Heres the thing, I have been wondering if its ok to put a Petrol engine into a 2001 pick up that was originally equipped with a diesel engine? Is this allowed, and would I need to get it tested once its done, or is it just a case of tell the DVLA what you've done, and give them the engine numbers to update the V5c, then just MOT as usual?

My friend has a few kangoo vans that are converted to 172 engines the same as mine, and the details are just updated with the dvla as you would with any other conversion, no tests etc needed Then when I went for my next mot, the tester updated the fuel type on the mot as it was still down as a diesel

Of course it's allowed, i've done conversions both ways and never had problems with DVLA, only having provenance on the new engine. But they seem to have relaxed a bit on that front now! Just give them the new engine number and capacity and change the fuel type from "Heavy oil" to "petrol"

Thanks for the advise chaps, would the same apply if I wanted to fit an engine with carburettors or would I need to stick to a similar aged engine to the pick-up, and keep it fuel injected?

It's more common than you think, especially around London for LEZ reasons. They tend to ask for some kind of independent report stating where the engine came From, or the v5 of the donor vehicle, but sometimes they don't and just sign it off, because DVLA.

I think the engine swap DVLA implications were covered on another thread and went something like;
You need to provide proof of the new engine identity, receipt and vehicle i.d. it came from iirc.

Think you'd need to keep it similar aged engine with injection, as it will need to pass age-related emissions levels (age of vehicle, not engine that is), so ECU and cats needed
Can't imagine any cars came fitted with carbs in 2001, as cats were compulsory from 98 onwards I think??

You could fit an earlier engine and it would mean you only had to pass the emission test for the age of the engine. This may have changed but I fitted an old MK2 cavalier 1.6 to a later Astra. I was going to fit the engine in something newer again but it was just too much hassle as anything much later use the engine ECU to control the dash. I had proof of where it came from as the Cavalier belonged to me. Best check the rules to see exactly what it said but it was just a case of the MOT tester changing the type of emission test.

What kind of pickup? Might help a little as some engine conversions can be run stand alone

Whatever comes along cheapest. But it will be something with a separate chassis like a ranger, hilux, l200, navara, y'know that sort of thing.
