The MR2 has been sold but is still residing at the back of my garden until the new owner picks it up. As for my company car, my new Mercedes C220CDi AMG Sport Coupe should be delivered next week. Woo hoo!

Your bodyman will be barmy if he fits those whole panels, your arches look like they're 93% rot free to me! (unless he uncovers a load of wob, which seems unlikely) I rekon he should chop out the bits he needs and do some localised repairs.

As good as those repair sections seem - fitting the whole panel is no good idea... Especially the section towards the door shut is too easy to mess up and the repair panels are often no good fit - guy at work did it - he had to split & lenghten the panel by 3cm! Keep as much of the original arch as possible It would be a crying shame to cut a perfectely fine sidewall, which will probably warp when not welded carefully etc. Don't let him fit the whole panel! Would be good to get the inner arch as well, they'r cheap enough and will save the man a bit of time

(unless he uncovers a load of wob, which seems unlikely) I rekon he should chop out the bits he needs and do some localised repairs. I visited my bodyman today and showed him the repair panels, which he confirmed are good quality and made of thick steel. I asked him how far he will cut the arches and whether he intends to fit the whole repair panel. His answer was that everything depends on what he finds once he starts cutting the rusty metal out. The truth is that rust is spreading along the entire arc of each arch, either as little pimples or fat scabs. Localised repairs now may result in more rust breaking through in the future. I'd rather have the whole lot replaced now and banish rust for ever. Also, there is evidence of filler towards the rear of the nearside arch. My experience is that rust is ALWAYS worse than initially anticipated!

Have a look at my earlier post regarding the repair of the rear screen panel. The same guy is doing my arches. I don't trust many people with my Merc but I trust him. He did a superb job of fixing the screen panel and I expect he will do the same again with the arches.

That does look good! A couple of questions: Do you know why it is fitted with 280E spec bumpers? Do you know why it has a Zebrano wood strip on the dash front but not on the central console? Nice car though, looks in great condition.

I agreed with the bodywork man that I will strip the trim off the car before taking it in to have the arches done. To remove the plastic trim from the rear wings, take off the inner wing plastic liner and knock these clips out with a small hammer. Along the rear of the car, the plastic trim is held on by a self-tapping screw. I removed the electric aerial and pulled all cables away from the nearside wing. A pair of central locking vacuum pipes pass next to the offside wing. These needed removing as any heat from the welder would melt and destroy them. I removed the mechanism that operates the locking pin for the fuel filler flap. I also removed the mechanism that operates the boot lock. The boot was stripped off everything that could get in the way and I secured loose cables and vacuum pipes with cable ties. I stripped out the back seat, carpets and sill trims. I then removed the rear bumper, bumper corners, trim under the rear lights, the rear light units, mud guards, wheel trims and trim located along the length of the sills and to the front of the arches. Decades of dirt and mud. Evidence of a little knock the car must have suffered in a previous life. The damage was hidden under the side trim hence I never noticed it before. It will be dealt with before the trim goes back on. I cleaned all the muck off and taped up all the fixing holes. The forecast is rain for tomorrow and the car is not going into the bodyshop garage until Monday morning. I'm storing all the parts in my model car museum (see post below). Everything will be cleaned before it goes back on the car. The W123 has now been retired from daily work duties and therefore the original carpet (in mint condition) will be re-fitted. I've been storing it since I bought the car so not to wear it out!
