Hi. I'm working on something called a Fiberfab Jamaican. It's an American fibreglass body on an Austin Healey 3000 ( pictures to follow) Two things I'm thinking about just now 1) I intend to create an opening bootlid - cut out and bond in hinges etc. My question is, any good ideas for forming a flange that will accept a rubber seal ? A sort of U section I suppose that will have a mall drain built in at the bottom. I just haven't thought a way to make something to mould over. 2) there isn't enough headroom in the car ! Sitting on the floor, my head brushes the roof. I will be using a fibreglass seat bolted to the floor which will be as thin as possible under my bum. I can't go down any, cos there's a chassis leg under the seat. I could do a " Gurney bubble " but I really don't want to spoil the lines. Hopefully you will see from the photos. As it's fibreglass, I could cut out and raise the roof I suppose but again, I don't want to spoil the looks Any suggestions / thoughts welcome, especially those that don't involve surgery on me !   |

Always liked these  Regarding headroom, is there no way you can recline the driving position more, to avoid the need to raise the roof? |

Is it a “Chassis leg” under the seat, or an outrigger to the side rail? I’ve dropped the floor on a few of my GRP cars and I just weld a new outrigger on lower down and/or move it back slightly. On the one I’m currently doing, that’ll involve using thicker metal and making the U section narrower.

There just isn't room to recline enough and get a good driving position.
The main longitudinal chassis leg runs right under the seat, and the crossmember that supports the front of the leaf spring is in the way too. It's a tricky one !

The windscreen could stand with being a little more upright, but the back 3/4 view is gorgeous, and would be tricky to keep with a raised roofline.
Can you move the pedal box forward, to get more recline ?

Plan B - space the body 2" off the chassis to give you the room you need, then rework the wheelarches to suit ?

I really don't fancy the idea of hugely reclined seats. I could raise the body on the chassis, but I see nightmares trying to get the wheelarches ( and a lot more ) to work. I may well give that a go before I bond the body to the chassis though. Otherwise it'll be the twin Gurney bubbles.
Still to figure the boot seal fabrication tho. I've had an interesting suggestion involving plastic conduit

Have a look for GRP Pultruded section suppliers to see if you can find some Channels/angles to suit your need for the fab of a boot lip/seal etc. something like; GRP PultrusionsThis would be more effective than trying to tie together plastic conduit and GRP. Where about's are you? The originator of fibrefab sounds a 'character' Warren Goodwin
Goodwin was a former sports-car racer and a keen fisherman, born in 1921 or 1922.
His earlier company, Sports Car Engineering, had manufactured Microplas Mistral bodies under license and sold them as the Spyder. He founded Fiberfab in 1964. In 1967, Goodwin was arrested on suspicion of murder for shooting his 28-year-old second wife, Jamaica. The police said he had found Jamaica with Farbus Kidoo. Goodwin claimed the shooting was accidental. He was charged with the voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. He died in jail on December 26, 1968, of a heart attack. |

I propped the body about 30mm off the chassis today. Looks like it might work, but gives me a whole lot of glassfibring to do
I also discovered something called a " flexible French curve " which may help with my boot flange
