I really like these, they are right up my street. I have searched high and low on the interweb for someone else who is a fan but turned up NOWT. I used to drive a 1.5SXi one all over, and it was competent in all areas but I must say, not mega outstanding in any. It defo was 'nearly there' though. It went well, felt unburstable, was very economical, and I reckon, one of the best-looking small hatches of the 80's. They have a Fiat Strada floorpan so it must be possible to sharpen up the handling. Also i saw a pic of a fiat twin-cam engined one in a mag which was cool, but I wonder how tuneable the 'system porsche' standard offering is? anyway what are our views? It is one car that i would happily strip the trim out of, bosh a cage in, and rag it round a track. and whats this? its got ibiza doors.

I reckon a 1500cc one could be a laugh.
Those 0.9 povo spec ones are best avoided though. YUK! I assume they've all rotted away to small piles of brown stuff by now...

yeah, i've never tried a 0.9 one, i imagine its fugging awful. There is a 1.7 version available on the continent, but i've not noticed them for sale outside germany.

Totally and utterly forgotten about them until seeing this thread! Now I'm starting to recall those nasty late-80's Seat ads too... oh the pain! Not entirely sure about them really. A bit nondescript... not my cup of tea really. But it might be a lark to put something silly under the bonnet and see what happens... ;D

Apparently they offered to do Porsche some in return. "System Seat" for the Boxster. They didn't get back to them though

yeah, yeah, yeah! The engine and gearbox was done entirely by Porsche! hence the massive and rather tw*tty 'system porsche' stickers in the back window. Giugiaro did the styling and fiat supplied the floorpan.

Oh, and it's pronounced "Eye Beefer". That's how the cultured types that frequent the island pronounce it.

Don't see too many of those around now! I reckon they'd respond well to the traditional "euro" treatment...

They can be quite a laugh. I bought one for my sister a few years ago and much better car than an equivalent fiesta. 1.1 engine five speed on a g plate. I don't know what you can do with the handling though. Leaf sprung rear suspension. That in itself aint necessarily such a bad thing but single transverse leaf leaves a lot to be desired ;D. Could be quite quite scary with a valver in it. ;D

Actually, wasn't the body a Guigaro design for the mkII Golf that wasn't used by VW originally, and altered a little for Seat? I think yer right there Rev - rings a feint bell. Also, the Nissan Micra was a rejected Giugiaro design for the Fiat Uno. I quite like the crapness of the Seat Malaga myself like.

I have fond memories of those. I learnt to drive in a 1200cc K plate one. Quite nippy from what I remember, a laugh to drive

I've got a thing for these as well, so you're not alone MrB. Remind me a bit of Polo Coupes.
I actually saw one hurtling along just round the corner from me the other day. I tried to chase it down, but I was on my BMX!
