G'day guys and gals! I'm Jelmer from the Netherlands and my Retro ride is a 1983 Datsun Laurel C31. I bought it this summer and the previous owner realy trashed it. He didn't maintain it, used it a lot offroad and on top of it he crashed it! Than it sat for a year and this is where I bought it. This is where I found out that C31's are very, very rare these days! I happend to find 2 wings in Belgium, a new OEM bumper in Holland and a new headlight off Ebay from Colombia! It also had a hickup when accelerating out of a corner so I decided to give the carb a rebuild. Took it apart, cleaned it in my ultra sonic cleaner and put it together again with fresh gaskets, needles and all that. Adjusted it to factory spec and it drove perfect! Cold start was great now with a working choke! But after driving it for a while the need for more power arise! My previous hobby car was a BMW E28 where I put in a '93 M5 engine with 340Hp so 113Hp was not very satifiyng! A friend of mine did a lot of JDM engines and he had a VG30DET sitting for a while. This is a single turbo 3.0 V6 24v from the Nissan Chima or Cedric/Gloria.

I measured and it "should"fit! I put a 300zx twin turbo gearbox in the car to mock everything up. I have to run the engine pretty much in the middle of the bay because otherwise the turbo hits the steeringbox. This is not a problem because now I can use the stock sump and stock 300zx shifter bracket and linkage. A friend of mine has a lot of JDM engines and gearboxes and this is where I went shopping for a alternator and powersteering pump. I got the alternator brackets of a VG30DETT and the powersteering pump of a VG30E from a Terrano 1 but the brackets for it from the DETT again. I took some extra tensioners and brackets just in case. Back at home I tried them and it worked out great. I just need to change the front damper/pulley to the DETT one and I'm set. A quick look in a stash of Patrol parts got me a master cilinder out of a Patrol 160. This has the front hardline outlet on top of the cilinder so that problem is solved! Bonus is that it bolts right up to the vacuum booster and it is bigger which helps with the future brake upgrade. These are hard to come by but I bought this in Japan. It was only used to test the break away and than stored on the shelf with more LSD's. I thought about a S13 rearend swap but this is way more easy and these axles can handle 450+ HP on drag slicks so plenty strong. IMG_20170102_193549027 by Jelmer Eppinga, on Flickr A couple of weeks ago I took the tank out to look how to deal with the fuel delivery. I needed bigger lines for sure and my plan was to make a Walbro work in the stock tank. Unfortunately the tank was pretty rusted and I'm sure I would discover holes in it when I would wire brush it so a new tank was needed. I took a look ate C32 tanks and these look to have the same shape. So I got a tank from a C32 diesel and it is indeed almost the same exept that these have a way bigger pickup/fuel level lever hole so it wil be very easy to put the Walbro in this tank. The C31 was carburated so it didn't have a pickup like the C32. Some more action on the C31. I got the stock C31 powersteering line back in and the high pressure line bolted right up to the pump. These oldschool Nissans all have the resevoir on top of the pump but this pump has a remote resevoir so that is what I will use. I got one from a Patrol Y60. IMG_20170118_202153147 by Jelmer Eppinga, on Flickr The cooling is getting together too. The outlet for the top hose needs a small piece welded to it s that the hose will reach it. The bottom one needs a join pipe to connect 2 hoses. IMG_20170130_193003201 by Jelmer Eppinga, on Flickr Another job done is the Walbro install. I got a S13 fuel sender unit in a used this instead of the C32 one because it has two 8mm lines instead of one 8mm and a 6mm return line. After some measuring, cutting, fabricating and soldering it fits. I was out of hose clamps but I will add another one. This way It reads correct and it is the easyest way to do so.

Thanks! Yesterday I test fitted the Patrol MC. It clears everything and bolts richt up to the booster! Big plus is the larger diameter. Next week the rebuild kit for it comes in from the US. They are the same kit for the Nissan Van C22 but Nissan bought these vans all back in the USA because they cought on fire. So Rock auto never sells any parts for it and the rebuild kit was only € 2,20! Shipping was €10,15 but still a bargain! Looks great I think!
