A bit of a reality check but I have recently come to the conclusion that I hate driving, that there is no pleasure in it any more. I live in the SE where it is always busy, unless you go out at 1am, but that has another set of challenges - the drunk/drug drivers! Anyway, I was thinking about cars going from the sublime to the rediculous, but it always came back to the same point that driving in the SE is a miserable experience with maniac van drivers on one hand to old biddy drivers that should have retired from driving years ago, and me stuck somewhere in the middle? Whether I drive a Porsche or a Proton, those people will still be sat on my a$$, or I'll be sat on theirs, so it doesn't matter what I drive as the end experience will be the same. I still love looking at cars, but the nostalgia/heyday of actually driving I think for me stopped at the turn of the millenium with the daily commute, which thankfully I don't do any more and I still hate driving! Anyway, rant over, have a Karmann Ghia convertible which came out when driving would have been fun

I also live in the SE, and deal with a lot of bad driving on the daily.
I’ve personally found a great deal of solace in driving a beat up old Defender that looks like it’s been involved in a large number of homicides.
For some reason people tend to give me a wide berth!
I have to say though, the higher driving position allows me to see just how many people are on their phones while driving and it really drives me mad!

Meh living in Birmingham I find it kind of fun. The rules of the road go totally out of the window. Half the asians driving around got thier licence off a lamp post and the other half think they the biz doing 60 in a 20 in thier dads Audi A3. It becomes more about avoiding the dodderers and forcing the wannabe be racers into a situation they cant get themselves out of than a drive home. Kind of entertaining!

I'm fortunate that the roads around where I live are quite nice. I have a reasonable 17mile commute which isnt the worst drive in the world, and 30secs from my front door ive got winding country lanes that don't require stig-style driving to be enjoyed, its as much about the scenery as the drive itself. I used to love driving up and down the motorway and think nothing of it when I first passed my test. I somehow managed to avoid the motorway for a couple of years at one point, but when i got back on there i was thinking "OMFG what am I doing?" I think what most people enjoy about driving when they pass their test is the freedom and discovering places for themselves. This is gradually lost over time as it becomes more necessity than anything else. Personally, I still enjoy it, but the roads, or should I say drivers, have undoubtedly changed, certainly over the last 15 years.

try cornwall.... full of coffin dodgers who either cant turn the steering wheel fast enough because their colostomy bag is in the way or the grey matter has got so bad they can't remember what the right hand pedal is for!! mind you the pain of that is offset by the joy of watching "foreigners" (ie anyone from north of the tamar river) trying to negotiate single track country lanes in their ridiculous softroaders , especially when they display their total lack of reversing skills straight into the hedge....yes t'osser they are made of granite!!

I've got to say that I do enjoy driving, but it makes a great difference what I am driving. What I don't enjoy is the quality, or lack thereof of other peoples driving. It would appear to me that the driving skills that a lot of other motorists have is well and truly on the decline. I think that the problem here is that people look at cars in much the same was as they look at white goods, its just an appliance. They don't really care about them, as long as they get them from A to B without any drama then thats fine, and if it gets a bit beat about en route, well, thats OK too! I think that the motoring enthusiast is on the decline, people like you and I are becoming fewer and further between. Other drivers seem to be far too involved with their phone, food, coffee, make up, and today I saw a chap shaving while he was driving to be concerned with actually driving the car! I think that this is down to cars being too easy to drive, so people don't want to have to bother with concentrating on what they're driving when they've got more important stuff to do. I genuinely believe that if you're not a car enthusiast then you have no right being behind the wheel, and if the roads were only filled with other car enthusiasts then we'd probably all be enjoying our motoring a little more!

On the Sussex coast, driving is pretty damn nice. The only frustration is in getting 1 mile away from my house which can take an hour or more. Beyond that though, it's all nice driving roads snaking across the Sussex downs. Winding leafy lanes and some long fast A & B roads that never seem to get jammed up.
There's a long straight lane not so far away... probably evolved from a Roman road because it's just perfectly flat and straight and goes on forever but is just a leafy narrow country lane... and it used to be a great spot for local hot rods to do timed 1/4 mile runs (too narrow for a side by side race), but the surface of the road began to fall apart about five years ago and it's been like the surface of the moon since then, so nobody goes there any more.
I happened to drive down there at the weekend and saw signs forewarning of the road being closed for resurfacing. It's so remote and out of the way it's perfect. There's literally nothing but fields for miles around. So I'm planning on being the first person to rag the heck out of my car down it once it's finished, before word gets out that it's been repaired and the police start hanging around again like they used to.
It's just the first mile that's the problem.

Driving around rural Suffolk near Ipswich in the rush hour can test my patience! Lots of morons totally incapable of driving up to the speed limit, cannot judge the size of their vehicle, dithering, using phones and god forbid two cars meeting head to head on a single track road! I’m glad I no longer use the bmw for the daily run.

