Prove me wrong please!
Bought a donor car for my scirocco this weekend, but it was so nice i figured i'd just use it for a while. But it got me thinking, the car was so cheap (essentially i got a free golf with my 20v) because it's deeply uncool- 5 door, old man green, naff wheels, walnut(plastic) trim inserts... Can it be saved? Can you make an over weight 5 door cool?

Doors are just doors...! The car (generally!) is the same...

Two extra doors doesn't make it uncool. Maybe less desirable than a 2-door for some people, but 4-doors are definitely still cool.

I'd much rather have a 5 door. Who wants to get out when your passengers need to get in the back?

I prefer a more door, they're aesthetically more pleasing, the doors on 3 doors are always way too long.

Ive never understood why 2doors are supposedly better? I always think the unpopularity of 4 doors is left over from the 80s hot hatch days- You used to only be able to get the sporty models in 2 door (Nova, Escorts etc) so naturally people would want the 2 door body when looking for a base car to modify. But nowadays the sporty models come in all body types pretty much (mk3 Golf GTi is a good example), yet the 2-door desirability remains. Unless you're going to be building a race car where weight is crucial, the number of doors just comes down to aesthetics and practicality for most people.

That mk3 is lovely, the rest leave me cold, but then the mk2 golf 5dr is my epitome of uncool. Admittedly the only real performance difference is in rigidity.

I've never had the fascination of a 2 door or preference over a "more door", aye I see "why" but it's ultimately the same car... I've owned a variety of cars (seems a big deal with older hatches) and have never thought to myself "Nah I'm not buying that it has 4 doors instead of 2", I'm boring because I have kids so I just see one as the easier way to deliver them and the other one that delays the delivering lol. I've never had a garage queen though so although I've owned plenty of 2(3) doors from Golfs to 2 door sports cars I've always preferred the practicality of a 4(5) door (although a 3 door doesn't bother me in all honesty). Tbh though I'd always been into saloons so obviously I can appreciate the more of the door'ness whereas I spose hatch back enthuisiasts see the 2 rear doors as ruining it's design?

I kinda prefer a 5 door, when lowered I always think they look longer and lower.
That said I'm not a fan of 5 doors done up as sporty versions that didn't exist, like RSturbo kits on 5 doors etc.

i think the 2 door thing goes WAAAAAAY further back than that! for example, a model A 2 door sedan is worth a shedload more than a 4 door- if anyone even wants the 4 door at all. 4 doors do not say 'racecar'.
then in the forties and fiftes it happened all over again when customs came into vogue. it was all about clean lines, which 2 doors had over the 4 doors. check the price of a 2 door '50 mercury versus a moredoor one. a 2door pontiac steamliner or chevy fleetline versus one more endowed in the door department. even a shoebox will have a good price difference.
this than carries on through the muscle car years, but i rapidly loose interest there. it comes out the other side into hot hatches and the like though. simple fact is 2dr variants have laoways been cooler and more desirable than the 4 dr equivelent ever since the motor car was invented, for various reasons.

You've just got me thinking how few 5-doors I've owned, because I've rarely needed that practicality and because of the perceived sportiness of a 3-door. Mondeo? Vectra? A few cools ones of those around, but really all 5-door motors. If you're talking Golfs, yeah, I like to see somebody make a cool motor from what might be expected to be a less inspiring starting-point. Show us what you can do

Yep there is no such thing as a cool 5 door hatch. None. Except this.

I'd say that's a pretty cool 5 door. You didn't say it had to be a golf.... Edit - Damn someone got there first

Unless its a pillerless coupe in which case it just goes better with the tidy look, less fuss etc.. Which itself is still trumped by a pillarless 4-door. 2 doors are sporty. 4 doors are for saloons. But 5 doors are for shopping.

Stop being so obvious. I'm thinking Renault 30, Lancia Beta. Lots of cool late 70s 5 door hatches. Only problem is they have all disintegrated...
