I'm selling the Triumph 2000 MK1 (B@st@rd Strombergs, worn gearbox selectors etc etc). I want to replace with a car that is A. Over 30 years old( we have rolling exemption over here) B. Capable of towing the Fiat 850 on a transporter C. Has power steering D. Rear seat belts would be a bonus E. Easy to get bits for
Current favourite would be a Merc W116 350SEL Triumph 2500S and Granada MK1 are also on the list Any other ideas or opinions on above?

RANGE ROVER
(I think that will tick all boxes. Even if it doesn't you can pillage later models for PAS, belts etc...)

over 30 years old with PAS, i think you're definately looking at a merc... mk1 grannies didn't have it did they? mercs seem easy to get parts for too, worst case you can always phone a dealer! can't do that for many 30 year old motors.

Toyota CROWN? (although parts may be a problem).
Or really any of those big estates off Yahoo Japan, plus being Irish you can stick it on a boat with the 1000 AE86s that get imported everyday.
More realistically my first thought was another 2000/2500.

Range Rovers make lousy towing cars, both the RAC and AA tried them out without success. Not sure what the exact reason was, but its something to ask them when you conk out next.
Reliability is the key so maybe a Volvo 145 or Opel Rekord.
I'd go for the CROWN personally! They're definately out there.

If not too much towing a 3 door range rover in some pea green or some such would be way cool.

Old citroens are good towers. Others here can advise you better, but the suspension is both the + and the -. Great for towing if it's A+ etc etc

Rover P6. V8 for full effect or 2.2 for a little bit more economy. Power steering, auto option. Leather interiors. Great tow car with massive boot.

P5B definitely. Dunno if they had power steering though. Got a Rover V8 so bits are nice and easy. Tows fiat 850s in its sleep. Possibly rear seatbelts. Comfier than a comfortable thing that is very comfortable. Sorted.

What about a Volvo Amazon, I'm not sure that you'd find one with power steering but they are safe, relaible family cars, you'll be able to tow your Fiat and its trailer with ease, I think they're all over 30 years old, and not only do Volvo still make a number of the bits for it, but Volvos parts are pretty modular, you could easily upgrade an Amazon to use a number of later mechanical components from a 240, 740 or 940, even the very latest 940 turbo engines are based on the Amazon's B18 engine so they'll go in there with surpisingly little work, although it'd be worth checking if the 940 sump cleared the Amazon crossmemeber, and the later Bosch injected head cleared the bonnet etc, but I reckon you'd have no problems there!

Range Rover if you don't mind keeping a 3.5 V8 topped up with juice I've driven hundreds of the curse word things including the later ones and most series of Land Rover. They are obviously torquey because of the V8 and they have retro appeal, they tow bloody well too. Most 30+ year old examples are rotten though!

I second the Amazon, which fits all criteria except power steering, but as long as you keep the original (large) steering wheel, this shouldn't be a problem (my Amazon is my everyday car). However, if you do decide on an Amazon, make sure it is the twin carb and overdrive version!
