Hey AmazonSprite, I reckon that you've got a 'sleeper'. Looks stock, even tatty, but has more poke than expected. Mine's just an in progress mess!! On second thoughts, 'sleeper' is probobly a better description than 'rat', although I quite like the sound of 'rat/sleeper' It definately has the element of surprise (helped by it being very tatty), especially at the traffic lights, and also even at motorway cruising speeds (loads of torque, so motorway hills are barely acknowledged) ;D As for 'in progress mess', sounds like your's is a 'rolling restoration'. Sounds much better, especially to those who aren't interested in cars.

From the aircooled Vdub scene: I think you could translate these "styles" to other makes, i.e. 100% stock restoration with the addition of period accessories and slammed suspension is reminiscent of "Resto-Cal" in the VW world? Alex Not so sure about that. Presumably the "Cal" bit refers to California? In which case we are talking a particular style of Beetle that was/is popular in California? And Resto-Cal would be a look that was popular there a long time ago? So if we take a car that was never popular, or even available in California how can we apply a Cal-Look or Resto-Cal look to it? Presumably what we would be trying to make another car look like a Californian interpretation of a VW Beetle or, perhaps, Bug. Now the way I like to build cars is purposeful, stripped out, tuned up and with sorted suspension. How would you describe that? I don't try to make the car look like anything in particular - the way it looks is always an accident. Accident-Look?

That's not far off how my Imp's going to look, I'm basically restoring a rally car, reshelling it using what's just now my daily driver, so the look will end up being far more incidental than deliberate, but it just happens that I like cars to look like that, cars that weren't designed specifically to look nice, ie but end up looking great, I mean the cage and buckets are practical but look great, and I plan on putting flared arches on it not because it looks nice, but because the wheels stick out of the arches a bit, and rub the inner arches at the front a little when the steering's on full lock, so I'm putting spacers on to widen the track and put the wheels out away from the arches, but flared arches make Imps look good as well, so that's another benefit.

With Southern California in particular being the hot bed of world car culture, certain styles of modification originated there, so the "Cal" bit refers to the origin of the style, not the style itself, the fact that the theme of "Resto-Cal" for example could be translated to many different makes/models/era's of cars means that yes, the origin of the style is US based, it just happens to have been "done" to classic Brit/Euro metal. Take a look at the UK Custom Car/Hot Rod scene for example, the majority of metal is UK/Euro based, but the US influence has been applied to these cars successfully, and people seem happy to call there Moggy's with V8's and Roof high superchargers Hot Rods etc, it does'nt bother them about the origins of the look "back in time" As for your car, stripped out street cars that hold their own on the street and circuit, well make your own name up if you wish!!!!
