I've just got these HS8 SU's. I haven't got a clue about SU's, particuly how the linkage works for both the throttle and the choke. Is the choke the plunger set-up on the bottom? Can I use any linkage or does it have to be specific for HS8's? Is the two different linkages. One for throttle, one for choke? Pictures??

Its Obviously SU season! These for your A I presume? Difficult to describe the linkages without showing you.
The throttle linkage is a rod that runs between the ends of the two throttle spindles. An arm on each end of this locates in a plate on the end of the spindle to rotate them - can just see this plate I think on the carb on the right of your photo. Might be missing from the left carb?
The choke mechanism does two things. The cable is attached to and pulls up on a cam. For the initial stage of the cams movement it pushes against an adjustable screw that is part of the throttle linkage, opening the throttle slightly. Then as the choke is pulled out further it operates the lever that pushes the jet (at the base of the carb) away from the carb, richening the mixture. Again the carbs are joined by a spindle between the choke cams so both do the same thing (when adjusted right)

Thanks Seth, thats the best explaination I've heard. It kinda makes sense now. This is the plan for them... They're a lot bigger than whats currently on there. Looking for more power, better drivability and better fuel consumption! (Aren't we all!?!) Having a quick mock up it seems they are not going to fit behind the bonnet! Mmmm.... Racy...

Lets clear up car terms: "Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence. "Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

HS8s are big ones. You don't really want to put them on an engine making less than 200 horse, or they will be just too oversized.

I got given these inchand 3 quarters off a triumph so I cleaned them rebuilt them amd bunged them on a pinto ,went very well and sounded ace in a suckysuckylongtime way:) Great pics. Is the manifold fabbed from exhaust sections?

Didn't Rover P6 V8s have a pair of HS8's, or HD8's... can't remember. But that makes nearer 150 BHP. So I'd think they'd be perfect for your A.

No, the rv8 had a pair of HS6s, which is about right for engines starting from 120 horsepower, up to 200.
The 8s really are rare animals. They saw use mostly on jaguars I think.

Wow, you are right.. that is MADLY overcarbed. A pair of hs2s will flow enough for a mere 80 horsepower!
I have absolutely no idea why they chose blatantly incorrect carbs there. The B16 lump used a pair of HS4s, for exactly the same power output.
The nice thing about an SU, is it doesn't mind being overcarbed too much, since the venturi is adjustable. There is still no excuse for it though, since getting SUs in the right size is hardly difficult. And it will kill your throttle response. I suppose volvo didn't care about that..
