I would have that back it was, and looks like it still is, a great car Since buying the car from you, it's had the following done: 1. Proper service, including new fuel, oil and air filters, fresh oil and coolant. 2. Pair of new rear tyres. 3. New battery (not cheap!). 4. Sony MP3 headunit and 6x9 rear speakers. 5. Exhaust re-hung as it was squeaking. 6. Replacement M Sport side trims. I don't think the mileage has increased by more than 5k. Matt rarely drives it hard. The only time it gets a spanking is when I take it out for a spin. ;D The only thing that spoils that car is the steering. Due to the wide tyres it tramlines too much and feels too sticky around the centre. I like it but I prefer my MR2.

The W123 has needed a little attention. The exhaust manifold No 4 cylinder gasket has been blowing for a while and recently it got worse. I removed the manifold, which involved undoing 8 nuts / bolts. 6 nuts were 12mm, one was 13mm and one was 7/16th imperial. Fortunately, all nuts and bolts came off without drama. The cylinder head around the No 4 exhaust port was a bit sooty. Old gaskets and new. I got the new gaskets from Mercedes. Job done. I replaced one nut as a precaution. After heavy rain, water pools in the rear offside footwell. It drains down from the front footwell under the carpets. The front screen rubber seal must be letting water through or the lip around the screen has corroded. Probably the latter. I applied more sealant around the edge of the seal but that hasn't helped. I'm going to drill a small drain hole in the front floorpan, so that any water that drips in will drain straight out. Simple but effective. In the meantime the MR2 is still going strong.

Hope it's not the common tin worm infection... Check the underseal for 'crunch' noises. Where the frame rail meets the firewall, in the front foot well. Common spot on 3rd series W123s Or bonnet hinge pockets. Hope it's not that! Fingers crossed! That generation of MR2 is growing to me fast. Cheers, Jan

Cheers, Jan Jan, When I investigated the problem first time round I traced the leak to the bottom offside corner of the windscreen. I suspect there's a bit of rot in the lip around the screen. The bulkhead and hinge pockets are all solid. I recently scraped off loose paint from the hinge pockets and coated the metal with primer. I like the MR2. I've had five prior to this one and know them well. Trouble is that I rarely drive it, I love the Merc too much to leave it at home.

Stretch, thank you for your message. I have inspected the front screen rubber and can't see where the water is coming in from. Everything is nice and tight and full of sealant. We've had some heavy rain this week and a small amount of water has dribbled in. The water drains to the rear offside footwell and resides there until I mop it up. Fortunately, following the repairs I carried out last year, the floorpan is not suffering any further damage. To allow the water to drain out before it reaches the rear footwell I've drilled a hole in the front footwell. I've coated the hole with Waxoil to prevent any onset of corrosion. With the exhaust manifold gaskets replaced I am getting closer to finding the source of a blow, which can only be heard when the engine (thus the exhaust system) is cold. I suspect the blow is coming from a crack in the downpipe flexi-pipe. I've tried squirting soapy water on the downpipe hoping I would see bubbles where the crack is, but the water just evaporates. Any ideas how I can locate the crack? There is no soot build up or any obvious defects to be seen. The front brake pad warning light has been coming on recently - yellow light on the dash. I know my pads are good so the problem must be with one of the sensors or wires. I could not be bothered to investigate further, which would involve jacking the car up and taking wheels off, so for now all I've done is unplug the sensor wiring within the engine bay. The plugs are located along the tops of the inner wings. I will sort this out properly next time I have to take the front wheels off.

The MR2 is now sold. As far as the company car is concerned, I have narrowed my choice down to two cars: 1. Mercedes C220CDi AMG Sport Coupe: 2. Mercedes E220CDi SE Executive: The Coupe looks better but is smaller inside and less comfortable. The E-Class has more space and is more luxurious but looks a bit common and that shape will be facelifted in approx 12 months. I will have to keep this car for 3 years and I don't want to be driving an obsolete model after just one year. As matters stand I'm hoping to get the Coupe.

Right guys, time for a well overdue update on the W123. A few weeks ago, whilst visiting family, I spotted a Nissan Micra being taken through a bizarre 9 point turn manoeuvre which resulted in the Micra reversing into the front of my Merc: Fortunately, the only damaged caused was a broken indicator lens. Matey paid up on the spot and I bought a replacement part from ECP the following day. The Merc's service was due. I bought all my parts from ECP. Service parts for W123s are quite cheap so I went the extra mile and bought the best quality parts. Which fitted perfectly. Since my engine breather vent mods there have been no running issues, no further oil leaks and the air filter housing is clean where the vent passes through. Easy access to the sump plug. After 30 minutes every last dribble of the old oil drained out. Before and after. Fitting new plugs has cured the cold start hesitation that affected the car since I bought it! With the fresh oil, air filter and plugs the engine is running like a dream.

The exhaust blow was getting more annoying. I spent a lot of time trying to trace the location of the blow. I knew it was coming from the downpipes, somewhere towards the top, but not within the joint between the manifold and the downpipes. I had the downpipes replaced a couple of years ago, so evidently something had split (rather than corroded). Not wishing to have them replaced again, I wrapped the entire length of the downpipes with high temp exhaust wrap, usually used to reduce under bonnet temperatures. It wasn't an easy job (due to access) but I got there in the end. My first journey with the wrap fitted resulted in a lot of smoke and whiffs of melting plastic. I was a bit worried but after a few days of driving around the smells and smoke stopped and the downpipes stopped leaking. The wrap must has melted and sealed the crack. Result!
