I’m looking to get the Mrs sorted with a good daily now she is back in full time work. We will have to get it on finance and looking to spend about £3k We’ve never had a “new” car of a car on finance before so it’s all about of a mine field. She’s really wanting a mid 2000 mini clubman but everyone I speak to about say to avoid like the plague. New shape Beetle and Audi A3’s are on the radar too.
Any tips on modern dailies or finance etc grately received

Diesel mondeo are supposed to be a good reliable car. I was in a similar situation myself recently... but I ended up buying a mk5 Golf Gti.

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

Any Lambo will suit her fine. Good visibility, nice light clutch, easy to live with around town, reasonable mpg & cheap servicing 😉

I'd steer clear of anything vw, audi, seat, skoda We bought a mk5 golf for a reliable modern German daily. A nice well looked after example and it's an absolute pile. I have mates with bmw's of a similar age and the difference in quality is immediately obvious when looking under the bonnet. VAG really don't deserve the reputation they have any more

I think mk4 golf era and before they where pretty bulletproof, especially with the 1.9 pd engine. Nearly every mk5 golf I see is covered in rust though. And the dash rattles are enough to drive you insane. I avoid driving it as much as I can, it costs too much in oil to run

^^^ What he said. My wife has a 2010 Yaris and it's a cracking little car. As long as you service it, it won't go wrong. Same bodyshape came out in 2006 so you should be able to find something easily for your budget.

What sort of distance would her daily commute be? That would be a big factor in this decision for me

Depends how modern. I bought herself a 05 MK5 Golf 1.9. 400k on it now and only bits replaced have been worn out from mileage and curse word roads. Paid a grand for it, remapped it to 155bhp and it's slowly getting all the GTI stuff from my car as I upgrade bits and pieces. Got GTI suspension and front brakes this weekend

Dacia Sandero, My wife has had one since 2016, 1.2 petrol version, absolutely reliable, zero issues with it.
As you would expect it's basic i.e not much to go wrong especially as it's old tried and tested tech coming from Reanult models of old.
You could pick up a 3 year old car with lowish miles for £3000. Depends what she wants in a car I suppose, my wife loves hers because of it's simplicity and to be honest I rather like driving it for the same reason but if you want soft touch materials and gadgets galore you will have to look elsewhere.
Good luck with the search.

VAG really don't deserve the reputation they have any more I bought a high mileage 2006 golf plus from (blind) auction just under 5 years ago. It's rough and done 163k, never had any major issues with it, drives really nice. Just getting a bit rusty.

The wife uses a 55 plate one of these with the 1.8 diesel so no dpf on it, great spec including full leather, heated seats, air con etc and it cost about £1800, had it three years and all its had is a turbo pipe, front tyres and front discs and pads. Also with it being a Ford if I keep it long enough it will be worth a mint! 😂😂😂 My daily is the big brother Grand C Max with the sliding side doors, great car.

Sensible and modern buy a ford. Just vary depending on size requirements Skoda also are pretty decent as well these days. Buy nothing Mercedes related (I'm a lawyer, had more than one successful case against them). Almost as much as getting the best car available (see above) You want to make sure, especially if the car is on finance, that the company aftersale care is top notch and ib my experience Ford have done very well when called upon. On a separate note, lovely vintage photos up there. Couldn't see any cars though. 😀

Personally unless you do a 30+ min 70mph run every 2 weeks avoid modern diesels with dpf's. Volvo has one, golf doesn't, I don't do miles to justify a diesel never mind 2 so the dpf does my head in.
Just to add, DO NOT GET A VAUXHALL, I don't know anyone that's had one that hasn't had to keep throwing money at it. I also had a insignia hire car (6 weeks old) and it broke down. Enterprise guy said they have them arrive likr that from the factory
