Hey all, I was just reading the truckdoctor's P5B thread, and I noticed something about the front sidelights- I'd noticed years ago on the P6B that the front sidelights have a little clear pip of plastic that sits up above the light surround... the P5B does too but it's red. Does it light up? Is it just there for show? Is it something related further back in motoring history that I'm unaware of? ...and why red, on the front? --Phil

Okay. That does make sense- I'm guessing it's just visible over the top of the wing from the driver's seat?

yep, you can see them when you are driving, quite cool, obviously informs you when your lights are on, don't quite understand the logic of that, unless they were put there to inform you if your bulbs are blown

I quite like the petrol cap hanger on my Volvo.

My Porker has an under bonnet light which is quite thoughtful....

The Delica has an extra set of lights by the side repeaters. When the sidelights/dipped beam is on, each time you indicate the extra light will come on and illuminate the road to the side on which you are indicating/turning. It's pretty effective too....really lights up the road to the side as you indicate.

if you can see those little red fellas on the Rover from the driver's seat, are they not to help you know where the corners are when manouvering? Like those light sabres you used to see on J import cars from the early '00s? you see them on those Scanias that look like melted American trucks too:

A friend had a Soarer that used to switch on the fog lamp on the side you were indicating to illuminate the road for turning.

Badges that aren't just badges make me smile. ^^ the Seat Leon's boot badge is also the boot handle; ditto the old New Beetle which has a pivoting badge with a lock behind it. And the Fords whose grill badges swing around to reveal bonnet opening locks. **edit**Oh yes, and the grill badge on my old mkII Cortina operated the bonnet release too.

Neighbour bought a brand new (59 reg) Seat Ibiza and I said front fog light was faulty as it kept flickering on when they were manouvering so they went back to the dealers. Turns out they have the same sort of system as the Soarer Paul H

I always just slot it in under the pump's handle for 'auto-filling' though. Perfect size on the Volvo caps!

My lucida had similar, the sidelight was a stop and tail bulb, 5W for side light then 21W when you indicated, total curse word anywhere with street lights but great in the country.

Granada Mk2 plastic petrol flap has the similar, i've fitted the same one to every cortina (Mk3/4/5) i've owned for the last 20 odd years, bolt on mod, noone notices but I like it ;D

How about the number plate on the Amazon estate that is on a flap which drops down when the tailgate is down so you can still see the plate. Enables you to carry long items.

I was just about to say that ;D - the light is part of the rotating section, so all completely road legal. A friend writes for a modern car mag, and when he saw that, he commented that modern estates should have this! Another nice feature on the estates is the rear overriders - flat topped, with a rubber tread, for use as steps to load a roof rack

these are all excellent ideas from the days when cars had designers that went to the pub for lunch and not keyboard monkeys like today that think a different headlamp and taillamp setup makes yet another modern stand out

Not much on new cars makes me smile and say that's really natty, last thing was seeing the new door protectors on the new focus they hid in the door shut then when you open the door it pop's out and wraps around the door edge protecting the door, then just before the door closed it pops back behind the door, cool l thought until a saw the complected mechanism that controls it and come to the conclusion it was a waste of resources!
