Hi all, With the recent sale of my Escort I'm about ready to start my next project. I've been toying with the idea of transplanting the running gear from a Mazda RX8 into something cool and retro for a long while now. (with much inspiration from daan 's E21 thread) A few months ago I was trawling eBay like you do when I happened across an M.O.T failure. The price was within budget and within 48 hours I was on my way home with this: A 53 reg 231 6 speed with 70,000 or so on the clocks. Engine runs sweet and starts nicely hot or cold so fingers crossed. So now I had a donor car and nothing more to work with. A month or so later a friend of mine had his Orion written off in a rear end smash and replaced it with a mk1 Sierra. I'd originally toyed with the idea of buying a cheap (yeah right) Capri project and building it with the RX8 bits but the Sierra just looked right to me. I'd wanted a Sierra since forever anyway so a Sierra it had to be. Which brings me to this: Its an '83 2.0 GL 4 speed and its "quite" clean. I saw it on eBay in January and decided to watch it to see what it sold for. Later The lad who bought it stuck it up for sale on Facebook and I started to message him about it. Long story short, my Escort sold and I went over to Cleethorpes in the snow to collect. I plan on getting it in the garage and starting to strip it over the next week or so. I've already ordered wheels, tyres, coil overs and brakes. The plan is to use as much Mazda stuff as possible and try to keep the swap fairly simple. Will try to update often and maintain an actual build thread for once. A.J

That's it and a pinto in the rx8 it will be the most reliable rx8 ever We keep making the same joke, i'm sure it would confuse a few people. Be less thirsty for sure. Small progress today, managed to clear out the garage enough to get the Sierra in there and set about stripping the interior. Managed to get rid of a fair bit of weight already and still got rear washer gear, rear wiper and auto antenna to remove. Sierra's seem to be full of the really dense sound deadening stuff you can see round the rear arch tubs. Removed it all from round the transmission tunnel on my mates and weighed it at almost 20kg! Not bad when the stock kerb weight is quoted at 1115kg. overall i'm impressed with the condition, found 0 rust so far (touch wood). Early finish tomorrow so will get the rest of the interior out with a bit of luck and start removing stuff I wont be needing. A.J

Looks a decent shell looking into the boot, Be careful with the trim you remove if it's not going back in bits like the jack cover in the boot, you could sell that on to a cosworth licker

I'm just about over my rushing in and breaking everything phase. I've no real room to store the interior so it'll probably end up getting sold. She's going full race car so none of its any use to me. have to say that's a bit of a shame to take apart a mk1 sierra - must be really rare now

The bits I don't use will most likely find their way into others. They're getting rare, but not particularly valuable. A.J

I would hazard a guess at values starting to strengthen quite healthily for tidy early cars over the years to come. its a job to credit it now just far out there in styling terms when they were launched.

This sound like an idea that's so left field it borders on genius! Apparently the RX8 box is quite dimensionally similar to the Type-9, so you shouldn't have to touch the trans tunnel.

That was partly my inspiration. I know that people are using the RX8 box in a few older Fords in place of the type 9 so why not leave the Rotary engine attached? I was hoping to have posted more but progress has been slow, owing to work, house projects and collecting Shreddies 's Volvo from Liverpool. Not much to report in terms of car progress but I have received various bits in the mail. A Set of JOM Mk1 Focus coilovers which I'm led to believe are a direct fit on the front of a Sierra. A set of 240mm Vented discs and Yellowstuff pads from EBC (I'm keeping the stock 2.0 brakes for now as the car will be getting a lot lighter/lower/stickier tyres/etc. I will probably swap to the 887/888 calipers or similar in the future depending on how well it performs.) Said improved tyres. Toyo Proxes T1-Rs in 195 50 15 A set of Citroen C4 Cactus steelies (6.5j x 15 et20) Which I then painted in "wheel steel" from Simoniz Finish looks decent from a distance but is far from perfect. Turns out i'm fairly good at painting and fairly terrible at lacquering. Plan is to get the rest of the interior out tomorrow night and start thinking about pulling the Pinto out. Hopefully will have more to show this weekend. Cheers, A.J

Even without a Rotary swap this has all the hallmarks of a great project. It'll look sweet slammed on thise steels.

Managed to get the rest of the interior out over Easter. I knew from the previous owner that there had been a hole by the fuse box and that as a result the carpet had been wet. Feeling the carpet from above it seemed fairly dry but my gut told me the under carpet matting would be saturated. I was right. All in all not too bad really, there are a few small patches of surface rust but these are the two structural fails. Dug a lot of metal out with the flap disc and soaked everything in Jenolite as I was short on time. I have since cut around the rot and the metal looks good within just a few mm of the rusty area so I should have a decent base to plate it up. The actual seat mount visible in the pictures is solid. My plan is to lap weld a patch over this area and spot weld the mounting bracket to the new surface as per the factory process. I'm quite happy with the condition of the shell overall and think it will clean up quite nicely. Will update when the welder comes out. On a side note the interior is now in my way so it will be going up for sale very soon. A.J

This will be really cool. I hope it's going to get a stupid loud exhaust to make the most of that rotary!
