THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.
It could stand to be a bit lower on the front maybe. But I do like the period 'sit up and beg' look. To get the more scene look it would need to run lower profile tyres. I do quite like how OEM it looks though.
It's off to the first car show of the year on Sunday too.

Taurus, Grifterkid and Tuxman - Thank you. I am really pleased with how it looks too. Next on the agenda is the interior and to try and find a nice stainless exhaust system. I'm having trouble finding one though.

Tuxman - Thank you for that and it's definitely something to consider, however from the next update I may have cracked the problem and been bloody lucky by doing it. Jxke - Aww man, brilliant photo! Thank you very much. Massive shame I didn't get to meet you though. I had a feeling you may have gone as it's local to us. Did you take the 5? So an update, As already pointed out I went to Old Warden with the Cavalier today. A really good turnout and mixture of classic cars, some absolute real retrorides too. A beautiful Fiat 125 that was parked near me that had been imported from Malta and some rare Renault 16s and a 10. Great day. Anyway, I'm walking through the stalls and I come across this one stall that has a pile of odd stainless steel exhausts, all mixed up pieces. I see a rear silencer and jokingly say "that looks like the Cavalier box". The seller then states any stainless exhaust piece is £15. Which is a bargain as you'll know! Scrap alone there's profit in that. Anyway so I pick up this stainless rear box and written on it in black marker pen is VL229. The mind starts to think, could VL be Vauxhall? So I ask the guy and he says "don't have a clue mate, just a job lot of clearance" So I decide to go over to the Cavalier and look at my rear box. As I pear underneath I see a sticker on the silencer saying guess what? Yup, VL229!!! What are the chances? So I rush back and put the silencer to one side. But I wasn't ready to give up there. Now I've started wondering. So I google and after eventually finding some coverage I find this picture online. Now I know it's an Opel Ascona but that is the same car floor pan and engine. There is VL229 shown as the rear box. So I find a piece that looks a little like the middle section from sight and sure enough written on it in black marker pen is VL228. This is great news as my middle section has a slight hole and is blowing. To top it off I then spy a really long piece that looks similar to VL239. I pick it up but it's got no black marker pen on it! curse word! However I then notice that it does in fact match up to the middle section flawlessly. I then compare it with the picture I have of the exhaust from the MOT and it's pretty much there. So for the sake of £45 I pay for the Exhaust system, a fully stainless steel exhaust system that I'm hoping will all bolt up nicely on to the car. The only modifications I'll be making are a very heavy machine polish and possibly cut off the tail pipe and TIG weld on a new end. Not decided what yet but have a few ideas. Here is my car show Bobby Dazzler bargain, full stainless steel exhaust system £45! As usual all comments welcome and greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Yeah I went up there in the 5, almost ripped my exhaust off on the speedbumps coming in. I parked near a green Rover P6, it was immaculate - lots of cool stuff there, had a good look at your Cav

Tuxman - Tell me about it! When I found the same part number on the car I was shocked, to find a full system is crazy!!!
Jxke - Aww man!!! I didn't see it at all. The speed bumps are quite viscious there, I followed a Robin Reliant over them and I thought it was going to take off!

What an absolutely lovely Cavalier this is. 'Looks to be in stunning condition, is it original or has it been restored? Is it a 1.6 or 1.9? That exhaust is a billy bonus at that money. However, be aware it may make quite a different sound from the mild steel system. 'Gotta say the banded wheels have turned out fantastic. What size are the tyres on the GL models, 165/80 or 185/70? I think the later are pretty much ideal with the 13" wheels. Go lower profile and you'll end up with an even bigger arch/tyre gap. Then you'll want to lower it more to accommodate them, slippery slope an all that!! I've had quite a few Manta's in the past (obviously the same chassis/floorpan) and personally I wouldn't recommend lowering it much more than you already have. A decent quality set of dampers will be a worthwhile investment though. As a general rule, a 40mm drop on these retains enough compliance and suspension travel but with all the improvements in handling and roadholding. As for your interior door handle surrounds, get in touch with the Opel Manta owners club. I'm pretty sure that all pre '86 Manta's use the same "chrome" surround, there's always lot's being broken. Good luck with your superb Cavalier, keep us posted.

Taurus - I couldn't believe it when I found it. From a pile of random exhaust sections that the seller had bought from a car part shop liquidation.
Envoycdx - Thanks mate, appreciate your comments.
Mk2polobloke - Thanks buddy, I'm pretty confident it's had a cosmetic restoration sometime in the last few years. There are a few little signs here and there. I also got sent some old photographs from a previous owner. Looks a bit rough round the edges in those pics. So that also leads me to believe it has had some work.
The car is actually a 2.0 as in 1978 they improved the 1.9, it's engine code 20S and produces are nice 100bhp. It drives very well and smooth and pulls extremely well keeping up with modern traffic.
The exhaust I'm hoping won't be loud and that it's more a stainless steel replacement rather than performance system. I nice low rumble wouldn't go amiss though.
The GL runs 185/70 R13, I've decided that I'm happy with the look of the car so it will be staying exactly as is. It does handle very well indeed and can again compete well with some later cars on the B roads. It's got ARBs fitted front and rear so it drives well. The front shock absorbers are new, think they are Monroes.
I'll have a look for the door surrounds on that forum.
Thanks for your comments mate, really appreciated.

That's a very early 2.0 litre model then and much better for it. Back in the mid 80's my old boss had a metallic blue 1.9 GL auto and it had all the get up and go of an ice cream van! Personally I think the CIH engine is a bit of a boat anchor, but at least in 20S/20E form they have a reasonable power/economy ratio.
Just re-read your post, Monroe Gasmatics work really well on these.

Cheeky little update on this. I went to a street classic car show today in the old girl. Was a really good turnout and a good mixture of vehicles. I met some great people there. Here she is parked up in all her glory, I still haven't had chance to fit my newly purchased exhaust. If truth be told I'm worried that the threads will snap in the manifold when I try to remove the down pipe!! Thanks for looking.

I still haven't had chance to fit my newly purchased exhaust. If truth be told I'm worried that the threads will snap in the manifold when I try to remove the down pipe!! Thanks for looking. My tips others may have different ones Wire brush the threads below the nuts to clear of any excess rust Soak the stud/nuts in penetrating oil for several days prior to trying (including from the top side of the manifold - it's a result when the stud and nut come out together) Get the exhaust good and hot - yes you will burn a bit of arm hand but you stand the best chance Have new studs at the ready and use them even if you get away without snapping one - cos the next time they will snap
