Not sure I am alone on this one but I think one of the best cheap mods is to change size and style of numberplate. Firstly, I always think black and silver plates look better than the later white plates, probably obvious. I think a car can look loads better with a smaller plate too though. Example, from this - To this - Smaller plates obviously aren't strictly legal but probably less likely to be pulled for it on an older car as Police often get confused by different legislation. Thinking of getting a smaller front plate made up, £20, think it is worth it?

Same with black and silver plates, they should only be on pre 70's or something like that, so why do i see loads of new BMW's/Audis/Mercs etc with black and whites However i do agree the above Alfa looks better with small front plates.

Personally, with the styling cues running through the 70's, I think B&S plates suit almost any pre-1980 car.
I have some nice fresh, period correct stamped ally plates for my Cedric (white & yellow in proper font) but i KNOW when its painted black that it'd look ten times cooler with black & silvers.
More likely to get away with it on a 70's car with a private plate so the age isn't immediately determinable... plus having a rare car helps as no-one really knows WHAT it is let alone WHEN it's from!

Pre '73 cars can have black and silver plates although many cars prior to then came with yellow and white plates from new. Cars newer than '73 need to have yellow/white plates.
Its up to you if you change the style of your plates. You could go on for the rest of your life and never get pulled, you could get nicked first time you go out with them. I think if the police are in a funny mood it can be a 3 point offence, not 100% sure on that though. don't forget that incorrect plates should fail the MOT too.

What about the yellow plates with the black plastic rivet-on letters. The ones where the letters fell off when you nudged a kerb on the Austin Mini...

smaller plates look nicer because there isnt a big plastic rectangle runing the lines of the car. But that one is too small IMO.

Following on from Lankytim a bit - I like reflective yellow/black plates on anything from around the late 60s-ish onwards as it looks right for the period, check out films and photos of the period and reflective plates were quite commonplace on new motors. By the time it got to the early 70s I don't think anyone really went out to get black/silver plates, so when I see something very obviously 70s on black/silvers it just looks strange to me. Soz!

Old/original black and silver plates are fine, obviously brand new black/silver plates look a bit naff. Black/silver plastic plates= FAIL.

i don't like mucking about with plates, cant see the point of attracting the attention, however, mine came with the wrong plates on it so i've left em there as i do think they suit it and they are old enough for the paint to be flaking off them so maybe not such an obvious offense, i expect i'll get told to change them eventually.

I had black plates on a 1973 Cortina They looked the part OK, especially since the car was white with all black trim. But I got done for them. Threat of £1500 fine and withdrawal of my registration by the DVLA. Generally I am 100% supportive of our fine police officers but that was one day I have to conclude there were no murders, stabbings or burglaries in Nottingham... so I quickly fitted some period style reflectives... I think correct for period plates look best. Especially since every 'erbert in a 1990s Mini now has cheapo black plates on them and so many 70s/80s cars have nasty modern New Charles Wright plates on... IMO that Alfa in the OP would look best with a set of 1970s Speedline or similar plates on it.

I got pulled in my old 1968 A35 van as the black and silver plates could not be seen by the anpr cameras ( the ones they use to tell if you have tax and mot )
he had a very good look at the van but did not find anything up with it. but if you have tints or any other mods they could do you for it

i think they were havin you on, ANPR cameras can see black and silver plates just fine, they can see most colours as it happens, its the font and spacing that mucks them up.

I had black plates on a 1973 Cortina . thought they were legal up to 73 ? No, they are legal if your car was built before December 1972, registration date is irrelevant. Alistair, I think the car looked better on the correct plates, looks more fitting. I have some oldish school plates on my car. I think they're the first generation of Acrylic plates. They don't have cracks etc, but they don't half look dull despite the car residing in a garage for most of its life. Hmmm, some rivetted on letters would look spot on though.

they are OK on cars built on or before 31/12/1972 - not all L reg cars.
if its tax exempt it can have black plates. if its not excempt it can't.
I used to work on a site which had ANPR controlled security gates and they sometimes read the black plates on my Victor and sometimes didn't. I know this because if they failed to read I had to wait for a security guard to open the gate for me manually. They also could not read off-centre plates like ones on the Alfa 156 at all. I presume the ones used for tax enforcement etc. are better than that.
The coppers pulling the A35 over were having a look. Even if the ANPR couldn't read the plate they can manually do it by calling the plate in for a check over the radio...

My local Sainsbury's uses ANPR cameras & a digital screen (saying 'Welcome AB01CDE - 2 hours free parking expires at 10:13' etc) at the entry & exit to remind people that parking is only free for 2 hours. However it can never read my plates (black with rivetted silver letters). Doesn't even recognise that there's a car passing by, but will happily see the modern cars in front & behind me in the queue. The ANPR at the barrier into the underground car park in the complex where I work doesn't like the black & silver plates either.
Given also the Feds' zealousness to prevent the use of black & silver plates on non-eligible cars, I can only assume that their ANPR can't read them easily either.

MY car already has black and silver plates, legally as it is a 72. I just prefer a smaller plate for a cleaner look. This is current - This is the plan, de badged and slightly smaller plate (maybe only I will notice but that is fine by me, especially if it avoids the attention of the Law). I love the size of old Italian plates but I think that would be asking for trouble.
