54 at the moment. It's going to be frustrating ticking the 55 - 64 box on surveys. Still about 32 in my head. Came home to tell my mum 'I seem to have bought a car' at the age of 14. That's an expression which has served me well over the years. It was a 1961 Consul mk 2 for £35. Used to do the spannering on my dads cars from about 10 yrs old. Got an Elora socket set for my 11th birthday and taught myself by reading Car Mechanics and climbing over stacked cars in the scrapyards of Leicester.
Dream car was/is a Citroen SM. The one I wish I never sold? A 1968 Cortina Savage Estate, Alpina Green, chrome Rostyles. Oh, and a 1971 998 Imp Sport.
The ones I wish I could have rescued? A Fiat 2300 coupe and an estate both abandoned on a car park in Oadby in around 1971.
The ones that made an early impression? The Head Teacher at my infant school ran Mk2 Jags. Mrs Fryer - she wasn't more than 5 feet tall, bizarre sight.

At 42 and 3/4 I can't really remember what was the dream-mobile, I suspect the A-Team wagon would have been up there, loved that show. When it came down to it I had a brief dalliance with a Honda CB100 (two wheels are not for me it would seem)I strangely settled on a battered Bedford/Vauxhall Astravan with hammerited and carpeted interior...nice.

55 - wanted a Triumph Spitfire 1500 (still do) ended up with a Triumph 1500 fwd
Been through various Minis, Mk 1&2&3 Escorts plus a Mk 2 van, Marinas, Allegro (the shame) Mk 1 Fiesta, a whole bunch of Cavaliers of various versions, and a load of other stuff at odd times.

Not my first car by a couple of dozen, this was a circa 1974 project of mine, a 61 Consul 375 with Essex 3l V6. The local smartasses said it couldn't be done, so of course I had to have a go......... I know I have a pic somewhere of me with the ZA (and more hair than than anyone would believe) just need to find it! There is another object of my lust which predates even the GT6, that being the '66 Pontiac GTO, I had a slot car model of one when I was 12 and very successful it was too! I've not given up hope on that one, but would probably have to accept a cloned Tempest or Le Mans.

On another thread here, it was suggested recently that it would be interesting to find the oldest active member of the forum (if they're not too embarassed to own up to it) and what they lusted after in the way of new cars when they were young. To that I would also add, "what did you actually buy for your first car?" I thought it would be better to give the question it's own thread, rather than cluttering someone elses with irrelevancies, so here it is! I will go first and if I can find any pics from that far back, i'll scan them and get them up! I will be 62 next week (born May 1954) and the car I lusted after as a 16 year old apprentice in a Triumph dealership was the mighty GT6. What I actually bought (once I'd fallen off my 650BSA and nearly killed myself) was a 1956 MG Magnette ZA. Steve PS, I still wear my baseball cap with pride (it keeps the rain off the bald patch) but not back to front! When you think of the era into which the GT6 was born, it was a pretty advanced car for 1966; 100+ mph performance when the average family saloon would struggle to reach 70mph, styling by Michelotti who generally designed some of the most iconic offerings from Ferrari & Maserati. In ethos, something like a E-Type light. It was a 'hot hatch' 2 decades before the term was coined. I feel that it's always been a car / classic that hasn't been appreciated as much as it should have been. It's half a Century old and still sex on wheels! That certainly is sex on wheels! I did manage to scratch my GT6 itch in 1987, with a MkII bought from a scrappy for £125, a MkIV Spit shell, a handful of new panels, A mig welder and about a year, I built a GT6 convertible that I absolutely ADORED and drove everywhere for 5 years till the tinworm came back, when I took it to pieces and sold the pieces. A couple of years ago I drove a more or less stock MkIII and couldn't believe how I had once loved something so harsh, noisy, uncomfortable, nose heavy, slow, etc. Now I drive this, which is harsh, noisy, uncomfortable etc (but quicker than my old GT6 and handles better) and I understand myself again - this is what I do! I'm 53.
As a kid, I always wanted a Capri. Probably my mum's fault, she was the petrolhead in the family! She always wanted a Healey 3000, but had a Mk1 Capri 2 litre. It was bright red with a black vinyl roof and matt black bonnet. Real 70s-tastic! She gave it the beans down the lanes as well...

53, the car that still eludes me is a 911, got as close as a 3.2 boxster S but not quite a 911, the other items on the list included Mexico and RS2000 and I was able to scratch those off during the period they were everywhere,
The other car was my Clan, came from reading Triple C , and although Custom Car and Hot Car followed by Street machine and Hot Rod and Custom it was always back to Triple C and Auto Performance.
Lucky enough to now be able to buy and fix most toys that I buy on a whim latest being an Elan +2 but should never of sold my XR4 x 4 2.9 so that's one I'd buy back but the real defo buy back is Yamaha XT500.

47 and a bit more than a half. First of 38 motors was a 78 1300L Mk2 Escort on Weller 8 spokes.Always wanted an orange Fiat 127 Sport at the time, looked at a few but they were all well progressed in the rust stakes even back then. Dad had some nice cars,Mk1 Tina,BMW E12,Opel Rekord Berlina etc but my favourite was my Grandads Mk1 Escort 1300E in purple velvet. Used to ride to school everyday in a MK 10 Jag which i loved too.
Never owned a car newer than 1999 but never really got to own any of my dream cars either, maybe one day...

45 years young...
As a kid I lusted after all the TV cars, the Saint's Jag XJS, Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino, the Duke Boy's Charger but best of all Steed's Broadspeed Jag. I was also obsessed with the mk2 RS2000 after Matchbox released the model one.
First road legal car was a white 1977 mk2 Allegro with a blue vinyl interior. Passed my test and it was gone within a week to be replaced by a royal blue mk2 Escort 1.3 GL - closest I could get to an RS2000.
Still not had an RS2000, think I've missed the boat on that one!

Wading in at 65.5 years and was always interested in Ford Anglias with twin cam Lotus engine , bubble arches and 5.5j steel rims and the Porsche 911 in my younger years. Seemed to have owned lots of interesting stuff but none of the two i really wanted. My neighbour is 66 and into tuning, remapping , high power amps and speakers, engine bling and giving it the beans in his Golf gti so there is no limit. The retro scene as kept me sane and have no intention of rolling over and doing normal old folk stuff

I'm a mere forty-six. I never really went through the 'car poster on the wall' phase, even when mates were mad for Lambos and Daytonas. I always liked the Rover P6, and the Triumph 2500S estate, and I remember buying my first copy of Classic & Sportscar because it had a feature on the Consul Capri. I always promised that I'd buy myself a Suzuki Whizzkid for my first car, a bit cool-looking, quirky, but crucially a small engine so cheap to insure. But I didn't pass my test until I was twenty-three and nearly married, and what did I end up with? A green Fiat 900E camper! (not actual vehicle!)
