wow what a response...I usually like to reply to everyone individually but there's far too many of you to do that Thankyou to all the words of encouragement, and also thankyou to all the words of sympathy, I do understand the ones who say 'walk away', 'buy another' etc etc. However, when I buy something, it usually keeps me occupied for a few months, I get it running, and sell it on, then the money gets halved, the household gets one (usually bigger) half and what ever is left I buy another piece of 'tat' with and get to work bringing it back to life. The only vehicle that defeated me recently was a completely dissolved model Y, so in light of that , this CF isn't too bad also there is NO money left in the kitty. I have plenty of steel in the shed and a selection of welding machines at my disposal so I'm gonna try and do this one...I don't like to give up too soon I have plans ....It should be fine...right? Good on you, ill look forward to seeing how this progresses. Good luck!

Seriously, the cf panel van on ebay needs some welding, but not loads. Its been on twice and didnt sell at £750!
Buy it!
Edit... I do really want to see this get fixed though, nothing beats a weldathon thread.

Thing is, with volkswagens you can get panels, cuts, whatever you want. (Ive not read the thread, had a peek. For all i know he made all the sections himself).

There is a nice white panel van and a beige camper on ebay right now, neither would cost the earth. You already have the donor vehicle

If you can do the work yourself, you've nothing to lose by starting. Pick a section, cut it back, repair it. A sheet of mild steel is cheap, so it's not until you start on areas where you absolutely have to have a genuine panel that it starts to get expensive, and by that time you'll have more of an idea of whether it's viable or not. Genuine panels hahahaha 😉 Sorry, made me smile. There are a few period pattern ones around still and someone is making (poor) arches and sills but there good enough if you cant make your own. I did see a genuine complete rear side last year though!

WOW. Panels come up, people have started making them again. A guy on facebook chops up better ones that that so screen surrounds and roof sections can be had (lots of people want them though). Its doable, obviously, but WOW. Love a cf me If you do weld it up then go wild, may as well, box arches, huge slots, sidepipes, v8, no guilt at all 😎

The one i saw had been welded back together and had a strapping brace bolted to it. It was for sale at a local reclaim yard when i was looking for a vice. Didnt look like something i would trust! I guess everything has its physical limitations

You sure about that darren? The ductile ones have heavy duty written on the sides. If it had been ductile, it wouldn't have snapped! I may be wrong, i don't know all the ins and outs. I think the ductile ones are the steel versions you mention. I think the ductile ones were the strongest ones they made. steel ones had the word steel on the side and quite different casting (all gothic and vaulted looking) Ah, ok. Know any of the model numbers by chance?

the old record vice in my replies are ductile iron too. i remember when researching record in general, of that same Sheffield production era, they also did high end steel versions which were reeeally expensive, but could obviously punch through concrete nuclear containment wall. Bramhalls autobodies in sheffield do good work. I sort of know the owner, i know a few painters that used to work there so ive seen the standard that comes out of their shop. They are used to interesting stuff too.
Not sure if its too far though.

Thanks. Mine are ok just, but too worn for fine work. I have a small vice for that anyway. The 112 could do with some sooner rather than later. Ill store his details.

Cant add pics for some reason but i have a record 112. 6" jaws engineers vice. Big and heavy, ductile iron rather than grey iron and sold as unbreakable! Paid £40 for it from an autojumble, best part of £1000 new iirc! That’s what I’ve got back on page 1. Didn’t realise they were ductile iron though, would explain why they’re so rare. I’ve never actually seen another apart from the one I’ve got, yours is the second! Great arent they! Yep, SG ductile iron. Not sure what sg stands for. Be secure in the knowledge you can put stuff in/on them and batter the hell out of it with club hammers and it wont break The early ones have a rounded end on the handle end of the leadscrew. I think they were top of the record range, only surpassed by the 114 which is the same but a little larger. No idea why i cant post pics anymore, it used to work. Pics of it on page 6 of my bedford build thread, although you already know what they look like 😀 I had to carry mine through newark autojumble and across the car park. Nearly killed me! Whats happened to the anvil section on yours?

it has rear seats, rear windows and only a small load area. Check your logbook. Does it say N1 or M1? Caddy is N1!!! Just checked, motorway is fine at 70, only dual carriageway its restricted to 60mph. Edit, dvla have no classification for the bedford recorded.

I didnt know about this!
So, in my case, i have a 40 year old bedford cf that is capable of and legally can, do 70mph on the motorway, with all its 70's suspension and shonky brake tech. Doesnt even legally need an mot! But, my 2007 caddy that is faaar more capable and FAR safer with much better brakes can only legally do 60mph! Even though it has rear seats, rear windows and only a small load area.

Now this is back to the top, i may as well update a little. Life is back on track and everything is good. CF was in daily duty and doubling as a work van. It is now parked up for winter as i bought a tdi caddy for work.
I have the mentioned new shoes for the cf and plan on stripping the brakes and rear axle ready to redrill the pcd while its unused over winter. Hopefully by spring it will have working brakes and fancy new wheels. Need to attend to the various oil leaks that have sprung up over the last year. Bloody slant 4's, so hard to keep oil tight!
