I've just bought a convertible so reading your thread for ideas. Is your steering rack manual? I've read about removing the power steering pump & lines & fitting a manual rack. Where have you been sourcing parts? I'd like to replace suspension joints & bushes, brake lines etc. My chassis is luckily as clean as yours so I'm inspired to strip it & underseal everything.

The steering rack on my good shell is a power steering one. But I have a manual one that I'm planning to fit. Mainly to clean up the engine bay, its possible in the future I may retrofit a remote electric PS pump from an MR2 MK3 Roadster. Removing the steering rack is a relatively easy job, 6 bolts hold it onto the subframe, however manual racks are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony sh*t so it would be easier to de-power your existing one. Parts you pretty much have to go to America. I've yet to try Mazda and see if they can get them, but I suspect not. Unfortunately this means paying VAT, so even if they look cheap. Add 20%. www.rockauto.comwww.mazdatrix.com/index.htmwww.atkinsrotary.com/store/Are good all around sources. For bushes, this look quite good, although I've not used them yet. www.j-auto.net/

My FC has an electric aerial. To make it work you just ground the wire that extends it.
Ian: If i was going for a track car I wouldn't hesitate. But for a street car I'll always go for rubber bushes if possible, they're so much better day to day and IMO on track days its unlikely the average driver will lose time due to the bushes.

varies from car to car... I've never poly'd a FC so I can't comment but I can say that on a RX7 FB the poly bushes are a vast improvement over OEM rubber on a road car......... change from rubber to poly on a Jag or a Spitfire though and it'll ruin the ride on a road car.... some cars it suits, others it doesn't.

Energy Suspension totally transformed my 1st Gen. Can't recommend them highly enough. Much less blancmange-y but not stupidly hard and blood-passing kidney pulverising. Spot on

Ah cool, I asked because mine had been working fine but has now decided to stop retracting ¬¬ So I may be on the lookout for a spare unit to just swap in, handy to know both the coupe and vert aerials seem the same

Think I may give the energy suspension a go then. Can always go back to rubber if it doesn't work out.
To all the RX7 people on here (all 3 of you or whatever!). My donor car will be shortly going to the big scrapheap in the sky. And I've kept a lot of parts as spares for myself. If there's anything you want in particular (odd trim bits etc) let me know and I'll put em aside for you.
The only stuff I'm wanting money for (to recoup costs a little) is the big stuff. Anything minor just give me the postage and providing I don't need it you can have it.

So first update in who knows how long. I've been flat out with the boat project, the house project and the sitting on my project. But NO MORE! Its time to kick this projects metaphorical in and get some progress at last. Over the summer I minced about doing the odd bits, like painting the diff, rear subframe and suspension arms and painting the fuel tank inspection plates. Next up I stripped everything from the engine bay apart from the loom. (Which I wanted to strip but apparently requires removing the dashboard, thanks Mazda. Then I had a cup of tea while it rained. #englishproblems Some overnight parts from America came. And by overnight I mean it took nearly a month plus exorbitant customs charges before I could get my hands on them. Its new shocks / top mounts / bump stops etc. KYB AGX Adjustable. Painted the front subframe with epoxy mastic. Well one side of it, I ended up having to put it back in so I had somewhere else to jack the car up. I also had to get the car up higher for the next part. Next, over a period of days I finally finished stripping the rest of the underseal out from under the car, it was the worst car job I've ever done, I was laid on my back with and angle grinder getting covered in that bitumen underseal, flying bits of wire from the grinding wheel and paint dust. I still don't feel clean again yet! I'm about 90% done. I have to do the forward wheel wells and some areas around the rear jack stands, but its just a couple of hours work. I've broken the back of it. All I have to do now is to work out how to get the floor pan straight again. I've tried a block of wood and lump hammer to no effect, the crushed rails are now supporting it in its current position, if anyone has some advice I'd love to hear it!

Great project I really like these.
Top effort with the wire brushing, really good seeing it all back to bare metal. I've done this in localised areas on underbodies and that can be enough of a pain... How long did it take to do the whole lot?

Probably about a week, but that's only a few hours a day, I couldn't really stand doing much more than that.
Peace of mind to see no rust under the car, plus I can do the job properly and cover the bare steel with epoxy.
