First time for me... never seemed much point going to a Volkswagen show without a Volkswagen before. This time we managed two, though logistics of getting the li'l un to her Beavers camp later that day meant Mrs Luckyseven had to provide support vehicle cover in her F*rd. It's annoying when life gets in the way of cars. Anyway, first impressions were not promising anyway. It wasn't actually snowing, but I was still peeing slush puppies from the weekend before at Goodwood and the skies were very grey and ominous. As we plodded along the A3 Ada complained that the camera wouldn't focus properly. I think he was going with some excuse about the raindrops on the window but I wasn't really listening. It did mean he got a lovely shot of my Levellers sticker at least Levelling the land by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Eventually he managed to get the hang of this fiendish modern technology and fluked some pics of what he was supposed to be aiming at, Lewis' Beetle Lewis by Nick Liassides, on Flickr It's funny, I've noticed since getting the Beetle that everyone seems to love them and want to point and smile and wave. Weirdos. The pair of us traipsing along a gloomy trunk road in the middle of April seemed to cheer people's days up no end. Even when we were stuck in the Beetle equivalent of lorry elephant racing.... where an overtake can last for five miles Elephant shrew racing by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Actually, that's not strictly true. Mine's a feeble 1200 that in the words of the immortal Barry of Sheene "couldn't pull the cock off a chocolate mouse" and Lewis might be as much as 17-something so it's probably got ...ooooh, at least four or maybe even five more horsepowerz. Much more fasterer. Lewis r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Anyway, we arrived. Ada had been bleating about having to get in early before the queue got horrendous, so we arrived early to find zero queue and straight in to the car parks. Dang. So now we've got over an hour to kill before the bloody doors open. I've got both the kids with me, which is often a bit of a gamble at shows trying to keep them focused and entertained. Fortunately the Boy took it on himself to scurry about the car park spotting interesting cars and then shouting to tell us where they were. And fortunately, there were a lot of interesting cars. Gotta love a show where the car park is a show in itself and the Boy was reigned in by us pointing out if he was to shout "BEETLE" every time he spotted a Beetle, he was going to end up hoarse and we were going to end up rather fed up with him So how about we look at some cars and leave the waffle behind then? So by now we'd pretty much exhausted the fun to be had in the carparks and joined the queue outside the doors. It was chilly and grey and mizzly... what Mrs Luckyseven would call "dreek" cos she's from north of The Wall... and after I got told off for telling the kids to stop bickering and channel their aggression into a game of knuckles I kinda felt I was a bit bored of queuing. I know it says ten o'clock on the website and all, but maybe just open the doors 15 minutes early, huh? Anyway, once we made it in and got sent to the back of the queue again because the flunkies' barcode scanner was malfunctioning and couldn't scan our tickets.... "you just saw us buy them. You were standing five feet away from that woman who sold them us. She's right there." said woman nods agreement. Flunky is very apologetic. We still have to scan them, sir. Jesus Christ, what is wrong with this country? I bet no-one gives a fox-picture if you're double-scanned and triple-checked at a car show in La Paz or Kuala Lumpar. Besides, what about checking my bag? Oh, it's not for security? It's for fire regulations. Jesus Christ. Tossers Right. Apparently this belongs to James May but I only know because I eavesdropped it. I'd rather curse word in my hands and clap than watch the Grand Tour Buggy Mays by Nick Liassides, on Flickr but I do like some nice banded wheels. And glitter Buggy Mays d by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle blue display r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr The cars in this entrance hall were all mightily impressive. And very hard to get a clear photograph of. But worth a bit of patience Beetle oval purple drag r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle oval purple drag by Nick Liassides, on Flickr This KG is in any context, absolutely jaw-dropping in fit, finish and attention-to detail. But just like when it was at the Classic Car Show, it was so popular that at no point could I get a photo of the entire car. Had to be content with stolen snapshots of little bits of it. Sorry Karmann Ghia green bay by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Karmann Ghia green int by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Karmann Ghia green d by Nick Liassides, on Flickr This one was no less astonishing but slightly less popular, lol Karmann Ghia grey lowlight by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Karmann Ghia grey lowlight int by Nick Liassides, on Flickr I love a drag car because of how they tend to be mad not just in terms of speed but in terms of zoinks paintjobs and lairiness. And mostly because of the details that are evolved through the crucible of competition.... the obsessive lightening everything, the top-notch componentry and the sheer speed of progress forced by breaking everything time and time again until you find something that works and doesn't oblivionise itself Beetle blue drag by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle blue drag bdg by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle blue drag r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle blue drag lgt by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle blue drag d by Nick Liassides, on Flickr details, details... I read the article on this Bug in VolksWorld magazine, like some of you no doubt did. And I was amazed, like I expect a fair few of you were. But seeing it in person left me feeling a bit weird. Whilst I'd like to point out this is just a personal