So now its on the road I’m on with the niggles. My central locking has never worked and I suspected my pump was at fault all along, turns out not so. I took the drivers door card off and remembered it used to have remote locking. It appeared the original actuator had been replaced by one with a motor so the key didn’t have to be in the door. I want it back to standard so I put power straight to the signal wires for the pump, and it locked/unlocked everything apart from the drivers door. Great success. So I needed to see why it wasn’t sending a signal. I prised apart said aftermarket actuator, removed the gear from the motor and tested the microswitch. Duff! Ordered a microswitch off ebay for £1.50, which arrived today. So I’ve exercised my poor soldering skills... Fitted it back into the housing, tested it and all locks worked 👍🏻 So i glued the housing back together, refitted it to the car and tested again before putting the door card back on. So now the central locking is fixed for the grand total of £1.50 🙌

Well today didn’t go to plan. Get an early finish as usual on a Friday to go get the daughter, this time I tbought she’d appreciate a ride in the golf now its on the road. So I get home, pull the golf out the garage and proceed to Lincoln via the back road. Get 2/3rds the way of the 26 mile drive, do a cheeky overtake at 70mph+ then BANG Much swearing and poo came out... Managed to get it back down and semi latched then drove back home at 40mph in a foul mood. Jumped in the 530d and continued my mission. Got home and assessed it better... So bonnet, ruined. Roof, dented. Saving grace apart from not dying? My new windscreen survived. But I’m not gonna lie, after an 18 month build and a week on the road I’m devastated 😔

That's gutting! I seen this on Facebook earlier and thought surely it can't be the same one I'm gutted for you! But I'm sure someone will have a bonnet, and worst case, put up with the roof for the rest of the year a d get your enjoyment out of it until winter again!

As you’ll have seen I’m after another bonnet, I doubt I’ll get one in bbm but anything will do right now 😔

Dent can be pushed/pulled out mate- doesn't look too bad.
Above all you're ok man, same old bullsh!t saying but it could have been a lot worse with you and/or other people injured.

Well if nothing else I proved the brakes are good 😂 hopefully be picking up a bonnet today, not the right colour but at least it’ll shut! I think I’ve found the cause...
I’ve taken the bonnet and grille off, the catch has dropped down, caused by me slamming the bonnet... and cutting the brace off the slam panel when I had the intercooler at the bottom. So that brace needs welding back on. Oh and one bonnet hinge is ruined, I can probably fix it, but I’ve no idea how to remove it!

Dent man will sort your roof out, paint doesn't look broken? To take the bonnet hinge off its two nuts on the inner wing, so you'll beed to take your wing off to get to them properly, usually have some sealant over them so hard to access. Some I've seen have studs and some bolts the way through, so you might have the nuts on the rain tray side to get at?

I took the hinge off from inside the scuttle, its just a spring clip 👍🏻 I’ve welded the part of the slam panel Id cut off back on so thats got its rigidity back, also picked up a bonnet and brushed on some hammerite black... which will be a lot better than the green it was 😂

Glad you've got a bonnet, and I know the issue you had with removing the bracing. I had done the same for my intercooler, I actually ended up fitting bonnet pins, luckily mine didn't come up when driving, but it was starting to get very loose towards the end

I had it on good authority you couldn’t use a 4 lamp grille with the inter cooler up top, hence me chopping it about... well they were wrong 😂 but I’ve paid the price for chopping it. Well I hope thats what caused it anyway

Ah good, as removing the mounting part is a pita Still can't get over that windscreen! Lucky, you thought about fitting a safety wire? Not sure the correct term for them, stops the bonnet flying completely up and you quick release it when you open the normal latch

That sir, is an excellent idea! I’d rather that than bonnet pins

I`m pretty sure I have a bonnet. It`s green so would need painting.
I`ll be at Blyton next Saturday, I can bring it with me if you want it. ? Let me dig out some photos.
A good dent removal guy should be able to sort the roof.
## ah, just seen you`ve got one already#

Cheers for that mate, but yea I picked up a green one yesterday, which is now covered in hammerites finest brush on black 😂
Gutted I’m at a wedding next Saturday, otherwise I’d pop down to have a nosey (and a ride in it 👀)

And we’re back in the game But I’m far from happy. Its ripped the hinge brackets from the inner wings which is a big enough fix as it is, never mind trying to get the bonnet to sit right with it. I’ve had to knock up some bonnet raisers, but the corners still sit 10mm lower than the scuttle. I had no intention with this one, but true to form I’m feeling very much like selling this now its done. Just feeling very disheartened. Now the slam panel has its rigidity back the bonnet feels very secure, but I’ve put a trailer snatch cable on it just in case!

Chin up, man....glad for it not being worse and all that. The new bonnet looks the part, and most of us would not see the little misalignment had you not pointed it out....back in the game is good!
I do feel your pain, though....last year my pick up truck just would not cooperate and its charging problems did not get fixed until AFTER we got back from a summer trip that I had planned to use the truck for....ah well...such is life, right?
