anyone done it on here or seen it done or whatever? I like anything old and diesel myself, partly due to being able to get free diesel sometimes, and the better fuel economy. But i'd like to see has any member here converted somethin unusual to diesel.
for example i had a diesel opel rekord which used a nissan van engine, and ive seen a 1800 turbodiesel powered ford zephyr, 1800td Capri and a 2.3td vauxhall cresta.
what do you lot think? anyone like the idea? done it? seein it? i know some will hate me for sayin it but that's alright too

I've considered the idea of a diesel in a classic in the past meself.
Was thinking of shoeshorning one into my Chevette before it gave up the ghost. I personally don't believe in taking the innards out of a perfectly good or uncommon car, but certainly the benefits to a more basac classic can be an advantage.

i do know the ones alright, shame there's no pictures but still interesting to hear about it. very strong solid engines those but fook me they do not like to move. drove a dodge/renault horse truck with one for a while and it was about as fast as a glacier. i'd be happy to get 25mph up hills with a full load. damn thing didnt want to rev

A guy in Holland has fitted a VW 1.9TD into an Amazon, and even managed to bolt it up to the Amazon's overdrive gearbox - it needed a special / modified bellhousing though. from what I gather, the conversion worked well.

I've been offered a firenza and did toy with the idea of putting the 1.9td out of the zx in it , not that i aint got anything else to get finished

There's been a few A60s done with Montego diesel engines. There wa a cahp local to me who had put one in an MGB too and worked out all the factory parts you needed so no engieneering was necessary. This is a diesel too I think?

Thats a vauxhall 8v lump isnt it? Yeah, IIRC that Minx has a C20NE GM engine and Carlton 5-speeder combo. I know there's a guy in CO-OC running a Nissan RD28T in an Austin Westminster.....

My dad currently owns a Mk10 Jag with a 2.7 Nissan diesel engine in as well as a xj40 Jag with a Nissan 2.7 turbo diesel engine in it, and has also owned numerous diesel classic cars including a Daimler sovereign 420 with another 2.7 Nissan diesel, Rover p5b with a tdi discovery engine, a Rover p5 with a Mazda Perkins diesel, Rolls Royce silver shadow 1 with a 5.7 V8 olds diesel, and another rover p5 with a Mk2 transit diesel lump in it as well as a few others that I can't quite think of at the moment.

Best one I've seen is an Avenger Estate with a 1.7TD Isuzu out of a nineties Astra. They went pretty well, you could get 35mpg driven hard and about 110mph in the original car!

That MGBTD is ace, I bet it's just as agricultural as a 'B' series, just with more grunt

I'd love to build a dolomite with a Puegeot XUD turbo diesel engine hooked up to a LDV pilot gearbox. They used the pug engine so it will bolt together nicely.

In my old town of Bedford and still on the classic scene is a Humber Sceptre that was supplied new with a Perkins lump in it. The old guy who owns it i beleive is the original owner who ordered it. I suspect the biggest problem with many diesel engines is they are heavy old things. I dunno what the newer generation ones are like (power to weight ratio etc)that are being fitted to the smaller cars.

I've seen a Roller for sale with a six-cylinder Volvo diesel in it, a P6 with the Montego perkins lump and my personal fave - a Citroen Traction Avant with a bx turbo diesel and a Skoda Estelle gearbox!

I couldn't do a classic with a 'period' (you know what I mean - bag of nails jobbie) diesel in it. It'd have to be a relatively modern one, with some decent power, economy and torque to make it worthwhile. Nothing agricultural. One day I'll do a C4 Corvette with the twin-turbo V6 CRD from the 300C in it Light car, great aero, strong engine, tall gearing, high MPG!
