I found myself having to buy a cheap runabout recently and got an Aygo. It seems decent enough for what it is, it does 52mpg and gets me around, did have to do a couple of wheel bearings though which weren't overly cheap and the engine is a little tappety from cold
Is small though..

She mentioned an Aygo over the weekend as she had seen a new one in a very nice Magenta colour. But then I saw one and yes very small

If it wasn't your main car, Suzuki Alto. 3-4 year old ones in budget.
Never had one, but Honda Jazz's are much bigger inside than out and it's a Honda so good chance it will just keep working until it turns to dust. Looking at 2011 plate for your budget.

I would lol I’ve fancied an older £400 beater one for a while now particularly a yellow one, chopped springs and Moon discs for the win 😂😂

I really wanted a yellow one, she also hates yellow cars 😂 So that's only reason I haven't had one yet lol. There was an amazing jdm import on Autotrader other year, yellow with white louis vitton (or some designer) retrim, it was awesome, but divorces are really expensive 😂 Ok, so it's still actually for sale! (it's in your budget! www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201411279272713

My mrs has a BMW 120D 2005 for her daily. It was £2200 with full leather interior, climate control. sat nav etc with just over 110k on the clock. A huge amount of car for the money and returns 41mpg on short runs or 47 on long runs. plenty of room for kids in the back and good boot space too.

VW Golf Plus are really good value right now. 3k should get you one with relatively low miles and FSH. Decent reliable cars and cheap to run if you get one with the 105bhp PD engine - tax is only about 150 a year on those

Must admit, the plus has been a great car. Bit slow above 70 and noisy compared to the mk5 gti I had. Mine is the S spec, so no rear speakers or trays. Try amd go for a SE as the stereo in mine is pants.
2006 06 plate
Bought on 146k now on 163k Things replaced: Lift pump Cambelt Rear callipers All brakes Drivers door latch Indicator stalk Passenger side mirror indicator Cv boot. Battery last year when the factory one started to struggle.
Things that are original: All suspension, clutch, gearbox, engine and everything attached to it.
Current problems: Dual mass is starting to judder sometimes, gearbox could do with a oil change. Rust on front arches and pass cill. Weird issue when it snows, boot latch pops (only when it snows!) At some point in it's life, Stevie wonder has painted it and my wife crashed it into our house and again backwards into a fence post. Apparently the house moved.. 🤷♂️

Mk 3 Mondeo ST TDCI estate. Loads of toys, loads of space. Great for taking stuff to the tip. Mine is a 56 plate which I've had for 3 years now, mapped to 196 bhp. Cost me £2500. Had 138k with full history when I got it, almost at 198k now and its doing 45-50 mpg round the doors and 55+ on a run, managed to get 59 on holiday to Cornwall where we did around 1500 miles (there and back plus driving around), car loaded up and 2 adults and 2 kids. That wasn't driving like miss daisy either. All its cost me so far is both front wheel bearings, centre and rear exhaust and 2 full sets of tyres. I have had bother with the turbo actuator, but that was a free fix because it just needed 3 wires resoldering. Great car.

When people ask me this, I play it safe and choose generally the most reliable. I generally reply with: Small: Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Suzuki Swift, Ford Fiesta
Medium: Civic spaceship (diesels seem more reliable than petrols, no dpf on them either) Toyota Auris (petrol, but all dull) Ford Focus MK2 (petrol, generally avoid diesel - especially 1.6TDCi)
Ford's won't be the most reliable, however every garage in this country should be able to fix them and cheaply.
If going VAG, watch out for early FSI engines. They need to run off super unleaded or they get grumpy. Also complex and expensive to fix. Better off with a diesel. Some had DPF, some didn't. Post 2010 the DPFs regenned much better - e.g. our 2010 A4 TDi is happy to regenerate it's DPF at 20mph in city driving.
Mini late MK1 are good, early can have gearbox troubles. Mini MK2 has Peugeot prince engine - avoid.
BMW 1-series - generally avoid anything 4cyl. Diesels have cam chain issues (amongst other big issues) that requires engine drop. 6cyl petrols are the pick but are a bit thirsty.
A-class - a bit naff at this age+generation and limited engine bay access makes a PIA to fix.
Vauxhall's - cheap and a bit nasty.
Renault's - post 2008 they upped their game massively. They realised they can't get away with cars crapping themselves if the company was to survive. Petrols a safe bet. Mégane III and Laguna III petrols you get an awful lot for your money. Laguna III uses mostly Nissan petrols and electronics.
Peugeot - cheap, ugly curse word. Poor ergonomics.
Citroen - cheap as PSA but actually stylish. Petrols mostly the pick.
Stuff generally designed late 90s and sold till mid 2000 is really peak reliability. After that the diesels had a lot more emissions curse word strapped on. Petrols went direct injection and suffer the same complexity and expense as diesels. The Germans went DI in a big way first (ok yes Mitsubishi did earlier, but they're not big here).
Curve ball, you can get lease 1.0TSI Octavias dirt cheap ATM. Like £150 all in per month with minimal deposit for 2yrs. I run cars 7+ yrs old and I've spent far more than that on running costs and depreciation per month amortised. New car has new tyres+brakes+warranty+2yr servicing, so fixing your monthly expenditure to a known predicable level.

Projects/Classics: 1974 MGB GT (it's best not to talk about this one), 1972 Austin 1100 (The Purple Peril that has consumed a lot of fresh metal, welding gas and wire so far) Daily drivers: 2010 Audi A4 (my wife seems to have taken ownership of this), 2008 Audi TT (I hate them, supposed to have been a stop gap but currently stuck with it), Specialized Allez (cycling to work allows me to eat loads of cake)

As above don't get a vauxhall Astra, my other half has killed 3
An 02 plate 2.2 SRI - Snapped camchain An 06 plate 1.9 SRI cdti - Snapped cambelt & exploded 6th gear and 12 plate 2.0 SRI cdti - seized oil pump (new engine cost 3k fitted) this is actually a really nice car to drive though, and very comfy and pretty quick
And yesterday she was driving my 67 plate A4 and the Radiator burst....
Maybe its not the cars fault Maybe she is a serial car killer.

Back in 2006 my wife had the chance of a company car or a car allowance. She took the car allowance and she found a 1997 Audi A6 2.5TDi with 6 gears and the 140bhp 5 cylinder lump for £2,700 The allowance paid for the car. So when she was made redundant 18 months later we still had the car. All told we had it for 7 years and did something like 85,000 miles in that period. Power was decent, and fuel economy was brilliant for such a big car. I averaged 60mpg once driving from Gateshead to Brighton.
I don't know if it's just me but larger barges become good value if you can get one that's good on fuel like the old A6, because the size seems to put people off buying them second hand, especially when they get to nearly 10 years old.

My wife loves her Volvo C30 2.0d
Drives nice, quite nippy, boot isn't the largest, depends if you like the looks.
Large selection of engines to choose from depending on what you want

My wife and I daily old cars. We just keep them going with regular maintenance and depreciation is not an issue. Her 1990 BG Laser has 430,000 km on it and just refuses to die. It's been banged around a bit but mechanically it is good and it hasn't needed any rust work yet.
edit: 432,300 km as of today, still going strong.
