On another thread here, it was suggested recently that it would be interesting to find the oldest active member of the forum (if they're not too embarassed to own up to it) and what they lusted after in the way of new cars when they were young. To that I would also add, "what did you actually buy for your first car?"
I thought it would be better to give the question it's own thread, rather than cluttering someone elses with irrelevancies, so here it is!
I will go first and if I can find any pics from that far back, i'll scan them and get them up!
I will be 62 next week (born May 1954) and the car I lusted after as a 16 year old apprentice in a Triumph dealership was the mighty GT6. What I actually bought (once I'd fallen off my 650BSA and nearly killed myself) was a 1956 MG Magnette ZA.
Steve
PS, I still wear my baseball cap with pride (it keeps the rain off the bald patch) but not back to front!

51.5 So a way to go - My object of desire when riding around on my O'Brien Panther was, and still is an early 70's 427 Corvette Stingray. The first car I bought myself after spending a couple of years melting the pistons of Kawasaki KH 2-strokes was a 67' Singer Chamois Coupe.

Andy Some good choices there, apart from the Kamikaze death traps (remember the early Bridgestone tyres they used to come with?) I thought I was the only one left who'd even heard of a Panther, let alone owned one! Steve

My lust after car was the Mk 1 Escort Mexico or the tri Chevy,s
I did own a Mex but was in my 30,s married and along came my Daughter and off went the Mex for next to no money, sadness and joy all in one go.
When i was 17 i bought a Consul Capri, see I had taste even when I was young.

But my very first car was a Vauxhall Viva 2 door with a mighty 1200 engine along with fur interior, even had my first accident in her. Learnt a lot with that car both mechanically and physically if you know what i mean lol.

I've just turned 50, as a kid I was always mad on Jags / Daimlers as well as Triumphs, Rovers, etc. The bigger the better so had a thing for Cadillacs, Lincolns & other Yank Tanks but Jags were always number one. I'd pore over magazines & books drooling over write ups of XK's, XJ's & E-Type's, (although I never really 'got' the XJ-S). I remember being at a car show when I was about 14 & peering in through the windows of a 420G Limousine with division, acres of walnut, drinks cabinet, TV, telephone, picnic tables, etc. and thinking that it was the most perfect of these incredible machines. I knew I had to have one when I was older. This was reinforced about a year later when I saw the most incredible concours Mark X in a Bristol car show, Black with wicker effect below the coachline, it was elevated above mirrors to enable everyone to admire the underside. At 18 I passed my test & had a S1 Stag, a S1 XJ6 4.2L, a S2 XJ6 4.2L lwb, a Vanden Plas Princess, a Rover P6 3.5L, a Rover P5B Coupe, and finally the Mark X I'd always craved, 3.8L in powder blue. Driving it was an ecstatic experience, the car owned the road wherever I drove and for a fat old hoss could shift when I needed to get somewhere in a rush. The only slight downer was a fuel consumption of about 6mpg when you stamped on the snarl pedal. In between times, I'd taken on a Mk VI Spit, my Grandfather's old Rover P6 2000, an SD1 V8, a S2 Stag and a S1 Daimler Sovereign (XJ) but had lost some of my storage. I'd developed a hectic social life which didn't leave me as much time as I needed for tinkering with cars, I had to reluctantly part with my treasured Mk X as it was deteriorating more rapidly than I could fix it. I've seen an article about a chap who converted his Mk X to Jag V12 power, this is something I'd love to emulate in the future if the chance ever presents itself.

59 this year but only thing I lust after now is vehicles. To be honest never lusted after the fairer sex even when younger (met wife when 16 !). Today find myself "lusting" after either a ZA/ZB Magnette or Austin Devon/Dorset/Somerset/A40/A50/A55.

89!! well that's how I am feeling at the moment. It's Saturday night, worked all day and now I am 89! But in the real world I am 49.
Mum and dad had a Cortina MK1. I always wanted one. About 10 years ago I found one and restored it. After I got it on the road I got bored with it very quickly and sold it within a year. Dream is now gone. Growing up in the 70's and 80's cars of that period cars I like most. I have a preference for every day kind of cars. I know a Lamborghini Countach is uber cool but a clean BMW 2002 or a VW fast back, Citroen GS or Volvo 240 is what I like most.
I see here many cars I would that I normally would not even look at but because of the dedication and love of the owner you could only admire a car like that. I mean look at the Zastava on this forum. I normally would not even look at a Yugo but that one is supa cool. There are a fair few cars on here like that.
Okay that was me babbeling on....
Cheers

I'll be 46 this year. When I was young, all I ever wanted was a General Lee replica and a mk2 Lotus Cortina. Never had either!
1st car, was a Matt black 105E Anglia with Lotus Steels and a 1500gt engine from a cortina in it. Loved that car!

I'm 57, as a teenager had my bedroom walls covered in Custom Car centre spreads and wanted a 69 Camaro, probably influenced by the Corgi model. Later it was a TR7 I wanted and I've always wanted an Aston Martin.
First car, my mum's Renault R8 followed by a Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible.

I turned 50 in December. I remember the lamborghini poster when I was growing up but they don't float my boat.
The car I really wanted was the '57 Chevy bel air Nomad. I still have a soft spot for the Nomad but they are well out of my price range now.
I then took a liking for small cars and my first was a mk1 mini.
In the intervening years I've had a few Minis,Imps,GTM Coupe,mx5,Midget etc etc.

Turn 60 next month. As a kid my parents has a florist business in Salford so the Jaguar MkII and Daimler 250 were the cars I lusted after. They were all used (as private vehicles) by funeral directors! Had the ubiquitous Mini at 17, but then my cousin picked me up one day in her new motor...the cow It took me two years to save the 250 quid mine cost, plus the horrendous insurance. But loved every second I had it. Never did own a Jag and given what they cost here, probably never will. But who knows...

I know this is kind of cheating because it isn't me, but there is a member in the VW Club of SA who has had the same car for over 50 years. It was his first car, a square-window VW Beetle bought brand new in late 1957 (they had just launched) when he was 21. As far as I know he is still driving it! The only other car he ever bought was a mid-'70s VW Microbus for his wife, which was also brand new. They still have both.
