Is it a ballast resistor system but missing the balast resistor? Is the coil the correct voltage?
You could try disconnecting the points and the coil then with a multimeter measure the resistance of the cable with respect to ground. It should be open circuit. If it isn't you have a short to ground in the wiring somewhere.
Or you could disconnect the existing wiring from the points and coil and run a temporary cable in its place and see if the problem is still there.

I had a SIP MigMate 90, bought for £50 off a mate, blew holes in everything. After much thought and dithering I bought the RTech on 12 months credit. Wow, what a difference, even an occasional welder like me can make good welds on my 50 year old MG Midget, in my opinion it was worth the money, made making patch panels and glueing them in an enjoyable experience. It may be expensive, but worth it for the lack of frustration I had with the ancient SIP. My experience also. Unfortunately the RTech cost (even on credit) is completely out of the question. Doesn't matter how good it is if I can't afford it I'm afraid.

Thanks for that, it looks ideal. I still have some bottles of gas from the old mig (does it go off?) and a mask but I'm going to replace it with an automatic mask.

Yeah, I looked on there but found it to be like a HiFi forum. Unless its mega expensive its junk!!! The cheapest recommendation on there was an R-Tech welder which is just under £600, more than double the price of the Draper welder. I'm not looking for something to build a car with, just to weld the ocassional patch on it.

Some welding needs doing on my Avalanche chassis so I have figured out that at the age of 62 its time I learned to Mig weld. I did a bit in the past using an old and intermittant mig welder but think its time I got something that works properly and had another go myself.
Not looking to spend a fortune but have found a Draper 70047 welder on Amazon for £278. Does anyone have experience of this welder or can recommed an alternative at a similar price?

Maestro van is a Land Rover Freelander mule built by Land Rover for component testing. Shown on DVLA with a manufacturers name of 'Fleet'.

DVLA says 2004 Proton Jumbuck. Looks really nice though. Wonder if they have done anything to the interior?

I've always liked those Proton's. Don't see many of them around these days. I guess most were either worked to death or disolved in rust.

That looks like a really good basis for an extremely nice car. I much prefer the interiors of cars from this period than the current tech fests that won't last anything like as long as this has. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Looks like its on a 90's HiLux or HiLux Surf chassis. Appears to even have the Toyota dash. I was trying to figure it out, google suggests it's on a Suzuki chassis - there are pictures of it more complete on there You are right, I found a tweet by the owner from 2016 that said it was based on a LWB Vitara chassis. There are pictures of it on the net showing the reg number but there is no record of it on the DVLA. Wonder if its still around?

What is the red car next to this? it looks like an Allegro estate tuned into an SUV. I normally can't be doing with SUVs, 4x4s etc but what I can see of that one looks quite good. Looks like its on a 90's HiLux or HiLux Surf chassis. Appears to even have the Toyota dash.

I go to my local tip. They have a 1000 litre container. Not all the tips will take petrol or diesel. In mine its banned. In fact their web page states that no recycling facility will take it any more. Check on your local tip web site to make sure.

I’ve heard of eBay places that’ll do it by email. I used one of those people when I replaced the radio in my Voyager. Cost about £5 and worked fine. Just had to supply the serial number of the radio and within a couple of hours I had an email giving me the code.

I'm after some wheel bearings for my Avalanche. Rock Auto seem to be cheaper than the Cheap ones on ebay. I have had bad experiences with the Cheap ones on my Voyager (failed in less than 1000 miles) so am a little concerned at the origin of the Rock Auto items because of their crazy low price. Anyone bought bearings from them in the past that can comment on the quality? Usually anything like that has a specific brand or brands you can choose from. Even the brands will be made in China nowadays though, almost nothing of that type is made elsewhere now. I’ve never had a bad part from rockauto, but have had plenty from local motor factors (blueprint etc.). Thanks Dez, I've got a shopping list of about £500 of parts I want to get so I think I'll just go ahead and place an order.
