I've had my MG about 15 months now and it has let me down 2 times, After 2 months the diff became very noisy and needed replacing and then the replacement second hand diff decided to lock up 2 months later whilst doing 40mph causing the back wheels to lock up which was quite a scary experience so i'm on my 3rd diff........... But apart from the diff issues i've not had any problems and think i've just been unlucky as people keep telling 'those diffs are bomb proof'.... It decided to be a pain before my last trackday though, I finished work early and decided i'd get it on the ramps and have look underneath and make sure everything was in order for the evening ahead at Donington, all was fine until i went to move it and i turned the key and nothing happened, not a noise..... At this point i was confused as i had used it in the morning no problem and it had ony been on the ramps for about an hour and i had not messed with anything..... so i thought the battery must must be dead somehow? so got some jump leads on it and still nothing no dash lights or anything.... At this point i was ranting and raving about selling the curse word thing and i had started slamming the doors throwing tools about (you know how it is ) as this was about 2 hours before trackday that i had already paid for..... So i then thought if there is no power it must be an earth problem so i disconnected the battery and the connections were nice and clean so this wasn't the problem, or so i thought but i put them back on and bingo started first time ;D and we were now friends again and ive no problems since Never really understood what caused the problem.... How reliable has your retro ride been and has it ever let you down when you really needed it?

I have to say that my current ride, has served 9,000 miles since March with absolutely no problems at all - fuel consumption has been constant at around 35mpg, I've pushed the thing up to 95mph and starts on the button everyday. Get yourself a Japanese car!

My escorts been pretty fault free for the last 18months. Failed to start on morning but it was just a duff condenser. Only major problem was when the old engine snapped a valvespring! drove it about 20miles before i could take the rockercover off and find what the funny tinkling sound was Was quite lucky it didnt drop a valve i guess. Its got some intermittent and minor problems such as a misfire in the wet, wobbly brakes (i guessed warped discs but they seme ok when mesured!) Oh and the door hinge parting company with the door the otherday I suppose i have replaced nearly all the mechanical parts with new/uprated bits tho so that must have helped.

2 years, 5000 miles, it's 27 years old. Not a problem so far! (besides the odd bit of MOT work or consumables Did 550 mile round trip in 12-13 hours to Wales via Coventry, Wovlerhampton and Kidderminster two weeks back, not a hiccup. Managed to cruise at 80 comfortably on the m-way too, buffeting got to me on flat bits though.....raced a really sheddy ol' CRX too, great fun (in a wannabe racer inside the legal limits style )

The Volvo's not exactly old, 1987 registered, but it works perfectly. To my surprise, it even passed it's MOT last week needing nothing but 2 tyres. I've just been to the Nats in Suffolk, friving from Kent, steady 80 all the way, not a murmur or hiccup. Nice.

my last benz (w123 estate) nearly 30k in three years.only probs were the rear suspension collapsing due to a bust pipe and a rotten bottom hydraulic cylinder parting from the wishbone.failed to start once due to extreme cold. the best breakage was the cv joint at the diff end of the rear drive shaft collapsing.with it like this i drove to newquay and back and allover while i was there (almost 1200 miles in all) and it still kept going! sad to see her go when she was written off after a dumb woman pulled out in front of me on a round a bout. the replacement has been ok so far, apart from a water leak. all of my back catalogue of about 20 retros have been pretty much ok too, even though they all got used as dailies. i tend to give them a fair bit of use too, doing 250 miles a week going to work and back.all the people i work with think I'm mad. but they would, cos they are all the sheep who follow trends and do what they're told to do.

My Amazon has been very reliable (touch wood) and even on the rare occasions when it has decided to misbehave, it has still been considerate enough to get me home :-)

My Sleeper has been pretty reliable, although we have changed the engine recently, purely for performance reasons, so far we have done a couple of thousand with then new engine and it's getting better by the day.
The cabby is reliable although in the 3 years i have had it i have only done 6000 miles and it has had a full mechanical rebuild so i would expect it to be so.

my first car, the 1303S, did 18000 miles in a year up and down the motorway and only let me down once - when for some bizarre reason it kept flooding whilst running. got the RAC out to it and he was a bit puzzled, nowhere to plug his laptop in ended up shooting about a litre of petrol out of the exhaust all over his trousers, a bit herbie-esque! second car, 1600 fastback did not break down once. then i went onto watercoolers.... golf driver which i only bought to get to a party, only problem i had was with a vacuum pipe meaning i could only drive it flat out - no problem there then polo g40 - couple of 'moments' with that, it had a random cutting out problem when i fitst bought it, did it a couple of times in heavy traffic then cured itself. then the hall sender went in the middle of the night - totally dead engine. finally it munched a supercharger which does NOT leave a good noise behind - luckily it was only a borrowed one scirocco - minor issue with the coolant header jizzing it's load all over the place but a £3 fix. all in all then only a problem with the newest (J plate) car, all my proper retros have been fine. compare and contrast to claire's P reg mondeo - 6 goes to get it through an mot, had probably about a grand spend on it in three years just to keep it running.

the carlton has been the sole of reliability apart from sooting up one plug(five min roadside fix) in the 1500 miles ive covered in the three weeks ive had it
the sigma was excellent before i took it of the road to rip it apart.
the golf driver has been a pain in the ass with its battery draining frivolities(turned out to be the starter) but then i realised its done 14000 miles since january!!! so its beeen okay really.
the way i see it, when u bye your retro motor, spend a hundred quid onit doing a bloody good service and thatll see you right. mantainence is everything and modern car drivers don't understand this. i get it all the time, "why don't u bye a nice reliable modern car" i say "my cars cost me to bye what yours cost u everymonth. and i own mine now where youll never actually own yours"

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Have the 1971 Fiat 850 5 years and it has broken the bolts holding on the dynamo twice and thats it. Cable tied the dynamo back into place both times and got home. Wouldn't trust the bloody Triumph 2000 to drive from the garage to the front gate...B*ST*RD CAR

The 960's absolutely reliable, other than a sticky fuel guage but I know it does 350 miles on a tank with a heavy right foot so I now when to fill it so it's not a problem. The Imp's a tempermental little swine, but they all are, you get used to it!!

Well, my car is now a collection of spares, but my girlfriends mini is doing quite well. It's had a wheel cylinder go, but there's nothing unusual in that. It's just been for it's MOT and all it fialed on was a knackered CV boot, frayed handbrake cable, the light in the fog light switch not working and the hazard lights packed up in the middle of the test. Only cost £102 to get fixed, not bad for a 20 year old car
