I got this idea from the cars you'd have sold thread. A strange topic but OTOH sometimes we all need reminding to like what we have and not hold back, albeit if it is costly from a monetary perspective. I still struggled with the monetary part for other reasons. House deposits aren't cheap after all. Anyway, which cars stand out for me? MGB Sebring ReplicaThis car was the result of 10 years of blood, sweat, heartache and tears. Me and my dad trying to do the car up on a shoestring didn't help. In the end I stopped giving a toss about the budget and TBH the car's progress was much faster. I'd previously moan at spending more than £5 on a switch or £50 on brake bits etc. Yes! It was spot on in the end however, except two things. The paintwork I did at home with the help of a training painter ; it was rattlecanned but the paint was too thin to wet sand. A £2-3k paintjob would have sorted that car out but I couldn't bear to put that towards it, especially when a good MGB back then was a £4k car, albeit not a Sebring'd car. The engine need RV8 power too, which I should have done! For years I was semi-glad to be rid of it; it did eventually get finished after all by an MG Specialist! Now I do miss it; it was my very first car however. Porsche 944 TurboThis car came to me as the doctor ordered. KWv3 suspension on M030 ARBs, Cup 1 wheels on Michelin PS2s, LR Stage 1 intercooler, an unknown chip and a Wortec Exhaust system. I really did fancy putting on a dual port wastgate with an EBC of sort. I'd be over the 300BHP barrier but at £1.2k hardly a cheap exercise! It would have made a good reason to keep the car however! Triumph StagAs much as I liked that car, it had to go. It was a bad buy from the off even if it was cheap and it swallowed time and money like a lady of the night did after blowing her money on snow! I did fancy finishing off the interior, sorting out a better gear linkage with maybe a B&M like Bruce here did. Oh, and some decent dampers and tyres which it needed. Mazda MX-5The MX-5? Turbo power, and maybe a Mohair roof with a glass panel to replace the vinyl item; it's always a faff telling your mates to be careful of the rear plastic screen and you taking your time on it too! That leaves the Escort RS TurboIf I had that car, assuming it wouldn't get stolen from me, it would have been on EFI now I suspect. Maybe a dry sump kit to further help breathing and potentially power! The rest of it was there however! So, that's me. What about the rest of you folks?

I've been guilty in the past of selling things on because I resented spending too much on them for bits I couldnt do myself, and then regretted it, and wished i'd just spent the money and got more enjoyment out of it.
My last e23 BMW being a prime example, I wanted it on air suspension, but I never got round to buying it/ having it made, and I sold the car, but i'd have probably still had it as my daily if i'd coughed up.
Wanted to build a 2.3 stroker and uprated gearbox for my VW type 3, sold it, never did it, regret that a bit too.
Determined not to do the same to my latest 1950 Ford, this is a keeper (like all the keepers before it lol) but I'm not worrying about the resale value etc... and i'm building it the way I want, sod the trends, its gonna be a car for me, and if someone else likes it and ever wants to buy it then so be it. But i'm not gonna let money get in the way, i'll save up, i'll sell and trade and learn new skills to get it how I want

Still want to put an Integra 1.8 twin-cam in my '79 accord. Mk1 Cortina coupe, with longer rear deck, sloped windscreens for a smaller, lower roofline. Possibly with mk3 rear-roof section. On a parts car that already had it's roof hacked off.

I have 3 car's in my head atm, I currently own 3 car's & only one of them is on the list lol. Family Wagon:- Current Golf Plus: Drop in all the running gear from a mk5 R32 or A3 2.0tfsi Quatro - including the haldex system Mk5 Gti interior Low Nice wheels Facelift bumpers Painted in Nato green Think this but with better wheels and it being a 5dr plus lol My Daily:- C4 Cactus 1.2 THP (110bhp): Low (on either coilovers or air) Rota Grid's/Advan 3 spokes More power from either the 1.2 or a 1.6THP 308 engine (270bhp) & any supporting mods Like this but probably white with black plastics/wheels & different wheels Show car/weekend toy:- Base model mk3 Golf Vento Front mk1 Twingo panoramic sunroof Low Nice wheels 16/17's Painted in a 90's Pastel colour US short plate boot lid Full Civic 1.3 IMA (hybrid) drivetrain Full light grey tweed interior with maybe mk4 golf recaro seats. Like this, but different colour Thats this months dream builds, reality is I cant afford to buy any of them atm lol Plus I should probably get the mk2 working and enjoy it for a bit before I replace it

An, as yet, unrealised ambition is to shoehorn the Jag V12 into a Mk X, (which has been done).

I quite fancy taking a v12 out of a jag & putting an 1100 x flow in, with a single down draught carb. Not a sleeper, more of an awaker.

I really want a big spec C16XE for my Astra, it might happen one day but it never seems to be that day. I really wanted to turn my Sierra estate into a Saph Cosworth rep, had the perfect image in my head, sadly after too much right foot and not enough talent it just being Sierra shaped would have been enough for me

I have sometimes dreamed of putting a big block Ford V8, perhaps a 429 or 460, into an EA or EB Falcon GL wagon, while retaining the original column change, bench seat practicality, to create a torque monster tow car that looks like just another old coon but sounds sweeter and has plenty of boogie when required.

I had a 72 XY Fairmont wagon for a number of years, even with the stock 351 it was a lotta fun! Go for Gold! Steve

A colleague has an XD taxi pack sedan. It was a 4.1 crossflow and still has all the original badging including the AlloyHeadII badges on the wings but it runs a 302 with 289 heads. Goes very hard.

