Whilst visiting a customer over the last 10 years I have watched a car on his drive very slowly deteriorate, and I mentioned something about it now being very rare these days. "It's yours if you want it - call it payment for today!" - Oh, twist my arm! A 30,000 mile automatic 1.4 citroen saxo! It's a bit tatty, horrible 3 speed auto, but it's clean inside and drives really well. Sills are solid and no holes anywhere. Alloys have disintergrated and need replacement. Just trying to get Lexia/Actia diagnostics to work on a laptop as none of my tools connect, as it's not quite odb2. It's easy to lower these but it's no boy racer and an auto so won't be customising it, but other than that I don't quite know what to do with it! Never considered these a classic, but there are only 200 left in the UK - These things were everywhere once. Anyone else been given a surprise car?

Haven't seen a Saxo for ages, but often seem to see quite a few 106s. Whilst the Saxo had the more modern dash than its 106 sibling, I always found the Citroen exterior restyling to be very awkward, especially the rear numberplate position.
I currently use a 106 1.1 manual as my daily hack to commute over the South Downs, which it does very well, especially on poorly surfaced country lanes and so can imagine that a 1.4 would go rather well, but due to the need to work the gears a bit (ratios are ideal for the engine though), a 3 speed auto in one of those sounds a bit grim, even with the extra power. Is that 200 1.4 autos left, or Saxos in total?

how many left states 280 auto 1.4i desire in the UK
3,500 of the 1.1 left
still pretty low
Now you have mentioned the rear number plate - It really isn't right! Can't unsee it now! It drives like you would expect - slow and steady.
Didn't even think the 106 was the peugeot equivalent, but then the Citroen C1 is a toyota aygo and I only realised when opening the bonnet and seeing TOYOTA on the manifold.

I had a mk2 VTS many moons ago, couldn't fault it really, it had a radiator early on due to a rotten end tank but other than that 100% reliable.

"Anyone else been given a surprise car?" Yes. Last Christmas my youngest son (then aged 15) acquired a Pulsar from friends of the family. They just gave him the key and said take it so we did. It even had 3/4 of a tank of petrol left in it. I've been dailying it for the last six months but he's got his licence now so I'll have to get my own car fixed and give it back. Pic of proud young man collecting his first car.

I went to look at one about 13 years ago when my daughter was coming up for her driving test. It was a manual which drove fine but, by god, it felt like it was made of tin foil and the doors didn't shut with a thud but more of clang, like dropping an empty coke can onto a hard floor. I ended up buying a 92 Toyota Starlet that, by comparison, was built of of granite and had an electric sunroof that had an action that wouldn't have been out of place on a Bentley. As a curio, however, the Saxo is worthy.

I think the airbags were designed to try and save the car rather than the occupants! - Whilst jacking it up the pressure was so low in comparison to a 9000 I thought the jack had broke - felt like if I did it quick enough it'd fall on it's side

I've always assumed that the airbag on a 106 / Saxo is purely to aid identification of the driver in the event of hitting anything. Given the structure of the car, it's of little use for anything else...

Everything ok for MOT, but before I take it, the dashboard needs to come out - fuel, revs, temp all dead. Very popular fault with citroens at the time.
Usual battery disconnect trick doesn't help - Steering wheel main bolt is about the same size as a number plate bolt on the 9000 - odd choice. They are not exactly an easy part to track down so I hope I can find something online about repairing rather than replacing, plus the mileage is possibly it's best point which I would like to keep at 30k

“Anyone else been given a free car?” Yea, it was a total pile and needed everything. It gave my oldest daughter a chance to go through a bunch of diagnostics with me and clean and do paint correction as practice though

I actually quite like these, they were fairly new when I was learning to drive but I found the pedal box too small in the manual so I went for the clio instead.
I prefer the more facelift cars myself, I've driven the auto ore facelift and quite liked it. Easiest town car ever. Alas the ex drove it and that did for it....
