Good day everyone. I’m after some thought from like minded people about what to do regarding cars. I currently own a Mazda 6 diesel daily family car (keeping) and my Mk2 Golf Gti 8v and my Mk2 MR2. Very rarely for me all three cars are MOT’d taxes and insured. And actually running pretty well. I’ve done circa 100 miles in each of them over the last week with no issues. My question is I’m quite tempted to sell one of the either MR2 or Golf and get myself a little more of a project when I move house as I’ll have a garage to work on in comfort. Current thoughts are on the lines of mini or mx5 to turbo? But then I can always be swayed by anything 80’s-90’s and ford! Is this a sensible idea or keep hold of both and enjoy? There are other options obviously I could recommissioned the golf to a higher standard (just don’t know if I’ve got the love for it) or a could swap in a turbo engine into the MR2? But then i don’t think I would be as fun as a turbocharged mx5 as it’s not as much of a hooligan car more precise sports car. Now I’m really enjoying driving the MR2 as it’s great fun and makes a good noise. But he golf has a more appreciated status and gets more respect and the family can fit in it. Decisions decisions!

The Golf has a fair bit of class, and your family appreciate it more (as you've said). So keep that.
The MR2 serves one purpose, for ragging a bit. So swap the MR2 for an MX5 and turbo it. You'll get more of a refined hooning car for probably cheaper than the MR2.

Sell both, buy something else. Youve owned them both and can buy another if you miss them. Theres loads of variety out there you need to try though.

If it were me I'd get rid of both as well . The Mini thing I really appreciate and would love to do! I've done the Stage 1 thing but that's about it. The MX-5 thing I also see! But in the end mine went, partly down to two reasons: -Unless I stored it over winter I would come back to a rot box; most of my friend's NA's have seen sills (sometimes twice!), as did mine. -To get to a power level I wanted (200-250BHP) which as much refinement and fuss free(ish) nature as stock, I figured it would cost me around £1.5-2k. That includes the ECU, injectors, MAP sensor (ME221 has one of these built in), wiring loom depending on which way you go, Turbo, manifold, exhaust rectification, breather mods so it doesn't leak oil everywhere, and of course the rolling road session. I doubt then it would fulfill my needs as much as the M3 has, which once you did the costs is possibly more to run, but about the same to buy, seeing as I wanted a rot-free NA as the car to do it with.

Moving them both on gets my vote too - then you could probably opt for something that has always turned your head or made you look twice - or why not try a car from a decade that you have not tried before - 50's or 60's (assuming that you haven't) it does not have to be quick for it to be a heap of fun and still turn heads either - you will be amazed at what mods are available for Midgets / MGB's / Minors / Minis but even some of the barges of the day were and still are a lot of fun.

I would sell them both and get something older and more interesting.
I’m soon to be selling a fully-restored 1971 1380 Swiftune Mini with full Cooper S running gear and nicely beefed-up, but still subtle styling. It gets so much attention (positive) from people old and young wherever it goes and you could squeeze the family in and it’s about as fun as a car could be, plus it’s tax and MOT exempt and costs less than £100 a month on a limited mileage classic car policy (garaged). I’m not plugging my car per se, but something along those lines would be what I would recommend as if it was cared for and maintained to the standard it is, it could be used regularly, enjoyed and still be an appreaciating asset.

My bias opinion would be to keep the mk2, but if you’re doubting the love for it, then I think it’ll be time to move ithe, both on in search of a new project

As Grumpy has said move them both on and get a proper classic, but which do you enjoy the most and that's the one to keep then you if you do find your ultimate classic you will have money in the bank to get it.
That's my opinion.
It's a tough decision for you.

seems like a fairy resounding consensus on gett My rid of both lol.
I’m not sure if it’s me or if I’m having a wobble. I’ve always had a couple of cars. The daily and a fun/project/weekend car. Always the second car has been pretty cheap and disposable.
I think I really enjoy the purchase and recommissioning of a car no matter what the price! Kinda loose interest when they are on the road haha.
Tbh the mr2 is a £300 mot failure that I’ve got back on the road. But it has full serivive history and £1k + spent on clutch beating etc in the last 500 miles by the P.O. is a cracking car! And lots of fun.
The Golf is something I thought I always wanted. It’s perfectly retro with a good following. Parts are cheap and it’s so easy to work on. I’ve done everything myself. (Can’t be said for other cars I’ve owned) it’s been very dependable and done 600 miles in a week in the winter when the weather was bad with no fus. And it looks great when polished up. Just a bit soulless and dare I say it boring....
I could get rid of the Mazda but I mostly do 700+ miles a week and this things is so comfy returns 50-55mpg has 220bhp and 460Nm plus it’s an estate. Nothing at the minute is going to beat it plus I’ve just sunk nearly £2k into it in cam chain, callipers, disk pads hand brake and tyres lol. It needs to work those off!!!
I realise I’ve been rambling for a while but it may continue as I’m on my own in a hotel with the bar for company (the joys of working away!)
I like the mini idea...I’ve had two. First one being a 1340cc with cams, buckets and harnesses, 14 point adjustable spax. High-lows, 12x7’s etc etc. Second was a massive project that I didn’t have the money or space for. But this will change when we move house.
Mx5’s Again I’ve had two. Uk and import mk1 1.6 115bhp models. Bought cheap and fixed up and enjoyed. I work with lads who had turbos and they are so much fun and easy to work on and cheap (relatively) but then so are minis.
I think my heart lies with ford XR’s namely 2i’s and 3i’s. I had a 2i but it was too much of a flintstones car for me at the time. Should have kept it in hind sight as won’t get one for that money anymore.....
A mate suggested putting them on eBay with a reserve (don’t have to sell) and seeing what happens, so I may do that.
Thanks for Endsleigh me in my thoughts and allowing me to use the site as a therapy session haha. The missus definitely does give two hoots lol.

Have you been in your friend's MX-5s? That for me would be one deciding factor.
A Mk2 MR2 is becoming a cool thing mind you!

The main issue being they are about 5’8” and 8st and I’m 6’4” and 20st lol. Still fit in a standard one but hey have bride seats in theirs which there is not a hope in hell of me fitting in! I am really enjoying the Mr2 at the minute but only had it on the road a week haha and done about 300 miles in it.

Keep at least one. It's a real mojo-sapper to get cars on the road then sell them and have nothing to hoon around in.
I would keep Mazda keep MR2 sell Golf (if it's boring you, and doesn't need any major work, nows the time) buy project when you are ready.
Then you're under no pressure to get a project, you still have a fun car you can use and tinker at if you want, and you can watch out until you find something you really want. I find it very helpful to make a list every 18 months of the cars I really want to own, it's usually the same things, then I cull whatever I've accumulated that's not on the list and focus on finding what I really want. Might work for you.

Might work for you. This is exactly my thoughts. Golf is in the garage parked up and ready to be sold. I’m enjoying the mr2 so much at the minute plus it owes me next to nothing. Plus if the golf doesn’t sell then I’ll look into an engine swap or build a fun 8v motor for it and just keep it as a very tidy retro car. Should never loose out on it.

I do fancy something a little more classic. I think I need something with good body work as that’s my biggest hate. I can do all the mechanicals (well most lol) but dispose bodywork. Would love a clean sleeper. The mr2 is great. I don’t know if it’s the cheapness factor but I’ve driven it loads recently and it’s been great. Just done 280 miles in it today and it’s such a good fun (slow) car well unless you spend you’re time at 5-7k rpm all day it’s slow...