We have some great driving roads here in Lincolnshire, however i drive for a living,so when i’m home at weekends the last thing i want to be doing is driving.
However i do think its also partly to do with why you’re going out for a drive, if you are running errands shopping etc etc, then not the best, but if its just for fun, with no timescale to be anywhere, and a route that you can pick and choose enroute as you go,then i tend just to go with the flow.... of course thats if nowadays you can justify the fuel costs to do so ... which is another area .....

I don’t like commuting, but I don’t do a lot of commuting. I live in a very small rural town and work is the other side of town a couple of miles away, which is just down the bypass. If I go to the shops I walk or wait until late when it’s quiet, or occasionally drive to a larger town 10 miles down the road, which is an out of town/retail park style affair.
Shropshire is very rural and some great driving roads round here, plus it’s a neighbouring county to Wales, which has many great driving roads.

I totally agree, The whole place is full of total idiots, either no insurance, no license, or like you say driving their dads a3 like there’s no speed limits. I only go off for a drive in the country lanes around, studley, Stratford towards Evesham when I got for a blast.

I have to say that I don’t like driving much anymore either. I used to love it. I do a fair few miles due to my job but the amount of incompetence is staggering, how did these people pass their test?
What frustrates me most is (old) people who will drive at 38 mph in a 60 but carry on at 38mph in a 30! It’s like their car is stuck at this speed.
Middle lane hoggers People on their phone, even if the phone isn’t to their ear but flat in the palm of their hand, what’s that all about? People who drive right up my jaxi And why do new BMW,Audi and Merc drivers think they have a god given right to come flying down the fast lane, hook themselves onto my bumper and try to harras me out of the way while I’m doing just slightly more than the speed limit, they need to realise that doing that I’ll just take longer to overtake the vehicle along side me.
Going out on my motor bike is even worse, so many 30 and 40 mph limits out in the country side now
Rant over, don’t mean to offend anyone

I was on the M1 early last Saturday morning so not too busy. Some dick up my chuff in a red Nissan suv & it was hammering down so spray was bad. He’s flashing lights etc, anyhow I pull across as soon as I can & he’s along side me ranting, so I flick him ‘the bird’. He carries on, waving his arms around & so on, so I just slow down, he does same, i speed up, he does same, you get the picture. This continues a bit, I look across at him & he’s fiddling in his top pocket, I think, is he getting his phone out to film me or sumat. No he produces his Police warrant card in its wallet, leans over the passenger seat & presses it up to the near side window, all whilst doing 75 ish. I gave him a slow hand clap & another dose of the bird. What a complete tosser

People on their phone, even if the phone isn’t to their ear but flat in the palm of their hand, what’s that all about? Boils my pee. Just as bad when they keep looking down because their phone is obviosly sitting in their lap, like they think no one will notice. Last week I had a woman behind me doing this in busy traffic. It seemed that she would look down as the traffic started moving. I moved over and waved her past, and rejoined behind her. I think she realised why.

Just as bad when they keep looking down because their phone is obviosly sitting in their lap I had this the other day on the M20 of all places. Again, driving the murder-wagon, notices a woman driving along clearly on facebook or something like that. As luck would have it we both came off at the same junction, so while there was traffic I pulled along side her and told her exactly what I thought of her. She didn't give a f**k. I get drink-driving, I don't agree with it, but I get it, you've had a drink and you're not making decisions, it's a bad thing to do, but I can see how someone would find themselves doing it. I get answering your phone, not answering mine makes me anxious, so I make sure to leave it out the way on silent when I drive, but not everyone thinks it's as bad a thing to do as me, so I can see how they'd make that bad decision. But using f**king facebook while you're driving, or reading the news, or texting someone while you're driving displays such extreme disregard for human life it completely blows my mind.

What I've found interesting about this thread is the people mentioned drive in the same way in my locale, and I would guess across the UK!
And not just one of the groups mentioned, every single one of them!
Roads are a very aggressive place these days, I'm sure a lot of physical Road Rage happens now, or the frustration is taken out in other ways such as drink, drugs, or abusing those close to the person.
It would be an interesting study on modern life.
Those sh1tty new car adverts with nothing else on the roads are still shown and are a total farce.

Not just the UK. I see most of the same behaviours here in New Zealand. On one occasion I caught up to a courier van being driven at 80 km/h in a 100 zone. Wondered why we was going slow. When I passed him I observed that he was talking on the phone he held in his left hand while writing on a clipboard balanced on the steering wheel with his right. Another thing one is drivers who can't stand to be behind an old car or to be passed by an old car. No matter how fast the old car is going they'll pass and then slow down to what they feel is a comfortable speed which is usually slower than they were going when they were "stuck" behind me. Similarly pulling out in front of an old car because they expect it to be going slow. I used to get this a lot when I dailied my '71 Wolseley 1300 (2006 - 2016ish). I'd be doing 70+ mph on the open road and I'd get plonkers pulling out of side roads right in front of me (possibly caused in part by our speed limit of 100 km/h (62ish mph) but still stupid and dangerous). They don't do it anywhere near so often when I'm driving at similar speeds in my current daily ('90 Ford Falcon wagon).