The one build I've been planning for years now is a restomod Forward Control Land Rover. Details have changed a bit, but the basic idea is a fairly standard looking truck with the running gear from a newer model, and after the resounding success of the BMW M52 in my 110, it would be the engine of choice, especially as so many had their original six cylinder engines pulled in favour of some (by today's standards) rather awful diesel conversions. Hopefully before I'm 40...

The Cortina was supposed to be my big project. The one I would have forever etc. However it became a bit of a millstone. So although I miss the idea of it, I don't miss actually having it. My plans for it were extensive. New front subframe with adjustabe front suspension arms, uprated brakes and 4x100 Hubs Rear IRS from an MX5 2.3 16v i4 with RS2000 head and Kent Reground Cams, ITBs and aftermarket management. (Hoping for 200hp) 6 speed RX8 Gearbox. Bodywork wise very clean and tidy, standard colours, subtely wider arches ( scaryoldcortina had a cunning plan for that). Mk4 Grill. Rota RKR 15x8 front and 15x9 rear with chunky tyres. Interior would be Recaro's trimmed in black leather with centre panels in standard grey Carousel Cloth. I would never have got it done! The Polo.20180220_155204 by Tom Horn, on Flickr Full body resto, new rear panel, boot floor, both rear quarters and sills, doors and front slam panel. Respray in Tornado Red, Coupe S Arch trims and skirts Gaz Coilovers, PPP Stage 2 Subframe, Polybush everything. GT/G40 Rear beam with custom ARB. 256mm front brakes, Polo GTI rear Disks, 22mm Master Cylinder Staggered 14x7 and 8 RSL Cults. High Compression Hybrid 1.6 AFH on ITBS with Schrick Cams. 8p Gearbox with LSD and short shift. Interior, much the same as Cortina, Recaro's retrimmed in black leather and original Fox material centres, Audioscape Doorpods and decent speakers. Hopefully the Polo will get a pared-down version of the above over time. Tom

I had to look up what "OTOH" meant Chas... Dream plans for current or past project cars eh? Well.... I did try fit a straight 6 in the 944 - I had the engine fitted but at that stage was still light on the whole amateur mechanic confidence thing and couldn't find someone local to help with a bell housing adapter. I did find that the engine I chose kinda fitted perfectly like Porsche had tried it themselves...seeing as though they had actually help develop it it was kinda keeping it in the family. I did get as far as dropping it in though... It would've needed a bulge on the bonnet but otherwise it would've looked standard. In the end I decided to 16v the car amongst other things and had a blast personalising it. You've seen TheHoff and it's pretty much just where it needs to be. Sounds brilliant and goes extremely well when it's not locked up. Now the PT - Preston is where I want it bar air ride but I ache to try something new after everything I've learned. Should Preston go or should it stay I wonder... As for Project Beach Hut - that turned out very well, was a joy to work on, and then I sold it because it wasn't four wheel drive, oh, and importantly it didn't have seatbelts for the kids. But there's still something I wanted to do that's burning a hole in my brain. I just need the right donor (technically parked on my driveway but too good to break although worth pittance) and a large workshop that can be my playground for a year while I measure thrice and weld a couple of times... There's been lots of others from Impreza to pickup trucks but changing alloys and making a few personalisations doesn't qualify for me anymore. Now the ones I regret selling - Project Goldie Hawn the 924, that was a brilliant little car and gave me no real grief and was sold to make way for the Land Rover, which actually wasn't a bad thing in itself as it's taken the family all over southern Europe the past few summers...but I miss the pure unadulterated joy of the 924. And before all of those it was what I consider was my first proper project car - remember the 306 Cabriolets by Pininfarina? Probably one of the most well proportioned bodies of all time IMHO. I sold that because I didn't understand that I could keep two cars, one on classic car insurance and another on normal...thanks to a lying insurance company telephone jockey. Live and learn. And now there's RudyProject GTi - that's going to be a straight resto much like the 924 was but that will go to when complete to make way for something else much more custom that is brewing...I have an itch that I must scratch. Nice thread idea ChasR

I've always wanted to put a big power big diesel in the back of an old van, think OM606 in a early 90's transporter.

Nice idea!
I always move on rather see something to the end, there’s just too many cars I want to drive/own!
MX5 - would have loved to Rotrex supercharge it, buy some proper Watanabe wheels and throw some prope JDM parts at it. Maybe even a Pitcrew conversion...
Dolomite Sprint - Stick the above MX5 engine in the Dolomite, and then somehow both slam it and make it handle properly. Somewhere between how mine looked and how the ones currently being thrown around Goodwood drive.
My current Integra - would love to rebuild the current B18 engine which high-compression parts, maybe get another 20-30bhp and higher revs. Then throw the whole catalogue of Spoon parts at it and win all the JDM points

My first car was a leaf green nova saloon. Looks good now, but it wasnt the real car of choice for a 17 year old back in 97. What i always wanted to do was take this Crossed with the running gear of one of these. I've done some preliminary checks and it'll fit with about 50 - 75mm arch extensions either side. There's someone on one of the nova forums doing a van like this, although maybe not the same way I would. I've got too many things to finish / start / finish but its on my list of projects if I can get the time.

Good to see a few ideas and what they were and are! Keep 'em coming . Nice idea! I always move on rather see something to the end, there’s just too many cars I want to drive/own! There are still plenty of cars I want to own! However, I am missing a couple of the old 'uns! The values of 944s now haven't helped there in the slightest. Speaking of which, the M3 would have the following if I didn't go too crazy! -CSL airbox; they don't come cheap! They do sound lovely. -CSL front disc brakes When I say it like that it doesn't sound too extortionate! Hmmm....
