Yes, a 'W' terminal can be added by taking a feed from one of the windings. Any competent auto electrician should be able to do it for you. Here is an example: mk1ultra.com/mods/w_terminal.html

I'd be inclined to check the engine earth strap first. Remove it and clean both ends where it bolts to the chassis and the engine block. Also look at the earth lead on the battery and where that bolts to the vehicle frame. Check the condition of the positive cables as well.

In my experience as an ex car audio engineer, multiplugs on doors are virtually impossible to re-wire unless you have an extraction tool and new pins. They are crimped together and then inserted into the housing making them almost impossible to remove without an extraction tool. If you want to replace the speaker cables it would be easier to drill new holes in the door and B post and have a new cable run (don't forget to use grommets though). However, Unless the original cables are damaged its a bit pointless as the improvement you will hear will be in your mind!! In other words the difference is so negligible I doubt that you will hear anything different unless you want to!!

The measurement is just to ensure that the torque convertor is correctly engaged with the oil pump drive. If it isn't the oil pump is invariably smashed as the bell housing is tightened to the engine.

Just with reference to the shift 'reprogramming' - I believe this box is fully hydraulic, it was only the 4HP22E and 24E that used electronically controlled shifts. Ha ha ha, things don't have to be electronic to be programmed, this is old skool!! It is reprogrammed by modifying the valve block so that valves operate at different pressures causing shift points to change, hence reprogrammed!!

Many thanks for the info, it's certainly very useful to know. I'm assuming you're referring to the spacing when the torque converter is placed back in (i.e. the person fitting it places it correctly) as opposed to the torque converter being the wrong one for the bellhousing? The only reason I ask is because the whole set-up was removed from a V8 ambulance (as in, it's not been put together from different parts of different vehicles) and therefore the TC and all other parts are correct for the gearbox. The one thing that's confusing me is the serial/model number. From what I can make out on my 'box, the number 317 or 312: The distance relates to the measurement between the mating face of the bell housing and the fixing lugs of the t/c. If you fit the t/c to the input shaft and push it back then rotate it you should feal it engage with the oil pump. Once engaged to ensure that it is fully home make the measurement. Once you are happy it is properly mated hold it into position using a block of wood and a small ratchet strap. Then there is no chance of it shifting whilst you manouver the gearbox into position. I don't know why your box ident isn't on the list (however, it is a Land Rover list!) but I'm shure that Ashcroft transmissions will. They are VERY knowledgable about the 4HP22 and are equally helpful. www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/Shift points can be changed by having the valve block modified, but this would be a job for a transmission specialist.

When you come to fitting the box complete with the torque convertor be careful, It is VITAL that you measure the depth that the t/c sits back from the front of the bell housing and make sure that it corresponds with the correct depth for your box's serial number. If you don't you will most likely smash the oil pump as you bolt the bell housing up. This info I posted on LRO years ago may help: www.lro.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=7463Once fitted, if the kick down cable is not adjusted exactly right the shift quality will be poor to the point that it may not even shift properly at all. You may also find that you will need to get the box re-programmed as its shift points will be suited to the low ratio axle fitted to the LDV. Also change the screen filter before fitting it, it makes sense whilst the box is out!!

Upgrade the terrible headlights to HID's Think long and hard about this as they are illegal in the UK unless originally fitted to the vehicle. Take a read of www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.htmlFrom next year the changes in the MoT will also include checks for illegal lighting systems so you could end up spending a fair amount of money fitting some only to either be fined for having them or being made to take them off to pass the MoT.

Mate, I love the Broadspeed Jags! in fact anything Broadspeed, more power to you, get some pics up here with any build photo's you have, personally and it is only my preference I would love to have a broadspeed Jag like they did for the New Avengers for Steed...showing my age but that is just a state of mind! I had the pleasure of working on Steed's car in the eighties when I used to install car stereos for a living. It was in the process of being restored. I wonder where it is now?

A very clever friend of mine lives by the saying of 'Test, don't guess'. In other words, random parts swappping rarely achieves a quick or sucessful outcome!!
So, if it runs briefly and then stops what have you checked? You need to determine if it is a fuel or ignition related problem.
1. When it dies has it still got a spark?
2. Is petrol getting to the carb once it has stopped?
3. If you give it a whiff of Easy Start will it start again?
4. Is the air filter blocked?
5. Are there any air leaks?
As said, Test don't guess. It will save both time and money!!

I love these Celica's, they are one of the nicest looking cars ever made anywhere. The stance of yours is spot on. And your mates Surf is awesome. I've got one of these and would love to do the same. Any chance he will post details of how it was done on here?
