What is classed as 'Well Priced' can you add some boundaries, couple of grand etc
I will kick of with Mercedes W210 430 and E55, CLK 430 W208, Best of British XJR has to be in here then the Japanese Contingent of the Lexus LS400

Sleepers as such are built not bought so pretty much anything has potential. It depends what you want to do.
A sleeper is a care which attracts no attention rather than a car that is or was a fast or souped up car to begin with.
I.e base model Sierra with cosworth running gear as a example.

Hmm, I may not have worded this the best, I maybe should have said for sub 3k
And come fitted with an engine with great tuning potential that can handle having the boost cranked up with minimal modifications
The Volvo 2.3 hpt engine for example, which I believe come with forged internals?

94-98 Saab 9000 . I made 490 hp with no issues on a stock 2.0 engine with a fresh headgasket and bolts . Cast t3 flanged exhaust manifold from an early pre gm 9000 with a Holset hx35 turbo and 630cc injectors and a £90 can USB programming lead to use the free t5suite mapping software . Not everyone's cup of tea but I doubt there are many others that can make that power for under £1500

Photobucket had all the pics on it but it was built for the Ppc £999 challenge but I went over budget so came dead last in the handling trial so I didn't get in the running but monstered everything on the strip running 13.2 at 121 mph with a fully loaded 1500kg car beating that years winner in a gt4 celica by nearly a second . £350 Sachs race clutch and a new ignition cassette broke the budget or it would have sneaked under the limit as the car was an mot failure for £100

Photobucket had all the pics on it but it was built for the Ppc £999 challenge but I went over budget so came dead last in the handling trial so I didn't get in the running but monstered everything on the strip running 13.2 at 121 mph with a fully loaded 1500kg car beating that years winner in a gt4 celica by nearly a second . £350 Sachs race clutch and a new ignition cassette broke the budget or it would have sneaked under the limit as the car was an mot failure for £100 That's quite the budget build! I love cars like that, I bet it was some great fun on the motorway with those in new BMs and Audi's 😎😎 Saab sounds ace! I was gonna suggest anything running a VW 20vT, these are quite tuneable. From 70- silly it was hysterical , had a tartan blanket and national trust stickers in the back window . Finally broke a ring Land with a vgt 531 Holset at 476whp so around 530-540 crank and the car got broken up for the parts to fit a 234 in the back of my reliant kitten

By throwing a gearbox seal and flooding the clutch with oil. Was easier to just spend £800 on buying an identical car. |

Maulal pump and a huge turbo 500brake from 150... Is this the one the use as the 'super turbodiesel' Is it really just a big turbo and a modified pump to take them up to the big power, or is there a lot of engine work people don't talk about? |

VAG 20VTs are OK but I understand their internals don't like going much beyond 250BHP without changing pistons etc. But bang for the buck there are cheap cars to have with that engine and many models to choose from. These include the Golf GTi, Octavia vRS, Audi TT, Audi S3 etc. Volvo 850 T5s are always a good shout. Finding a clean car is harder these days however IME. The engines are tough and the mods well documented. With an auto however the ceiling seems to be around 270BHP in terms of tuning. Speaking of Volvo 850s I will sound like an old record but the Mondeo MkIV can "just" be had for £3k. The 2.5Ts are basically a Mondeo with the Focus ST engine. That means a remap will take you to 250BHP without breaking into a sweat. It also means that a few well chosen mods (exhaust/downpipe, intercooler, better injectors etc. etc.) will take you to north of 300BHP. Quite a few ST owners have taken this well trodden path. However, over 250BHP gets expensive. Besides the intercooler, injectors etc. building up the price the clutch becomes a weak point ; a Focus RS clutch gets around this. They are a nice balanced drive too. BMW M52s could be considered in non TU specification. An intake manifold and a chip will release around another 20-30BHP from a 2.8. MX-5s as well can be considered. While a turbo kit thought out is around £2k+ you get 250BHP in something the size of a fag packet. Oh, and great handling. Or you could simply get a cool looking retro and look into dropping in a Lexus engine. OK it's never that easy but that's Retro Rides  . |

Yeah I had heard that, but as you say, a lot of models to choose from and they're not expensive to buy in the first place either. I would love something retro with a lexus engine dropped into it. My issue is, I have a mk2 golf vr6 Turbo just now, but i'm one of these people that love their car, but seem to get enjoyment/excitement out of getting something new (AND I never know what i want, i change my mind like weather!!). So i've been considering something to replace it with, I just can't decide what, I have even been considering something just a little bit newer for a while saving for a house. I have a fabia VRS before, which although modern, was a great daily with the PD130 in it.... |

I don't know whether it's still the case price-wise but the rover tomcat turbo was always a good bhp per £ ratio.

I do like a Tomcat Turbo. A good one is now £3.5k. The issue? Without mixing and matching now hard-to-source parts or buying forged items they don't like much above 12PSi without the pistons shattering. Sourcing spares is now harder ; Rimmers are running out of panels which is not ideal on a car known for rust. A friend of mine has a 216i with a noisy 'box. Even with it being a Honda based item he is struggling to find another one. The other way is to do what jimbo200sx has done. It's not very easy or cheap either to do right. But it does get the looks. Back to the OP I know what you mean. The grass is always greener.... |
