up amount, I need half a litre or so.
I don't know if this is even possible. I bet one of you does.

I can do it at work Paul but I guess you'd have to post them/give them to Mel/dump them on my parents doorstep in Dunmow.

Bummer but, just like you, I'm collecting parts so no rush. I may have recently bought something to put them on mind you Oh aye? Is there a DickRod in the works? 🤔😂 Can I say I'm keeping my powder dry? 😂 Things are afoot, things that might be in your wheelhouse but no projects! I have too many of those so this is something different.

Another lovely project Dez. It's really satisfying seeing someone using all the correct parts even if it means waiting. I'm in the market for some 40 steel wheels too so if you've got any left over or see some you're passing on then be great to get a heads up

Oh dear, is it really 3.5 years since I posted on this thread? This means I'll have to do my best to remember where I was. By reading my own thread I reckon that, as at the last post, I had a painted car with engine, suspension and brakes attached. that was November 2017. Various documents and emails I have indicate that less than three months later I had a quote to repair the damage caused when some absolute cnuts broke into the unit again and in the process of stealing about 20 quids worth of stuff they dropped heavy things on the roof, CROWN of the bonnet and put a massive dent in the rear quarter. Basically I'm fairly sure me owning a Mustang is cursed. So back to the painters for what ends up being almost another complete respray. I get the car back again in October 2018 and secure some different storage with less robbing curse word issues. Since then there have been other life things getting in the way, a new job, having to sit at home for a year, you know the drill......... It's been slow progress (obviously really) but I'm still going. Some people might have decided the whole Mustang thing wasn't really for them, after all, I've owned two, had a total of 3 paint jobs and 2 insurance payouts and still not driven one of the bloody things. I, on the other hand, have decided the sodding thing isn't going to beat me. To summarise where I am now, engine in, plumbed, wired, exhausted and, save for the distributer wiring it turns over etc. Obviously, it wasn't quite that simple, filled everything with fluids to discover a leak on the gearbox selector shaft. No worries thinks I, I'll just change that. Some internet research later and I discover the seal is installed from INSIDE the box and there is no way I can do it on the car. So.... My sister, for no reason other than she was bored, helped me when I took this out (it might have been just after lockdown 1), she said she had not heard that level of swearing from me before.... I may get a crane and pull the engine again when I put it back rather than suffer dragging that thing under the car again. On the plus side, it gave me a chance to put a new flexplate on that actually has whole teeth all the way around its circumference. What else? It has glass, headliner, dash, all the wiring is complete and functions including adjustments to make the indicators legal. There is a lot of trim and rubber seals, the windows go up and down. I need to finish a few things before getting the front wings back on so I can then line the doors up follwed by the windows. I also splurged... So, thats it really, lots of steps forward and quite a few back. I have a week off work soon so I'm aiming to crack on and will post proper updates.

Is it as glacial as mine or you going to emerge, like a caterpillar from your cocoon, with a completely finished automobile? I'm not gonna hijack Dez's thread so I'll get photos and update mine at the weekend. Obviously the quick answer to the above is of course no cars have been completed 🤣

+1million for gaygeorge (with some bonus username points on top 😁). Did a great job on my Mustang, did a great job on it the second time round too when some scrotes broke into my garage and dented the roof and bonnet stealing about 4 quids worth of stuff 😠 Would this be a good time to tell him I scratched one of the loose panels and hope he still has some paint left? Must update my threads.....

Try STS Imports in Essex, we've used them in the past Another vote for Ron at STS Imports, used him loads of times, never any problems and great value.

I read this when you first posted it but came back here after seeing the build thread go up because it reminded me that I also have inspirational magazines stashed away. So this is my version of that magazine of yours (which I had too), a relatively simple Model T.... I just went and dug it out for the first time in years and, honestly, I'm not as love with it as I was in 1998. I'm also not so in love with the fact that this magazine is something I've had for nearly 25 years and I still don't have a traditional rod. I have too many projects (well, two) that progress at too glacial a pace but that I'm too stubborn to move on. My cars are stored 40 miles from my flat and my job doesn't really allow me the time. The real irony is that job means I'm in a position where I could afford to build a traditional rod. Maybe 2021 is the year I finally decide to give in and buy something finished or just pay Dez to build me one.......

I need some of that stuff, what brand are you using? Dynamat seems ridiculous yet using roofing products doesnt feel quite right!

This belonged to a colleague's late father and I told her I would help shift it. For that reason I am a bit light on details. It has mega-mileage, around 170k. Garaged for the last 15 years, body is in good nick but has some issue with suspension, a saggy torsion bar? I know nothing about Citroens so this may or may not make sense. It has MOT until August, is a runner etc etc. It's green.
If anyone is interested I will go over there and get pictures and actually inspect the vehicle. Drop me a message.

I would definitely be doing it the way you are trying to. If you cut a large bit out of the dash you will struggle to get it all straight again (IMO), doing the small bit keeps the strength of the recess and should result in less distortion. I might even try and put a small joggled edge on your repair patch and fit it from behind. Then you'd be welding into a groove and would need less grinding at the end.
On the belt eating, if you shove the powerfile in that hole and try to file the edge with the belt perpendicular (i.e. file is sticking straight out of the dash as you hold it) I find it catches unless you are very delicate. Better to try and get some angle on it so more belt is in contact with the metal.

In the picture that show the block with the orange paint on it what is the shaft with what looks like a wheel on the end that's running in between where the followers go please? Its a pipe that forms part of the oiling system

Funny you should ask. I've got it back from the paint shop if that's what you mean! In fact I got it back about 6 weeks ago but work pressures (including 10 days in South Korea) have meant I've done very little in terms of reassembly. Here it is being delivered. And receiving the Hairy preliminary visual inspection: So now I have it inside where it is difficult to take a decent picture of course but it looks ok even if I do still need to swap the correct springs on to get it to sit at a reasonbable ride height: The sum total of the rebuilding so far has been the installation of the heater and enough of the dash to support all the wiring: I'll be honest and say that it's unlikely any major stuff will happen before Christmas, just bits and bobs when I can. I'm hopeful to drive it next year of course!