feeling not necessarily based in any kind of reality, and in no way meant to denigrate someone else's pride and joy.... but... Beetle red oval r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle red oval bay by Nick Liassides, on Flickr well, that bit's fine. But the rest of it.... every little detail was like, OMG, taken in isolation. Rare, old, original, hard to source, worthy of respect on every level. But there was just too much of it all slung together. If it was a Japanese car, it'd be a ricer; just too much mods. Sometimes less is more. There. I've said it. Now kick me Beetle red oval by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle red oval lgtmrr by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle oval minke r by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beetle oval minke wh by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Y'know what I miss? Just put some coffee and hot water in a cup, quickly as possible, and get the hell out of my life [/rant] Finally caffiene-d up, back into the fray. We'd rediscovered Ada and he'd discovered Hebmullers so we set off in search of some proper convertible righteousness. This was arresting en route though, and needed proper obeisance... I've only ever seen one of these beauties in my life before, and I've been to a lot of shows over the years. Four of them clustered in a huddle was some kind of epiphany. How right they got it. How sad they never got the chance to make more. And if the red Oval disappointed slightly having seen it given so much kudos in print, the modded Heb delivered way above its weight. Nothing I'd change on that, just superb in every respect. And speaking of respect, massive respect to the owner for having the balls to put his own stamp on such a rare and desirable car. And actually make it better Hebmuller roof up by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller ivory wh by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller ivory st wh by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller ivory stock by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller ivory by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller red by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller roof down by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller ivory dsh by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Hebmuller ivory stock bay by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Everyone ought to have a gearstick-mounted ashtray. So impractical on so many levels, yet so bonkers cool Hebmuller ivory stock int by Nick Liassides, on Flickr After that, the only sensible thing to do was go outside. Mostly because I wanted a ciggie. While the kids had fun running about through the stands (never been to a car show at a horse track before. Surprisingly well suited to it) we looked at some vans and things Splitty vans by Nick Liassides, on Flickr My nan used to have a sofa patterned like this. Humbling Samba red by Nick Liassides, on Flickr We rounded up the kids and headed back indoors to the upper level. This brought new wonders... mostly in just how brilliantly set-up the organisers of the show are with their kids zone. Mine are actually pretty well-behaved (usually) and reasonably in to cars (often) but there are limits even to their attention span. Thus the provision of an entire suite of rooms showing kiddie films, offering skipping ropes, giant Jenga and all sorts of diversions and best of all... five-way digital Scalextric GTR35 racing... was a stroke of genius. Mrs L7 was ready for a sit-down, what with her fascinating array of disabilities, so we left her minding the li'l uns and cleared off in the direction of the autojumble. Although, I have to say, I half-wished I was small enough to bluff my way into the queue for the Scalextric Scalextric van by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Scalextric tower by Nick Liassides, on Flickr The Boy was commendably philosophical about the fact his best finish was second whereas the li'l un (who's a girl, worse still) won her heat by a mile. You could tell it burned him though. The autojumble was rammed, hot and overwhelming. And not just because of the crush and the sheer, well, Belgian-ness of it all. Never fails to amaze me the prices people charge for... basically... tat. And you sometimes wonder about whether the price creates the demand or vice versa. Anyway, I wasn't really after much though Lewis managed to score the woodrim steering wheel he's been after, despite the fact we had to point out it's only acceptable to have a wooden steering wheel if you drive a boat. I shopped around carefully and managed to get a Wolfsburg emblem for less than half the price of the most expensive one I was quoted (which was £75, if you were wondering). I left with a pair of logo pedal rubbers (as mine are just plain), the emblem and some Hotwheels cars. And my wallet mostly un-raped purchases by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Back downstairs, there was a whole other hall we'd managed to miss so far with plenty of other groovy stuff. We watched an awning erection race (oooh, erection, snigger), we failed to get a free t-shirt from the t-shirt lobbers, we wandered round the autojumble again. Overall I had a great time, saw loads of great stuff and even the family enjoyed it. Which is always some kind of yardstick. Definitely be doing that one again And cos my old nan always told me to leave on a song, but the only song currently in my head is Ministry's Land of Rape and Honey, which doesn't really seem appropriate, I'll have to end on a high note instead. which can really only mean one thing. Brings back some memories of my time into Vdubs. I owned a '66 6 volt beetle. As a family we had VW's for years. Early and late Variants, a couple of fastbacks, crew cab bay window. I then had a number of water cooled Vw's, mk1 Polo,LHD mk1 golf LS couple of mk2 GTI's etc moved onto Audi after them and kind of lost my way for a while. I was at some of the early Bugjam and only recently gave away my collection of the first 35 Volksworld magazines. I would love another 66 beetle with a nice motor.

