Hello everyone,
I've pulled the trigger and put the new layout live. This will no doubt be met with some gnashing of teeth at the change, it is always thus. Before you immediately get mad at me, please give it a couple of days, unless it is immediately unusable.
I'm aware there are a whole bunch of little graphical glitches that need sorting, spacing here and there, font sizes on some buttons.
I'm also aware there are going to be issues for people I'm unaware of, certain devices, screen sizes, browsers, may behave very differently to what I'm expecting to happen.
With that in mind:
If you have an issue where the whole thing is unusable, please report it here, I need to know the device, the screen resolution if you know it, and the browser you are using. Screen shots of the problem would be useful.
If you have the same issue as someone else, please just like that comment rather than post a new reply (assuming like is not broken ).
BIG CHANGE:
Other than the menu moving, more space for text/images in threads and a few other bits and pieces, the BIG change is the editor. I've not found anyone else on Proboards doing what I'm doing here, so I'm a bit out on a limb, however this editor should be much better than the previous one, particularly given the Image Uploader, which is now the little paperclip icon above (I'll change that in due course to be more obvious). It will upload multiple images, in broadly the order you select them (I've had a couple of times where the first selected image appears last, but that seems to be a Windows thing rather than an uploader thing), which should make build threads and photo reports from events easier to do.
One area where it isn't as good (currently) is hotlinking images from other sites. You will still need to put in the old fashion squarebracket img tag around the img url. I have a plan to automatically take pasted img urls, upload them to RR Imgages and replace the url. However this is a little way off as there is other stuff in the queue before hand.
KNOWN ISSUES:
At certain resolutions/devices the Participated box does weird things to the view. This is going to need a deeper re-styling and was holding up all the rest of the go-live, so we'll live with it for a little bit and get it resolved as soon as I can.
Quoting older posts does weird things when there is a quote within a quote. I'm working on a fix for this, but it is proving a tricky one, anyone with javascript skills that is available to help would be appreciated, I'll work it out eventually though. Just be aware of it at the moment.
Styling on new editor I'm 90% sure not all the styling options at the top of this new editor translate and get retained when the post goes in to the forum software. I need to do an exhaustive test and remove what isn't used. I'm just running from the defaults at the moment.
Mobile 'Desktop View This is one of the main reasons I've been moving all this stuff around and working on implementing this new editor and all that good stuff. However it still has some font size issues and there is a 'known bug' in the editor when you click back to the middle of words to re-edit them, starts moving the cursor around and causing mayhem in your replies. I'm hoping there is a fix for it, or I'll have to word a little note under the edit box on mobile. Feel free to hit the Desktop view in mobile and experience it, feedback any major issues you have.
IF IT IS TOTALLY UNUSABLE:
If you really really can't get on with this layout because it is fundamentally broken for you, you can go into your profile, Edit Profile, go to Settings and in themes you can still select OLD RR Layout. This will eventually disappear when I'm satisfied the new layout is correct.
On that note eventually, the Desktop view for mobile will be the only view for mobile. I'm hoping sooner rather than later on that too, so please try if, report issues and we'll get it tip top. There is nothing I can't fix, I just need to know about it.
Thanks in advance for your patience with this transition phase. We've done it a few times over the last 19 years, and it is rarely as smooth as I'd like, but rarely as painful as I anticipate.
Good luck.
