Hey Guys I have a bright yellow Skoda, and to give me some joy when driving it and abit of fun, i was going to vinyl it up to look like a NYC taxi, is there any laws that would prevent me doing this? Or result in me getting a tug from the plod? I've looked around online but can't find much on it It would be stickers similar to the ones on this taxi here:

Can't see any problems with this. The only trouble you would get in, is if you pretend to be a taxi and actually pick people up and charge them Also your insurance might have something to say about it.

I've never heard of any problems relating to replicas except emergency services vehicles, you certainly cant go around with a blue light on (don't ask how I know).
I would think anything that isn't standard should be declared to the insurance company if you want to be on the safe side.

I didn't think there was too much wrong with NYC taxi vinyls. I can understand if it's emergency services but thought i'd ask on here and see what came back And of course i have no issue informing the insurance

You must be licensed to pick up from the kerb or from a rank
There is no legal issue with looking like a taxi (or emergency service, so long as you have no blue lights) from another country

Had someone tell me it's illegal to look like a taxi but doubted that was the case

Had someone tell me it's illegal to look like a taxi but doubted that was the case A number of people use ex-London cabs as everyday vehicles (including one of my neighbours) and you can't get something that looks more like a taxi than a taxi!

If you are worried about taxi issues, you need to consider the licensing. A taxi for hire (certainly on the streets up here) must have a meter and in some cases a lit for hire roof beacon. without these you are in the realms of private hires which are not permitted to pick up flagged fares anyway, only pre bookings. As such, with no meter and a lack of lit roof beacon "for hire", you are well within the law on the graphics.

Many years ago a mate had a PUG 405, which got given the nickname Taxi as the rest of us had small hatchbacks. He then added big taxi stickers, short time late he got pulled by the cops and told he had to remove them as having the word taxi written on his car without a Hackney carridge licence is illegal apparently? Not sure if this is true, but its def what the cops told him!

Around my way there is at least 4 that I can think of yanks decalled up as sherif and NYC Police vehicles. Functioning lights and all. The ones I've spoken to have said they have never suffered any problems.

And I very much doubt if a Skoda could be mistaken for an american yellow cab, no matter how accurate the vinyls are!

Not sure if this is true, but its def what the cops told him! The cop could have done your mate on the basis that he was advertising and totting for business illegally as a taxi but would need to prove that was the case but its not actually illegal to have the words TAXI on your car, as for a NYC 'taxi' it is obvious to most that it isn't a real taxi.