This has been and possibly always will be my favourite show of the year. The standard of the cars indoors gets higher and higher each year and the variety around the show is brilliant. You always see something new, exciting and down right bonkers. I just wish I could go back to when I first started going to it and buy up loads of what are now ridiculously expensive and rare parts... and a car or 2 to put them on.
I’ve waited many years for a write up from you about this and you didn’t let me down. So glad you came and enjoyed it with the family. Next year they’ll be 3 in the convoy... maybe more if we make any friends with like minded taste.
That blue oval on the flat bed was soooooo nice. I was just about £20k short to be able to buy it. One day (never might not gonna happen)

Nurrrr... what? Another Ministry song Sorry, being rather dense there Errrmm.. Jesus built my Volksrod? This has been and possibly always will be my favourite show of the year. The standard of the cars indoors gets higher and higher each year and the variety around the show is brilliant. It's a great show and I'm glad I let you nag me into going Couldn't believe, given how it's all in a nice neat self-contained venue, how far I ended up walking and how tired my feet were when I got home. Great day out, and nice not to have to drive to the other end of the country to do it! I’ve waited many years for a write up from you about this and you didn’t let me down. I do enjoy your show reports, they're always an entertaining read and have great pictures.

Not a VW guy (sorry) but really enjoyed the report and pics. Thanks. Heading off to the Manila Motor Show in a few minutes. Do not expect pics of this quality!

Nice selection of photos and great story-telling, I only hope I can keep 5 year old mini-minty entertained for a whole show walkaround and taking photos at some point when he’s older.
In terms of your coffee queuing and price frustration I can only recommend thermos as a solution. I think it was last year I realised I’d come of age enough to start taking a flask of coffee to car shows.
I even have one of suitable vintage to leave in the truck.

Minty, we do something similar for food. If you can't be bothered with making a picnic the night before, a Tesco meal deal will do nicely on the way to the show! £9 will do the three of us with those, or one of us for burger and chips!
Back to the show, the quality of the cars increases every year, wit the bar being raised all the time. Best of Show winner Lyndon said on another forum he worked every evening and weekend for four years building his car.

Which won Best of Show, Neil? As to the kids thing... I've been taking my lad to shows since he was under five. To the Pod and everything. He's always enjoyed it. My daughter is a bit less engaged but still enjoys being out and about with us no matter what's going on really. I think kids just like to be involved and so long as they get a bit of time to run around and an ice cream they'll pretty much tolerate any venue. Or maybe that's just mine And taking my own food...? nahh. Can't be arsed carrying it around with me all day

Some great pics here!
I was just thinking though, all of those cars that were inside I don't think I've ever really seen them at any other shows, so do they just for the most part sit in the owners garage for the other 363 days of the year?
The amount of time, effort, and £££ that goes into them, it's a shame that they're not seen more regularly.
There's only one of the regular cars at the show I see around, and that's in the owners garage on the way past to my place of work.
Let's see those shiny dubs more often people!

I drive mine almost every day. But then, it's never going to trouble a show. I'm not sure you can do both...
