I recieved an email entitled "thanks" for GavinJ earlier which contained a nasty virus. Thankfully it didn't get past my security.... but be warned - there may be nasties out there and messages from fellow R-R's may not be what you expect!!!!

tcc - I had a similar thing a while back. Downloaded SpyBot (free) which seems to have sorted the problem (try . They have a half decent firewall thingy on there too which stops those dialer viruses connecting to all kinds of curse word sites. Sygate Personal Firewall. It's all free. I tend to whack as many security programs on my computer as possible so if it gets past one program it gets found by another

If your going to Email some one on here it might be best to PM them first and let them know. Maybe use a password in the subject so they know they can open it.

Bad luck all. I'm smug, being a Mac owner. No viruses! Ever!

Just because I caned you to the ground with e-mail cuss-age yesterday. And while we're on the subject of viruses... I heard you caught galloping knob-rot from your bum-love sessions in public toilets. And don't even get me started on yo' virus-riddled momma. ;D (no shortage of maturity in this office!)

Bad luck all. I'm smug, being a Mac owner. No viruses! Ever! Not entirely true I could compile a buffer-overrun exploit that'd knock MacOS 8, 9 and X onto it's back. To all those who have problems with malware: www.doxdesk.comIf you use Internet Explorer, there is a parasite check here (works on v5.5 and above). IF you haven't already, download the latest release of Firefox; it doesn't have anywhere near the amount of exploitable zones as Internet Explorer (Active X...what a joke...) To clean up, use the following: Ad-AwareSpybot Search&DestroyCWShredderMicrosoft AntispywareBest thing to do is not open ANY email that you are not expecting. If you are using Outlook or a similar email tool, don't use the preview pane. *n

That sounds like the istbar spyware I had recently...I used various utilities to get rid of it, (ad-aware and Norton did a reasonable job, but it didn't quite kill it ) and also did a bit of manual file searching and deleting. Do what you can and then stop using Internet Explorer (assuming you do now, that is). Scrapingscrap set me up with a copy of Mozilla Firefox, which doesn't fall victim to spyware and virus attacks in the same way (IE's popularity means it becomes the target of the computer-wreckers).

Hehehe...I wouldn't, I'm not feeling that malicious but it is a common fallacy that MacOS and various *nix variants (Unix, Linux, BSD et cetera) are 'immune' to viruses and malicious software.
The basics of it are that the vast majority of computer users the world over are using a variant of Windows. This means that the individuals who write malware and so on will concentrate their efforts on the largest market.
If everyone used Linux, Linux would have as much problems exposed and exploited as Windows does.

[Edit: To keel over a Mac, write a program that keeps multiplying numbers by themselves exponentionally, you will eventually get to the point where the Mac goes 'oh...for f*cks' sake' and keels over. It is a lot harder on MacOS X but in the days of 8 it coud be done in a few minutes...]

That sounds about right - as far as I can make out, all the viruses etc seem to be trained to hate Microsoft.....
