So scrolling back to 1998 we decided to build our first Kit car ......now letโs be honest we have all seen rubbish kit car builds and thatโs not me so a trip to the Westfield factory was arranged to check out the quality !! Westfield quickly put my mind at ease and we ordered a 2 litre pinto kit with wide body and a V8 bonnet in bright red ๐๐ it was a great car to build and I hand built a 2 litre Pinto running twin 40 Webberโs , it was brilliant but the crazy man inside of me wanted a V8 Westfield !!! The sound oh my god epic !! V8 Westfield kits in 1999 were special build only and Richard at Westfield needed a pinto Demo car so a deal was done but not just a std V8 westy , I wanted it too be special ! Spec was a wide body with independent rear suspension , Bigger Brakes on the front , engine oil cooler , front ARB , I also wanted to go for fuel injection and did not want the side pipes !!! So September 2000 we collected our V8 kit and got cracking , the build was Awesome ๐ I still think itโs one of the best cars I had ever built !! Over the summer of 2001 we entered various event including the big Westfield owners club summer meet at Curborough , I was delighted to win Best engine bay and best Bodywork ๐๐ The Car was simply stunning to drive sounded awesome and was very quick !!! In Oct of 2001 we decided to move house and I had to realise we had to sell the V8 to raise funds , I was gutted ๐ฉ luckily I had a friend who loved the car and offered me a serious amount of dosh for it so I let it go .......... watching it disappear down the road was a gutting experience!!!
Thats chapter 1 ...............anybody interested in chapter 2 ?

Ok so Chapter 2 . Roll on 18 years , in that time I moved house , built a Ultima , bought a Noble , Raced a Noble and became British champion and had a life changing Kidney transplant ๐๐ May this year I get a phone call from a old mate , have not see him in years and he wants me to buy my Westfield V8 back ๐ฑ๐ฑ only problem is he has broken the Gearbox and itโs not run in 6 years !!!! Iโm sceptical at first , itโs going to be pretty tired after 18 years .....................or so I thought ๐คช๐คช Quick chat with the boss and we decide to go and have a look , we turned up at Johnโs house (old mate) and the insulated roller garage door is down , as we walk up the drive the garage door starts to rise , curse word my heart is beating bloody quick , the V8 was a car I loved and I was gutted to sell it !!! What sort of condition will it be in ? Simple answer .........flipping awesome ๐ we sold her with 3000 miles on the clock she had now done 6000 miles , never been out in the rain , never been left in the sunshine !!!!!! Back in love again ๐๐

Just wondering why you are tearing down an engine that has only done 3000 miles more than when you sold it? Pursuit of more power?

I really want to know what is up with the welded rocker adjusters? Someone put hydraulic lifters in there?

Someone has been messing around with this Rover V8. They never had the adjustable rockers because these standard have hydraulic lifters. The pushrods also are not the standard ones Looking at the ignition, i would say it is an SD1 or TR8 engine Peter

I seem to remember reading somewhere that twin plenum Vitesse used Volvo rocker arms with welded up adjusters.

Well spotted guys , yes itโs a ex police car twin plenum engine ๐๐ The cam followers look hydraulic!!
engine has been stood for 6 years and to be honest I love building engines ๐๐ Itโs a rare engine so did not want to risk it , just going to polish the crank , new bearings , hone the bores with new rings . Heads are going to be rebuilt with new guides ect then it all put back together like brand new ๐

The standard Rover V8 has hydraulic lifters. The welded up adjustable rockers were used on 'Twin Plenum' engines. An explanation from an ex Rover engineer might help.
'Most, but not all, twin plenum engines had adjustable rockers with steel posts and different push rods, BUT retained the normal hydraulic tappets (lifters) These were fitted to allow homologation of these parts for Group A racing.'
'There was NO power increase from these parts as they operated as normal fixed rockers.'

Thanks for the info , I always new it was a special engine , just looking at the exhaust Gaskets there is loads to take out to match the baskets ! Guess itโs time to get the grinding kit out ! The cast manifolds are not bad but the exhaust ports out the head are pretty small compared to the gasket !!

Sounds to me like the only sensible thing to do is fit a Group A camshaft, solid lifters and matching adjustable rockers

Have a look at my G27 thread for the group A rockers - page 3 or so. 30A is a 3.5 9.75 Vitesse SD1 lump - and a reasonably good engine. The other group A parts that made it into some engines are the rods - these are not as obvious to tell apart as the rocker gear as they are visually identical to the stock items - You have to weigh them - they are made from a superior steel and are about 40gms heavier than a stock rod. The Vitesse had the best of the SD1 heads but they are pretty much the same as the later heads and not quite as good as the 4.6 heads and all stock Rover heads are not good at producing power. If going grinding, the end of the port will not bring you any gains - probably a just risk of reversion. Love an RV8 me.

You guys are a bad influence ๐๐๐ To be honest the car does not need any more power !!! Itโs such fun and sounds so different with the under car exhaust

Mr. Tuxman, I'm new to this website, and your threads make for excellent reading and suggest to me a life being very well lived. The Noble is the dog's naughty parts and all that Rover engine in that little chassis...."too much is never enough". Thanks for taking the time to post. John, Connecticut/USA
