The list of cars you own is pretty amazing. All the ones you've posted on here that I have seen you've made into superb examples. These big Vauxhall's are so rare now, trust you not only to find one but for it not to be totally rotten! These really are very large cars, just look at the length of those rear wings! I'm sure you will turn this into a stunning example once you have performed your magic. Snowfoam at the ready?!

Very nice Tarka, great spec being a manual with LSD etc. Lots of win here, let's hope its not too bad under the skin. I like the plans of stripping it down, repairing it properly and giving it a respray. Will be a proper stunner when it's finished. Keep us posted please.

Welcome to RR Jim. I do love old Fords and your Escort looks a beauty. I had a similar but white mk2 back in the day, it was mint and an absolute beast of a car. If only I still had it now! Get some more pics up as soon as you can.

Love this car and what you're doing with it. I too would rather the bonnet wasn't cut if at all possible. Whatever, this should be a real beast once its done. Keep us the great work mate.

Honestly Steve, this looks absolutely mint. It must surely be the best condition Mk1 Cavalier out there? As for the seats, can you not dye them or is the material worn?

This looks absolutely brilliant Steve, just like I knew it would. You must be well chuffed to say the least! Congratulations on a fantastic build mate, I've loved following this. Do you have any plans for another project in the future?

don't worry , panel wipe wont touch 99.9% of bumpers n stuff , it dries too quick - ive worked in bodyshops for years and never had a issue i would make an effort to go the extra mile and clean it a few times , each new rags one wet and a dry one to instantly dry off the residue Thanks Steve, I'll give that a go when I get a chance. Hopefully you were happy with the door mirror you bought from me a couple of months back? Cheers, Richard.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've got normal panel wipe which like brake cleaner dissolves very quickly. I wasn't sure if this would damage the plastic or not, I might give it a quick try on the back of one insert to see if its ok. I like the sound of using washing up liquid, mainly cos its cheap and we've got some! Thanks for all your suggestions.

I've got some previously textured (hard) plastic bumper inserts all sanded smooth ready for spraying body colour but want to know how they should be cleaned prior to priming. I've since read that apparently you should pre clean the parts prior to sanding otherwise you push any surface oils and silicones into the plastic when sanding Trust me to find that out afterwards!! Can anyone recommend a good cleaner that won't effect the plastic but will remove any contaminates before I apply the plastic primer? Thanks in advance, Richard.

My Manta hatch (basically the same shell) had rear belts as standard. The lower mount is as milord showed with an upper mount on the C pillar. The reel itself is bolted below the parcel shelf side supports. I don't know if the Cavalier hatch parcel shelf side supports has a slot for the belt to go through. Might be a case of cutting the slots and fitting the slot edge trims from a later Manta.

That looks a very tidy example for a 22 year old car. Don't know much about them, but the spec seems pretty good with the sunroof, full dash instrumentation, front fogs, tinted glass and so on. Like you say, I reckon tidy any bits up that need doing and maybe add a set of period OE alloys? Then enjoy! Good luck with it.

Nice work VW, I agree get those body repairs and the rot dealt with first. It'll all be worth it in the end. Keep going mate.

Ivo, thanks for the great write up and story so far. I see you are converting to a steering rack, an excellent idea. The OE steering box has got to be the worst aspect of the standard car's mechanical layout. My Lada 2101 was a very low mileage example when I got it yet the steering managed to be a combination of being very heavy, sloppy and indirect all in one go! Do you intend on reducing some of the excess steel on the engine mounts? I hope you don't mind me saying, but they look a bit agricultural as they are. This a fantastic build with some superb work going into it. Keep going mate and don't forget to take plenty of pics along the way.
Cheers, Richard.

Hi and welcome vagvaz. You must start a build thread on here, that looks absolutely superb. Don't keep us in suspense for too long!

Final conclusion. After lots of blocking and priming I threw some paint at it. I paid no attention to finish or dust or runs, I just wanted some protection on it while it sits in storage. Black rattle can with rattle can clear as A. Thats what I had and B. So I could see how it looks. Its ok, straight enough for an old van. 'Tell you what, that looks very good indeed. I'd be well proud of that, especially as it's the first time you say you've done anything that needed quite this amount of work. Well done mate, keep going.

When these first came out my boss had a 825SLi on a D plate. We used to borrow it whenever we could and nail it everywhere! It was bloody quick for a big car and the ride and handling were excellent too. Driven sensibly it was very refined and relaxing. However the build quality was absolutely dreadful, in particular the interior trim plastics. The cover around the drivers side internal door release fell off within months and despite the dealer putting a new one on it didn't last long before that came off too! Then the door trim surround cracked too and so it went on. After numerous electrical issues (and bits of plastic from the interior which ended up in the boot) my boss got rid of it after 3 years. A real shame to what should of been an excellent car. Hopefully the later 827 like this has the improved build quality the car deserves. Good luck with it mate, keep us posted.

Blimey, this ain't fair. How comes you have sooo many cool cars? Looks like it's had a few bits repaired since the original post? What's the standard of repair on the o/s rear quarter/under the fuel filler like?

whats peoples thoughts on mine with silver steels ?? Steve, I reckon it'd look good on silver steels, particularly the 14" "baby G60" ones. If you get the type from a mk3 Golf they are ET45 so should with suitable tyres fit under the rear arches. I'll ping you a pm with regards to the mirror you're after mate. Cheers, Richard.
