I know, most are probably laughing at the mere mention that a 405 might be retro, but they're getting on abit now arnt they? Ive just bought one because it was silly cheap but has a full service history and is incredibly clean, then i found out the front seats are the same as a 205GTi which was nice, i wondered why it was so comfy! Is called a 405 'Quasar', its nicely fitted out but is still relitavly no frills and still has wind up windows. Blah blah blah...... So, are they retro, or retro-ish, or am i barking up the wrong tree? Either way, show me some hot ones!

I'd say so. any car worth driving 1000 odd miles overland to get spares for is by definition RR material. (shame they are such pigs to work on though, lol)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Getting to be a retro, but a damn fine car. I've had 5 of them and they've all been good 'uns

Cheers peeps, good to see some positives on the ol' thing, I'm really starting to like it now, it uses sod all fuel and is a peach to drive, its a N reg so it feels modern but drives like an older car, if that makes sence. Ive so far found a strut brace for it, i don't think ill ever need it but its there if i do, and it is getting lowered along with some nice alloys, i know what ive got my eye on but its at risk of looking slightly chav. I used to go watch these in action in the BTCC, so theres bound to be a touch of inspiration from that.
Where are all the hot ones!!

Where are all the hot ones!! Chopped up and keeping our 205's going! They have quite a following on www.psooc.com If you can find a good Mi16 they are a really nice handling car.

Yeah, I'd agree with that...they've been around for 20+ years now (Peugeot UK borrowed my dad's 403 for the launch at the NEC in late '87.....), fantastic ride and handling, build quality got progressively better as well.
Quasar was one up from the povo-spec 'Style' IIRC.
Estate would make a cracking alternative surf-bus to the VW Pi55rat IMO.

They have a nice smooth style to them too and with the pointy nose and slanty pointed Peugeot lights they'd respond well to a bit of slamming and some steelies or even some nice (not chav) wheels.
OK so most of the Mi16's have had their engines shoved into 205's but the standard 1.9 motor can be made to go well and the diesels tend to forget what petrol stations are.

Another 405 fan here Swmbo's parents have one out in NZ. Very nice to drive and performs well. In fact, I like them enough that they are one of the few modern cars that I'd consider (along with a Volvo 7 or 9 series)

I'm going to be controversial and say no. I love them - very stylish whether saloon or estate - but they just don't do it for me yet. I know that makes no sense at all because I adore late Sierra Sapphires - the facelift ones from 1990/1991! Meh. Since when did anything make sense?
