So, as stated the other day, I've bought this.... TAH DAHHhhHhHHhhHhhhH! It's a boggo standardo 280E with 100k on it. I gave £500 for it, which ain;t bad considering that it's still sporting mot until April. The plans are being held close to my chest, but befor I get carried away with them I do have a few things to sort: It's doing a mean Audi Quattro impression at the mo as one (unknown) cylinder has decided to stop playing ball. I need to fix the leccy windows as they too have stopped playing niceley. After that, the plans will commence. There will be drop in height, and a colour 'modification' as it won't be a full change, so sit tight. In the meantime, here's a teaser as I've just bought these, and yes, the hubcaps will be going in the bin or on my garage wall! Chris

Thats a lovely old bus you've got there, I love these old Merc's.
My mate had one of these that had racked up somewhere in the region of 340,000 miles during its lifetime. He sold it on to a member on here. Truly legendary build quality.

Very classy machine, got that 'never in fashion, never out of fashion' kinda timeless thing going on, yours loks pretty unmessed-with too.

Ooh yes, W123 action! Agreed with bo11ox about the timelessness of these things - I could definitely see myself in one of 300D variety. What's wrong with the current wheels by the way? They suit it.

Looks pretty tidy It's bone stock, it even still has the upgraded from dealer Blaupunkt stereo....til I rip it out. Is this a spindle mount type? If so, I'd be interested in buying it

Cheap score, is nice! Make sure you dress up as a late 70s Arab sheikh once you're rolling.

Well, I've just spent £101.70something on it's first, but not most enjoyable addition.... *generic picture alert* *bites tounge in a bid to avoid a rant about old cars and tax prices...ahem.*

I'll get that oul' blaupunkt stereo out of your hands, and all I'll charge you for it is the postage. I can't do you a better deal than that, I'm afraid.

Right, I've moved on from it's brief moment of being for sale as I like it too much, and also because the job I was offered with a car has fallen through. Joy of joys. So, I have ordered from Ken at KenzBenz (Thanks Matt) a new grille, a new set of HT leads and a new fan control unit as mine is monkeyed to the highest order. The HT leads are key as it's running really badly at the moment. I know it's leads because it does run on six from time to time. If it still does it with the new leads I guess it'll mean changing the rest of the ignition gear. Joy. So, by tomorrow it should be running smooth, looking better all with the added bonus of a functioning internal fan. Oh, and once it's running smoothly again I'm going to have the exhaust fixed so it's a little quieter than a John Deere tractor. Next week she'll be going a tad lower (thanks for the info TCC ) because... Until then, have a pic.

IMO, that star in the grille is awful... I would have removed it and put the stock trim back in place. But that's just my opinion.

Well, thanks to Ken at Kenzbenz (thanks again Mr. Jones) I have some new goodies for the 280. Firstly, a new set of HT leads. To buy them new was silly money, and when you take into account the fact that I only need one, I just couldn't justify the cost. So, one new, erm, second hand HT lead later and we're running on six again...and kicking out a lot of smoke, but as with last time, it'll just be the crud built up in the dud cylinder being burnt off. It'll clear up after a run around the block. Next, a control unit for the fan. Mine, as you can see, is well and truly buggered. Annoyingly though, it looks be a little more involved than I had first anticiapted, and as I'm looking after my daughter right now, I'll have to leave it until later. Hmmm, mullered... Alas, it's replacemet... Next is the best one; a new, less twatish grille. I basically got this for free, but it shows. The chrome is shagged and the plastic is pitted, so, in true RR style I'll be painting the whole thing black. It won't look brilliant, but it will look better! It's drying as we type, I'll cuck up some pictures in a bit. Even though its in poor condition it's still much better... Stop! Thief! More later! ;D

The chrome strips are (were!) available seperately from the dealer. I got a set for my W126 when I resprayed it. Quite cheap too if I remember. Paint the plastic bit grey as the factory did and it will look as good as new!

A common mod at least in sweden is to put twice as many chrome strips as stock, and at least I think that it looks good.
