EV's are going to change the automotive landscape, without major government bungs like the Chinese manufacturers get any practical EV with a decent range has got to be the thick end of 40 grand to make a profit.
They haven't really used the Land rover brand in years and I guess the simple truth is people are preparred to pay more for something with Range Rover stuck on the front.

It's a shame but probably inevitable, people who buy Evoques (or new Defenders) don't know, or care, about the history.

Marketing & tech come first now, with quality, longevity, and reliability are in double figures. They only want the car to get past it's warranty then it's junk to them. Electric vehicles are not going to happen, or they will slowly die out. How will everyone without driveways charge them? Streetlights with huge cables with various different connectors on them going to each and every car in the street? We honestly think that the UK government is going to come up with a national charging network? Maybe someone can get them to run on AA's, along with a machine to turn the car upside down. I am also totally facepalmed by the the way things are going too.

Personally I think the name, and the company, and all the cars they produced, should have been dropped 30 years ago. Into the sea.

You're probably missing the good old days when engines needed a rebuild around 60k miles and cars needed welding within 5 years of leaving the factory?

In certain aspects, yes - because at least a lot more cars back then could be fixed at home without needing special tools. 60k back then was considered normal for some. A lot of drivers back then would learn how to reseat valves, replace pistons, bearings, all in their garage. Welding at home was more popular too, but then so was bodging with newspaper/filler etc so not every aspect.

That DIY maintenance seems less popular than it used to be has of course nothing to do with the build quality of today's cars. As long as we keep telling each other that modern cars (or domestic appliances, computers, etc.) can't be fixed at home we're keeping the industry's dream alive.

BYD have announced a new car this week. The Seagull. 300 mile range, 5 sec 0-60. $11,400 (This is one of the reasons Musk lost so much money this week. Tesla costs $33k).

The history of building cars that break down a lot, or fail in weird ways. Still bought one. I've owned it a year and a half. I have regrets. I shall be purchasing a replacement soon. Land Rover, branded or non-branded need to head to the dustbin of history with their terrible products.

As Hotwire eluded to, it’s probably dropping the name because it doesn’t want customers associating it with curse word vehicles. Bit like when they changed Windscale nuclear power station to Sellafield after an explosion, in the hope people disassociate the two being connected.

My wife loves old Defenders. They make lackluster products and have done for years. Which is why all the farmers where I live have Toyotas instead. So yes they can get in the sea, and unlike a Toyota Hilux they won't run after.

Her dad had a new 110 county (think it was before the defender name happened) and has rose tinted glasses. I’ve driven a few on a friends farm I used to work on, he has a weird early 110 (not split screen) pickup that has had body conversion to a king cab (not double cab just small doors behind front doors and no seat in back as not big enough) that has a Mazda truck engine, and a series 1 lwb safari station wagon with a v8. He also had a series 3 88” safari that I replaced and re sprayed the front end on. I’ve told my wife as much as she likes them she hasn’t driven one. A friend of ours runs a business repairing and selling land rovers who I think is fairly well known in the area. He says the same thing, that she won’t like them if she drives one. Last time I spoke with him was after hearing a radio phone in about the sudden rise in people finding their defenders devoid of many body parts when going to get in them in the morning as a lot of panels are easily unbolted from outside the vehicle. He said at the time that he had heard of two or three that happened in that week alone and it was a massive problem.

Are the new ones that bad? Surely the bankers, footballers and wannabe badmans would get sick of their 100k+ Range Rovers if they were curse word? Or is it just the entry level ones? Or does the status symbol outweigh all that? Or are they all going over to G Wagens?
I know that is a lot of questions, but as a bland, modern, lifestyle box, are they awful? This is from someone who considers independent suspension on the front of a 4x4 modern...
I had a series 3 and loved it, would love another some day. The old Defender, while iconic, was a bit rubbish if it rained, as the only place to put your right elbow was out of the window. Just like a Series 1. Which I suppose is why we love/hate/idolise them.

Which I suppose is why we love/hate/idolise them. We've stopped repairing them. The post engine repair repairs to actually make them work enough for the customer to collect/pay for them were getting beyond a joke, both in time and cost. We can usually give a rough quote within a grand of what repairing a vehicle will cost. We did a run of Disco 3's that various people had bought as spares/repairs none runners where the cost of actually making it into a working (MOT-able) vehicle was 3 times more than the costs of the engine repairs and fitting. When the swapped to the Ingenium engines in the newer shape ones we had them coming in for engines at <6months old. We offer a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty with all our reconditioned engines. If JLR can't get them through a 3 year or whatever warranty without blowing up then the chances of us in a independent garage managing to are slim, so we don't go near them any more.

And I used to think the Opel 20LET engine had a bad rep for being a bit grenadey - those Ingenium engines are in another league for shitting themselves
